Listen and choose the correct answer.
Carly Hey, Laura, it’s Carly.
Laura Hey, what’s up? You’re still coming to the party, right?
Carly Hmm, that’s why I’m calling. I’m so tired. I don’t think I can make it. I was really looking
forward to it. But I have to go to bed.
Laura Carly! This is due to all your late nights watching TV. You’re addicted to that stupid
show! If you had gone to bed at a normal time last night you wouldn’t be so tired.
Carly It’s true. I did stay up late. But it’s not only that. I’m tired from all the running too. I’m
training for a half marathon, remember? As a result of a fifteen-kilometer run
yesterday, my energy is totally gone. Because of the heat, it was really challenging. If I
hadn’t run that far and if it hadn’t been so hot, I wouldn’t have woken up so tired today.
It was impossible to get to school on time.
Laura When is your race?
Carly It’s in three weeks.
Laura I didn’t know it was so soon. If you had told me earlier, we could have changed the
date of the party. I really wanted you to come! It won’t be the same without you.
Carly That’s so sweet, Laura. Thank you. I promise I’ll come next time. I just need to focus
on this race.
Laura OK, I get it. You should get some sleep. Don’t stay up too late watching TV. It’s not
good for you. I worry about you, Laura.
Carly I’m going to bed soon. I just want some food and a bath and then I’m going to sleep.
No TV. Enjoy the party.
Laura Thanks for calling. I’m glad you told me. And your race is much more important than
the party. Don’t worry about it.
Carly Thanks, Laura! I knew you’d understand.

Reading and Use of English Exam 6

Part 1
You are going to read an excerpt from a novel in which a student called Alicia talks
about suffering from depression. For questions 1 – 5, choose the answer (A, B, C, or
D) you think fits best according to the text.
“You’ve got to speak to someone about this,” said the school nurse. “You need to see a
1
psychologist.”
She said it like it was the simplest thing in the world, as if I knew what that meant, as if I
2 knew how to find one, and as if I had the money to pay for one when I did. I didn’t
respond. She stared at me blankly. A heavy silence hung between us.
I don’t know what I expected when I went to see her. I only made an appointment
because Maria told me I should. Brilliant, beautiful, perfect Maria – so caring and kind. I
should be grateful I have such a good friend. But sometimes even her friendship makes
3
me feel worse about myself. It’s not that I want to be in the spotlight, but sometimes
being in the shadow of someone so clever doesn’t really help when you’re feeling
depressed.
There I said it. Depressed. You would think it would help to give this thick fog a name,
to realize that something can be done about it. Yet, somehow, it’s hard to say out loud. I
4 tried to say it to the nurse. “I think I’m...,” I hesitated. The word stuck in my throat. The
“d” became dramatic, difficult, dead inside. How can one little word communicate this
experience, this existence?
I should have taken Maria with me. She would have known what to say, what to ask. She
would have found out the name of a psychologist and come away with three leaflets on
5
how to get free sessions. It’s the irony of these illnesses; the people suffering from low
self-esteem are the ones who feel they don’t deserve help.
Caught in my thoughts about low self-esteem, I didn’t notice the nurse still staring at me.
You need to see a psychologist,” she repeated, and put a piece of paper in my hand. I got
6 up and walked out, still in a daze. Why hadn’t she said something else? Maybe she had. I
often had problems following conversations. Perhaps she had explained the next steps. I
felt like I was back to square one.
“Maria! What are you doing here?” She stood up and put her arms round me as I walked
7
back out into the waiting room.
“You really thought I’d let you come here on your own?” she said. “You took the first
8 step and I’m so proud of you. But you know we’re doing this together, right? We’re
going to get you well.”
Something in me cracked open. With her arms still around me, I started sobbing on her
shoulder. It was the first time in months that I’d cried and it felt good. I cried and cried,
9
as if I was crying myself back to life. Something had touched me, which meant there was
something inside.
10 “Thank you Maria,” I sobbed. “Thank you.”

Part 2
You are going to read a newspaper article in which a yoga teacher talks about her new
studio. Five sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from sentences A-
F which one fits locations 1-5. There is one extra sentence which you do not need to
use.

New yoga studio opened by former banker

Harrogate is welcoming its newest addition to the city’s wellness
industry, a new yoga studio on the site of the former pharmacy. The
building has been empty for the past six months, with rumors that it
might become a hair salon. [ 1 ]
The company belongs to Yolanda Matthews who has worked as a yoga
teacher for seven years in countries around the world, including
Thailand, Indonesia, and Australia. [ 2 ] We spoke to Yolanda to ask her
how she got into yoga.
“It’s a bit of a cliché, but I first tried yoga while I was backpacking in
India. I loved it immediately. But when I came back to the UK, I found
classes were very expensive. [ 3 ] I practiced in my bedroom using free
videos from YouTube. I decided to save up money to go back to India as
soon as possible.
“That dream came true after I graduated. I went back to India and
studied yoga every day for six months. I knew I wanted to become a yoga
teacher but I needed more experience – and more money. I had a degree
in economics and a job waiting for me in London in finance. [ 4 ] I lasted
one year. I hated being a banker. It didn’t suit me at all and it couldn’t
have been more different from my life in India. I decided to get my yoga
teacher training qualification and travel the world teaching.
“Now my new life is starting back here in my hometown, Harrogate. I’m
so excited to be able to serve the community by sharing my love of yoga.
[ 5 ] Ananda Yoga Studio is a place where we can do that.”

A ( ) I was only a student at that time so I couldn’t afford to spend money on going to
studios.
B ( ) I’m still hoping to go back to India at some point.
C ( ) In this busy, modern world, we all need to take time to relax and reconnect with
ourselves.
D ( ) Although she grew up in Harrogate, she worked in London as a banker before deciding
to move back home.
E ( ) So, after my six months were over, I reluctantly went back to the UK to start my job.
F ( ) But this week it opened its doors again under the name Ananda Yoga Studio.
