Mrs. Davis
encountered opportunities and factors that have changed me forever, and have experienced
classes that I didn’t think would really need. Gearing up for my dream career as a veterinarian, I
have had to come out of my comfort zone and rely on the support of my close friends and family.
Through the wild past few months of death, holidays, and stress, I have learned the best way to
handle school and my personal life. I have my classes to thank for this preparation.
This semester has changed me in more ways than one. To start off the seemingly quick
semester, I had got put into classes I did not care for. Honestly, why would I want to be in a
history, government, meat and animal carcass evaluation, and two different English classes? I
surely did not realize how grateful I am for these classes being my first semester of college.
History and government will always be boring to me, no doubt, but have been very interesting. I
didn’t realize how much to history there really was; coincidentally, this gave me a new-found
appreciation for the subject. Along with those two classes that I wasn’t too fond of at first, I grew
to like my meat and animal carcass evaluation class. One of the hardest classes I’ve had to take,
so far, in my education journey, but one of the most interesting. I can officially say that I can
look at livestock and know everything about it just based of physical features. I think my favorite
classes were my English classes. These classes have helped me grow to love writing and become
good at it. With these classes come opportunities. I have had the opportunity to grow and become
a better student, the opportunity to work with professors one-on-one to learn valuable life
lessons, and the opportunity to work with the community, animals, and numerous people I just
met. All of which, giving me valuable life skills that I intend to use forever. Of course, with all
this academic growth, you must take care of yourself too. I make time for the gym, or even just a
small workout in my room to get my blood flowing. When I am not doing that, I spoil myself
with snacks and Netflix. Self-care is a vital part in your health and success. With all said, my
classes, the opportunities they present, and the self-care that allows me to achieve them, have all
made this semester go smoothly and, I believe, have made me a better student and person.
The importance of coming to college is to achieve your career and to grow in your
knowledge. There are many different fields in my career that I can go into that I never really
knew about. I can have specialties, go work for big companies that produce dog food, work for
companies that handle meat and poultry, and I could work at my own pace if I wanted to. I can
be a veterinarian everywhere and I think that is the most fascinating part. I have all the resources
around me at my school to help me reach this goal. When I go back home, I can volunteer and
intern to get more hands-on experiences to help me build this future. I would like to know more
about what it takes to be a veterinarian. I know all the requirements, but I want to know real life
struggles and experiences, and what it will take out of me as a person to get there. I have not
reconsidered my goal to get this career, yet, but I do have a back of plan if I decide being a
teacher. I love kids and although the pay isn’t as much, it’s a career I know I’ll enjoy in the end.
Support is a huge requirement to succeed in college. Not enough support can break you,
your confidence, and your academic success. Not talked about enough, is how much support I
am getting. Recently, my father passed away, and he was my biggest supporter. He was the one
who encouraged me to come to OSU. At first, I thought him, and his side of his family were the
only ones supporting in my academic journey. Being here, after everything happened, I realized
my support system is huge. I have not only my dad’s support from heaven, but I have my friends
back home, my friends here, his side of the family, my mom’s side of the family, and my
boyfriend’s family. Everyone I know is by my side as I work towards my goal. Support has made
me a better student and made me want to achieve bigger things. Again, support is the key to
success in college.
I am unsure how I could have handled this semester without the support from everyone I
know. If college has taught me anything so far, it’s that you are still growing and that is okay. I
don’t mean physical, I mean mentally; in relation to, each one of my classes has helped me grow
more character and has changed the way I see myself, and my future. I wouldn’t say that I am
sad classes are coming to an end, but I am happy with the way they left me.
