LABORATORY ACTIVITY #6. The Nature of Molecules and Water Chemistry

NAME: Sophia Angela R. Añoza COURSE/YEAR & SECTION: BSP2B SCORE:
INSTRUCTOR: Sir DK German DATE: 11/28/2022

OBJECTIVE/S
At the end of the activity, the students should be able to:
⮚ Relate the nature and structure of molecules.
⮚ Perform simple activities of water chemistry.
⮚ Identify the chemical bonding of the given elements.
Part I. Solve for the electronegativity difference of the following compounds and identify
the type of chemical bonding whether it is IONIC BOND, POLAR COVALENT BOND or
NONPOLAR COVALENT BOND. Use the table below.
TYPES OF CHEMICAL ELECTRONEGATIVITY

Non-Polar Covalent Bond 0
Polar Covalent Bond 0.1 to 1.9
Ionic Bond Greater than 2

PART 2. SIMULATION ACTIVITY

DIRECTION. Choose one Water Chemistry activity below. Create a simulation video
(maximum of 5 minutes) or a voice over presentation while doing your activity. Also,
include your answer in the following questions together with the results and discussion.
A. Walking Water Experiment
Materials
● Odd number of clear glasses or cups (at least three)
● Water
● Food coloring
● Spoon
● Half-sheet paper towels (at least three)
Preparation
● Line up all your glasses in a row.
● Starting with a glass on one end, fill every other glass with water.
● Put a few drops of food coloring in each water-filled glass. You can
choose what colors to use, but don’t use the same color twice in a row.
● Use the spoon to mix the food coloring in each glass. Use a paper towel to wipe off the spoon in
between glasses, so you don’t transfer the colors.
Procedure
● Fold each half-sheet paper towel (except the one you used to clean the spoon) into a narrow strip
about one inch wide.
● Fold each paper towel in half lengthwise to form a “V” shape. The V should be only slightly taller
than your glasses. If necessary, rip or cut a little bit off each end of the V to make it shorter.
● Use one paper towel to connect each pair of adjacent glasses. (Flip the V shape upside-down and
put one end in each cup.)
● Look closely at the ends of the paper towels that are in the glasses with water. What do you
notice?
● Take a break! This experiment goes very slowly. Come back in 15 or 20 minutes. What do you
see now?
● Keep checking on your setup over the next couple of hours. What happens?
● Let your test sit overnight, and check on it the next day. What does it look like now?

Guide Questions
1. What do you think will happen to the water?
2. Why do you think the colors are changing?
3. Why might the water be able to move up against gravity like that?

Results and Discussion: How does this Science experiment work?

In the walking water experiment, the tissue sips the water into the empty
cups. The color change is explained by the colored water mixing with the other
colored water. Due to capillary action, the water was able to move up against
gravity. In essence, the cohesive force within the water itself is weaker than the
adhesive force between the paper towel and the water. As a result, the paper towel
causes the water to be drawn up. Water keeps flowing into the second cup while it
continues to climb the paper towel and cross the bridge.
