Introduction.
Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art, combat spot system that focuses on grappling an d
especially ground fighting.

Brazilian jiu-jitsu was formed from kodokan judo ground fighting (ne waza)
fundamentals.

History
Mitsuyo maeda was one of five of the kodokan’s top groundwork experts thet judo’s
founder jano jigoro sent overseas to demonstrate and spread his art to the world.

Maeda left japan in 1904 and visited a number od countries giving ¨judo¨
demonstrations and accepting challendes from wrestlers, boxers, savate fighters and
various other martial artists before eventualy arriving in brazil.

In 1914, maeda was given the opportunity to travel to brazil as part of a large japanese
immigration colony, in brazil, in the northern state of para, he befriended gastao gracie,
an influential businessman, who helped maeda get established.
To show his gratitude, maeda offered to teach traditional japanese jiu-jitsu to gastao’s
oldest son, carlos gracie.

Carlos learned for a few years and eventually passed his knowledge to his brothers.

Grand master
Helio gracie, the youngest son of gastao and cesalina gracie´s eigh children, was always a
very physically frail child.
At age fourteen, he moved in with his older brothers who lived and taught jiu-jitsu in a
house in botafogo,a borough of rio de janeiro.

Following doctor´s recommendations, helio would spend the nex few years limited to
only watching his brothers teach.
One day, when helio was 16 years ild, a student showed up for class when carlos was
nota round. Helio, who had memorized all the techniques from watching his brothers
teach, offered to start the class, and helio became an instructor.

Eager to make the techniques work for him, he began modifying them to accommodate
His weak body. Emphasizing the use of leverage and timing over strengh and speed,
helio modified virtually all of the techniques and, through trial and error, created
gracie/brazilian jiu-jitsu.
Although the gracie family is typically synonymous with BJJ, another prominent lineage
started from maeda via another brazilian disciple, luiz franAa. Thid linrsgr hsd been
represented particularly by Oswaldo Fadda.

Fadda and his studebts were famous for influential ise of footlocks and the lineage still
survives through fadda´s link with today´s teams such as Nova Uniao and grappling fight
team.

Greeting
Traditional greeting:
1. Greet in stading or bow(ritsu rei)
2. Greet in siting (Zarei).

OSS or OSU:

OSU or OSS include:

- As a greeting: Many dojos use OSS as a form of greeting. In fact, some dojos make it a
standard prectice for students to say ¨Osu¨ while bowing when they enter the dojo. This
is done again upon leaving.
- - Response to a question or instruction: the term is often used in place of ¨I
understand¨, ¨understood¨or ¨yes¨.
- As a show of respect: whe at tournaments, ¨osu!¨is said while bowing before as well as
after a fight.
- As a compliment: A figghter may use the term to acknowledge the skill an opponent
shows during the execution of a technique.
- Routine during techniques: ¨Osu!¨is used in many dojos during the execution of basic
techniques. The term is said as Each technique is performed.
- A commitment to continue.
A student may also use the term to assure a master that he or she will continue pushing
despite seeming tired, weak or in pain. This translation comes from the term ¨Osu no
seishin¨ (the spirit of Osu) which speaks to the strength of carácter that is born out of
training hard.
This underrstanding comes from the concept that ¨Osu!¨is a condensation of the Kanji
symbols used to write ¨Oshi Shinobu¨.

¨Osu!¨is derived from the ¨Os¨of the First Word and the ¨u¨t the end of the second
Word. In this case the meaning of ¨OSS¨or ¨OSU¨is essentially to preserve even under
extreme duress.
