GENERAL BIOLOGY 1 Q1W1-8: WHAT I CAN DO

WEEK 1:

“How has the invention of microscope influenced the cell theory and the science of cell biology as a
whole?”

Cell is the basis of life. It is fundamental, yet it is also the most important thing in biology. Microscope
is an apparatus use to see what the naked eye cant, in short, very tiny things. Cell, at the same time, is not
seen the normal vision of the eyes.
The microscope is being utilized in almost all experiments and studies. It is also used in medical
laboratories, and even in non-biological fields. But the first purpose of the microscope was for the discovery
of cells. The invention of the microscope influenced the cell theory in a way that, with it, the cell theory
started. It helped enhanced and improve the information regarding the cell itself. It made scientists see, and
explain the cell, its structures, and many more about it. Robert Hooke, looked at a sliver of cork through a
microscope lens and noticed some "pores" or "cells" in it. He was the first person to use the word "cell" to
identify microscopic structures when he was describing cork. From His findings through the microscope,
Anton Van Leeuwenhoek, then came, an perfected the microscope. He discovered protozoa, a single-celled
organisms and called them "animalcules". He was the first to observe individual cells found in blood, semen,
feces, pepper and pond water but he recognized them as living units and not cells. This was the beginning of
the cell theory. Since the microscope played a great role in the cell theory, the science of cell biology has
now a great ground or foundation. With all the findings of scientists that has been contributed to the cell
theory, the science of cell biology, then is improved. It can be considered that the science of cell biology is
dependent on the cell theory.
Cell is not visible in the naked eye, it is also the basis of all life. It can be seen on a microscope. The
invention of the microscope made the basis of life known, its structures, explanations, and connections in
biology, thus, the cell theory and the science of cell biology. It’s much easier now to find and study about
these cells, through the help of the cell theory and the science of cell biology, and especially, the
microscope.

“How do cell’s overall function and processes affect the organisms as a whole?”

Cells as we all know it is the basis of living organisms. It carries out many functions needed to sustain
life.
The human body and other living organism’s body have many functions. There are a number of systems
in the body in which the organs belong to. The circulatory system, it is consist of the heart, the veins, and
blood. The heart pumps blood all throughout the body, and the veins serve as the pathway. The heart is an
organ. There are organs in every system, and every one of these is made up of tissues. These tissues are
classified into four types. Each of them has its own function too. Every tissue is made up of cells. To cut it
short, the cells provide structure for the body. For the body to become physically well, or in order to sustain
or maintain the good condition or heal the organs, the cell then, will do its part. They grow and divide,
thereby, producing more like them. To do this, they are required, or they take in nutrients which is used to
provide energy for the work that they do and to make the materials that it needs or the organism needs.
The cell’s overall function and processes affect the organisms as a whole, in a way that it provides what
the body needs. It helps the body parts to function, for the whole being. They work for everything or in
everything that the body do

WEEK 2:
Write one paragraph essay about the importance of tissues to living organisms.

Living needs this and that. The body should be like this and that. The plants, animal and human body
works 24/7. In order to do so, there are tissues to help the body function. In plant tissues, there is the
meristematic, which is responsible in the plant’s growth, and the permanent, this helps providing support,
protection, as well as the photosynthesis. While in the animal tissue, present in animal and human bodies,
there 4 types of it. The epithelial, on skin and linings on mouth and nose, responsible for protection,
secretion, and absorption. The second is the muscle, there is smooth, skeletal, deals with movement. The
third is the nervous, spinal cord and brain. Last is the connective, for structure and support. All these tissues
do their own work for the parts and organs to fully carry out their function every second of every day.
Without tissues, living organisms are nada. That is how important tissues are in living organisms in
everyday life.

WEEK 3:
“Reflect on your everyday lives on why do cells need to be modified?”

Humans are considered as complex organisms. They need to more energy, or more capability of
carrying out the body’s work, which is also complex.
Cells are the building blocks of the body. They are very tiny that they can’t be seen with the naked eye.
But these little things make up the tissue, and the tissues, make up the organs. Each of the organ has its own
function. Every second of my day, I answer modules starting at a very early time in the morning, and end up
doing it until late at night. Reading, analysing, typing on the keyboard, sitting for long periods of time.
These activities may seem light, but the cells do heavy. In reading and analysing, the nerve cells work,
without it being specialized it can’t carry out its work. It has special parts which are the dendrites and axon,
they are responsible in the information. And in simply, the heart, which pumps blood all throughout the
body, which makes me, us alive, has these cells that are specialized in order to do its function. Its cells are
designed to withstand fatigue, and for it to not stop. The human body, is complex one. The cells, then, of the
body, needs to be specialized. For the body to function, for the body to carry out its works, simple to heavy.
The cells in my body, the human body, needs to be specialized. When cells are aren’t specialized, the
tissues, and the organs, are, well, won’t function. They should and are needed to be specialized for me to do
my modules, do my daily routine, and endure the heaviness of every activity.

“How do the process of cell cycle affect the development of an organism?”

Cells are the building blocks of an organism. They make up the whole. The cells undergo a cycle, cycle
after every cycle.
The cell cycle is known for the replication and reproduction of cells. But we have to be knowledgeable
that, that is not the only function of the cell cycle. In addition to its role as coordinator of DNA
replication and mitosis, it is also a coordinator of developmental processes, and is a target of developmental
signaling pathways. When cells are reproduced, the number of cells then increases, and when it increases, of
course the tissues and organs also become better, or maintains its good.
The cell cycle indeed helps in the development of an organism. Being that cells are the building blocks
or they make up the whole of the organism.

WEEK 4:
What I Can Do
“What is the role of mitosis in understanding cancer and its treatment?”

When we say cancer, it is from or associated to cancer cells. Cells undergo cell division, which results to its
own reproduction. The cell division has 2 phases, the interphase and the mitosis. The mitosis is responsible
for the division and reproduction. When they say a person has a cancer, it means that the cancer cells in
his/her body is reproducing non-stop, or we may say awake. With the help of mitosis, or in knowing mitosis,
understanding cancer and its treatment would become easier and faster. It will make people who are trying
to understand cancer, more knowledgeable about the process or the way and how fast the cancer cells
develop and reproduce, hence, the treatment will be easier to make or to discover.

What I Can Do
Reflect and discuss the importance of having mature egg cells in the development of healthy zygote and
prevention of mutation.
In the fertilization of a zygote, it needs a sperm and a mature egg cell. Mature egg cells are important
in the development of a healthy zygote and prevention of mutations, for we all know that, sex cells like the
sperm cell and the egg cell undergo meiosis. When the egg cell isn’t mature, or full bloom, we may expect
that the zygote won’t be healthy, there will be a lot of problems during the pregnancy, or the baby. Meiosis
is a process like mitosis, but it is doubled, or the process is doubled. When we say not fully mature egg cell,
maybe we can say that, the egg cell only underwent not a full cycle of meiosis, and that would be mitosis. In
mitosis, cells are being replicated, fully, all the dna and such, they are reproduced alike to the mother or
original cell, therefore would result to mutation.

(BROCHURE)

WEEK 6:
What I Can Do: Reflective Essay

Directions: Reflect and write your ideas on any of the following questions:
1. Why are transport mechanisms important?
2. What would happen to the cell and to the body as a whole if the processes of passive and active transport
will fail?

Cells make up the body. They are the building blocks of life. And they need to maintain homeostasis, in
order to live.

Transport mechanisms are important, for, they are responsible for the movement of substances such as
molecules, both small and large, across the cell membrane. This maintains or is responsible for the
equilibrium of the cell. There are two types of this transport mechanism, the passive and active. In the
passive, it does not require energy to move the molecules. One example of a passive transport is Osmosis, in
osmosis, there are three types of it. Oce is, hypertonic, this is when the surrounding of the cell is as a greater
concentration of solutes on the outside of a cell when compared with the inside of a cell. Its response would
make the cell shrivel and loses up its water. In hypotonic, its just opposite of it, and of course we have the
balanced, the isotonic. One example of an active transport is Endocytosis, moves particles, such as large
molecules, parts of cells, and even whole cells, into a cell. There are different variations of endocytosis, but
all share a common characteristic: The plasma membrane of the cell invaginates, forming a pocket around
the target particle. The pocket pinches off, resulting in the particle being contained in a newly created
vacuole that is formed from the plasma membrane. All of these aim to maintain the homeostasis in the cell,
and in the body, in general. It absorbs if it can take more, it releases if its too much, it balances the
molecules in the cell, the water, proteins, and etc.

If the processes of passive and active transport fails, the homeostasis in the cells, and in the whole body
will not be attained. If there is no balance in the body, the organ systems function less efficiently or even
malfunction. Then will come diseases, or even worse, theses diseases will become death.

Transport mechanisms are important, it plays a great role in the cells, and in the whole body. It is
responsible for one of the most important thing in the body, homeostasis. Without it, the cells, and organ
systems will fail to function properly, and gives death as a result.

WEEK 7-8

What I Can Do: Reflective Esssay

Make a self-reflection about understanding one’s role in promoting community health awareness.

Health nowadays, is seen as the most important thing. Especially that, there has been and until now, a
pandemic. A deadly virus, that is being passed from one person to another. Everyone is required to take
extra precautions and health measures.

Community health is a big factor of health alone in individuals. There are a lot of things that need to be
done, for this health to protect and maintain. It is understandable that each one of us, should, cooperate at
times like this, and even in the future. When one is affected in the community, there is a big possibility, that
everyone, will also be affected.

It is an individuals role, young to old, to cooperate, to help maintain the good health of the community.
This means, that we also are responsible and should be obligated to promote the community health
awareness. The more that people promote health awareness, the more people will become knowledgeable
about these health issues. And having to know more, means, having to get more cooperation, especially in
times like pandemic, like, right now.

Each one of us, has this role. Just like in biology, specifically in enzymes and reactions, every reactor,
reacts. These reactors are like poeple, they interact with one another, affecting, influences one another.
There are such environmental factors that affect the enzyme activity. In the community, there are also
factors that affect their activities, especially in this promotion of health awareness.

To cut it short, everyone is affected by everyone, and everything. That is why we all are one, help one
another.
