from ­personal exchange – SDSS 2022 and the special
session of ECCS-TC8 in Aveiro

The International Colloquium on Stability and Ductility of
Steel Structures (SDSS 2022) was held in the beautiful
Portuguese city of Aveiro from September 14 – 16, 2022.
The organisers, led by Prof. Paulo Vila Real and Prof. Ass.
Nuno Lopes, welcomed about 160 participants to the cam-
pus of the Universitário de Santiago. After the long inter-
ruption caused by the global pandemic, during which ex-
changes were limited to online meetings and conferences,
the face-to-face in-person reunion ensured a lively profes-
sional and personal exchange among the participants. The
conference, which was excellently organised right down to
the details of the social programme, will be reported in
detail in the Spring 2023 issue of Steel Construction.
The series of international colloquia has its origins in
Paris in 1972 and started as the ‘International Colloquium
on Column Strength’. Professor Hermann Beer and Dr. G.
Schulz of the Graz University of Technology had just de-
veloped the first version of the European Buckling Curves.
With the support of the International Association for
Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE), the European
Convention for Constructional Steelwork (ECCS), the
­Column Research Committee of Japan and the Column
Research Council of the U.S., the colloquium was organ-
ised to provide a forum for international scientific ex-
change on the buckling strength of columns. Later, the
scope of the colloquium was extended by the variety of
stability phenomena in steel construction and plastic de-
sign. The past six conferences were held in Budapest
(2002), Lisbon (2006), Rio de Janeiro (2010), Timisoara
(2016), Prague (2019), and finally in Aveiro last September.
The next conference will be held at the Universitat Politèc-
nica de Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain in 2025, under the
chairpersonship of Prof. Enrique Mirambell and Prof.
­Esther Real.
Following the great success of the previous confer-
ences in Timisoara and Prague, the ECCS Technical Com-
mittee 8 – Structural Stability (TC8) organised a Special
Session with a total of 13 presentations. In the opening
address, the Chair of TC8, Prof. Bert Snijder, reported on
the objectives and activities of the ECCS and its TC8 com-
mittee. The ECCS is the umbrella organisation of the Eu-
ropean Steel Construction Associations. It promotes steel
construction, participates in the development of standards,
supports research and development, and provides informa-
tion on steel construction topics through publications,
conferences and educational events. TC8 is one of the 11
active technical committees of the Technical Management
Board (TMB) of the ECCS. It is the leading European tech-
nical committee in the broad field of stability of steel struc-
tures. Within TC8, new design rules and recommendations
are developed and discussed to fill the gaps present in the
European codes. A more detailed review of the structure
and activities of the ECCS and TC8 is included as a report
in this issue of Steel Construction.
The technical presentations of the TC8 Special Ses-
sion covered a wide range of topics in the field of the sta-
bility of steel structures. Among others, Alain Bureau, head
of the steel construction division at CTICM and leader of
the project team of the 2nd generation of EN1993-1-1,
gave an overview of the future European rules for the sta-
bility design of structural steel members. In addition, there
were contributions on imperfection assumptions used for
GNIA, residual stresses and buckling resistances of HSS
welded sections, and angle sections with typical joint con-
ditions. Furthermore, presentations were given on the lat-
eral torsional buckling capacity and consideration of bear-
ing conditions and bedding in engineering practice, as well
as on the stability of stainless-steel members, Z-shaped
steel piles and beams with corrugated webs.
In preparation for the present issue of Steel Construc-
tion, a TC8 working group was asked to make a selection
of submitted papers, which were then adapted to the for-
mat of this journal by the authors and supplemented in
terms of content. We hope you enjoy reading these inter-
esting and informative contributions.
