Multimedia exists to help

reinforce our key points.
Audio

Audio is a helping tool that has

multifunctional purposes.
▪ Audio gives the chance these people to
learn without the ability to see
anything
▪ Music integration in educational
videos boost learning
Video

Why use videos as a medium of instruction?

▪ To replace traditional lecture-style direct
instruction, freeing us up to work directly
with individual students;
▪ To give directions for projects and other
complex tasks; and
▪ To provide remediation on skills that
students might need to practice.

5-Step Guide to Making Your Own

Instructional Videos
IE 105

STEP 1:
CHUNK
INSTRUCTION
Multiple short videos are better than
one long video.
IE 105

STEP 2:
BUILD
VIDEO-READY
SLIDES
the best instructional videos are highly
focused, use visual cues to highlight key
information, and minimize the use of
on-screen text.
Common Instructional
Video Formats

▪ Microvideo
▪ Tutorial Video
▪ Training Video
▪ Screencast
▪ Presentation & Lecture Capture
Microvideos

Microvideos are short instructional

videos that focus on teaching a single,
narrow topic. They’re usually less than a
minute long and appeal to today’s media
consumers, who have notoriously short
attention spans.
Tutorial Video

A tutorial video is the go-to instructional

method for teaching a process or walking
through the steps needed to complete a task.
Usually between 2-10 minutes long these videos
leverage multiple instructional methods, such as
direct instruction, follow-along type guidance
and even quizzing and interactive elements.
Training Videos

Training videos are designed to improve

employees’ workplace skills.
Unlike tutorials, training videos often use
footage of real people to help bolster the
connection between the trainer and
trainee.
Screencast

A video composed primarily of screen

recordings designed to teach someone to
perform a task or share knowledge.
Screencasts tend to be quick, informal,
and are usually intended for a smaller
audience than tutorial videos.
Presentation and Lecture
Capture

A recording of a lecture or presentation to make

it available for an audience to consume or
review after the fact. This might be as simple as
recording just the audio for a presentation, or
as advanced as recording PowerPoint point
slides, a webcam and a separate microphone all
at once.

STEP 3:
RECORD
There are many tools you can use to
create a strong instructional video.
Recording Device

What should you consider in buying microphones?

● Noise-Cancelling
● Great Price (Affordability)
● Adjustable Headband
● Lightweight and Ergonomic
● Compatible with Mac and PC

▪ Snagit
▪ Screencastify (a Chrome extension)
▪ iMovie
▪ Adobe Premiere Pro (higher learning curve)
▪ Explain Everything

STEP 4:
ENHANCE
ENGAGEMENT
Simply sitting and watching videos can lead
students to lose focus—the best instructional
videos keep them actively engaged.
IE 105

STEP 5: BE
YOURSELF
The most effective blended
instruction isn’t pretty—it’s personal.
INTRO and OUTRO

Introduction and conclusion are key

elements of any type of content, and
video is no exception. Intros and outros
build a strong base at the beginning and
a well-thought statement at the end.

Learning to create a high-quality instructional video

doesn’t happen overnight—it requires continual trial,
error, and innovation. We’ve been recording videos for
years, and we still often struggle to be compelling and
concise. Yet we keep trying, because we believe that
teacher-driven blended instruction is what’s best for our
students. So start planning, grab some recording
software, be yourself, and have fun!
