OPENING PRAYER

God of grace, We open our hearts,

minds and soul to worship You.
Thank You that today we dwell in
Your kingdom and live in Your
presence. Thank You that as we
gather together we join with all Your
children to glorify Your Holy name.
Come be with us, inspire us and
lead us in our time together. We
ask all this in the beautiful name of
Jesus. Amen.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the Lord, the _______ of
life
_____, who proceeds from
Father
the ________ and the
Son who with the Father
_____,
adored
and the Son is ________
glorified
and ________, who has
spoken through the
prophets.
In the Nicene Creed we proclaim our firm
Catholic belief in the Holy Spirit, who
together with the Father and the Son is the
living God, the Blessed Trinity.

Now, just as the third part of the Creed

treats of the Holy Spirit and His activities, so
too does this final, third part of the
Catechism.

For, as the “Giver of Life”, the Holy

Spirit gives life and empowers the
Church, its sacramental life, and
resurrection to life everlasting.

This lesson on the Holy Spirit also unites on Moral Life with this present on Worship. For it is only through “the love of
God… poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given us” (Rom 5:5) that we can both act morally and worship
authentically as true disciples of Christ. Moreover it is always within a Christian community, the local Church, that we follow Christ in
our moral lives and worship. For when the Holy Spirit “brings those who believe in Christ to a new life… He gathers them into one
People of God”.

It is the Holy Spirit who continues and brings the work
of Christ to perfection.

Christ sends the Church to continue His mission, it is

true, but unless the Holy Spirit precedes,
accompanies and fructifies, the work of the Church will
amount to nothing.

The Holy Spirit is the principal

agent of evangelization. It was by
the power of the Holy Spirit that
the Incarnation was
accomplished.
How can the
Church be the
temple of the Holy
Spirit?
CHURCH AS TEMPLE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

What the soul is to human body, the

Holy Spirit is the Body of Christ, which
is the Church.

To this Spirit of Christ, as an invisible

principle, is to be ascribed the fact that
all the parts of the body are joined one
with the other and with their exalted
head;

1. for the whole Spirit of Christ is in

the head,
2. the whole Spirit is in the body,
3. the whole Spirit is in each of the
members.
CHURCH AS TEMPLE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

The Holy Spirit is the principle of every vital and truly saving action in each
part of the Body. He works in many ways to build up the whole Body in
charity:

•by God’s Word “which is able to build you up”;

•by Baptism, through which he forms Christ’s Body;
•by the sacraments, which give growth and healing to Christ’s members;
•by “the grace of the apostles, which holds first place among his gifts”;
•by the virtues, which make us act according to what is good; finally,
•by the many special graces (called “charisms”;),
•by which he makes the faithful “fit and ready to undertake various tasks
and offices for the renewal and building up of the Church.”
CHARISMS
Whether extraordinary or simple and humble,
charisms are graces of the Holy Spirit which
directly or indirectly benefit the Church,
ordered as they are to her building up, to the
good of men, and to the needs of the world.
Charisms are to be accepted with gratitude by the person who
receives them and by all members of the Church as well.

They are a wonderfully rich grace for the apostolic vitality and for
the holiness of the entire Body of Christ, provided they really are
genuine gifts of the Holy Spirit and are used in full conformity with
authentic promptings of this same Spirit, that is, in keeping with
charity, the true measure of all charisms.
There are two kinds of gifts that God, through the
Holy Spirit, gives us. They are the:

1. Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit

2. Charismatic Gifts

The Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit helps us to

use our heart, mind, and body to love and serve
God and other people as well. They are listed in
the Book of the Prophet Isaiah 11:2-3.

The nine charismatic gifts considered extraordinary

in character include: faith, expression of
knowledge and wisdom, miracles, the gift of
tongues and their interpretation, prophecy,
discernment of spirits and healing.
SEVEN GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

1. WISDOM 4. COUNSEL
is both the knowledge of and judgment about allows a man to be directed by God in matters
“divine things” and the ability to judge and direct necessary for his salvation
human affairs according to divine truth

2. UNDERSTANDING 5. FORTITUDE
denotes a firmness of mind in doing good and in avoiding evil,
is penetrating insight into the very heart of things,
particularly when it is difficult or dangerous to do so, and the
especially those higher truths that are necessary for
confidence to overcome all obstacles, even deadly ones, by
our eternal salvation
virtue of the assurance of everlasting life

6. FEAR OF THE
3. KNOWLEDGE LORD
is the ability to judge correctly about matters of faith and is, in this context, “filial” or chaste fear whereby we revere God
right action, so as to never wander from the straight path of and avoid separating ourselves from him—as opposed to “servile”
justice
7. PIETY fear, whereby we fear punishment

is, principally, revering God with filial affection, paying worship and duty to
God, paying due duty to all men on account of their relationship to God, and
honoring the saints and not contradicting Scripture.
The three roles of the Holy Spirit:

1. To give life to us by adopting us

as children of God.

2. To unite us by inspiring us to be
more caring to others in the
community.

3. To move us to love as Jesus

did as we strive to live a truly
Christian life.
As we strive to follow Jesus more closely
through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we
hope to bear good fruits in our lives. These
fruits show the effects of the presence of the
Holy Spirit dwelling in us. St. Paul listed
nine fruits of the Holy Spirit in his letter to
the Galatians 5:22-23.
As Christians, we are called to seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit in order to make
wise decisions and act on them. This is called discernment. The following are some of
the guidelines whenever we discern what is the right and good thing to do:

1. Pray for the gifts of the Holy Spirit you need.

2. As you reflect, go back to Jesus and think of what He would do if he is in your
situation.
3. Think about the consequences whether they will do more good or harm to
yourself, and/or to other people.
4. Seek the advice of a trusted adult. It can be your parents, a relative, your
teacher, or a priest.
5. Consider the possible outcome of your decision and see if it will show the
fruits of the Holy Spirit.
6. Be open and humble enough to obey what the Holy Spirit leads you to do
