Procedure for running PET IV test in LMI5500

Please make sure the LMI5500 is setup in accordance to ASTM D1238 or ISO 1133-
1 and verify that it is within calibration.

1) Please create the recipe in LMI5500 as below: (Reference IV Method B Testing on

2) Make sure that a vacuum oven is located close to the instrument to limit moisture
contamination during transfer of the sample. Weigh separate 6.0 grams of samples (using the
glass beaker included in the LMI tool kit) and dry them separately in a vacuum oven at about 30-
40 mBar and purge for 4 hrs. at 150 C. For most effective and consistent drying, please insert one
beaker at a time. Wait around 30 minutes before inserting each subsequent beaker (this delay
allows for consistent drying time between tests) allowing the operator to start testing the second
sample immediately after finishing with the first test while all samples are exposed to the same
heat duration.

3) Make sure that the barrel, piston, and die in LMI are clean. (Reference cleaning video on
www.dynisco.com or YouTube Link)

4) Start heating up the LMI with the die and piston inserted
into the barrel and with high flow plug in place. After reaching
setpoint, wait additional 5-10 minutes for temperature
stability.

5) Remove the piston from the LMI then immediately take the first sample out of oven and
immediately charge it inside the heated barrel in 2 steps. Load half of material and pack it, then
put the second half and pack it again using the packing tool. Make sure this whole charging step
completed within 1 minute Be consistent with charging time between different tests in order
improve repeatability of the data.

6) Insert the piston into the barrel put the load on the piston and bring the encoder arm up.

7) Press the LMI screen to start pre-heating time to allow for consistent melt of the PET pellets.
8.) Remove the high flow plug immediately after pre-heat time is finished. Wipe the plug tip
immediately with a soft cotton cloth to remove any PET residue. Never use any kind of blade to
remove PET from the plug, any damage to the plug tip will result in leakage for subsequent tests.

9.) During encoder measurements (encoder activates between first and second scribe mark on
the piston), make sure that the exudates are free of any bubbles and any air bubble is not bursting.
If there is an air bubble during a flag measurement, that flag
reading will not be valid. You can discard that flag from your
measurements. (This process can be automated to ensure
consistency between test operators and locations.)

9) After finishing the test, the data can be saved to a USB stick
or press “Send data to the cloud”.

10) Make sure to clean barrel, piston and die properly

between each test per the cleaning video Link or according to
the manual located on www.dynisco.com
