自序
AUTHOR’S PREFACE

Mantis Boxing often emphasizes handwork and footwork that is compact,
nimble, and quick, but those who have only superficial skill often make the
errors of moving airily or sluggishly. For this reason, there are sets such as Four-
Line Running & Striking and Large-Scale Postures, which supply a standard of
performance in order for those who are making such errors to receive
comprehensive correction. However, each set has some postures that are not
only hard to understand from a book, but present a great many difficulties even
during personal instruction. If you have not gone through the experience of
training in many fundamental boxing sets [such as Dodging Hardness, Charging
Punches, Eighteen Elders, and so on], you will not be able to easily learn these
[more advanced sets]. I hope you will deeply ponder the essentials within these
sets so that you will not end up misleading either yourself or others.

Posture 1: SEALING PALMS, STANDING STABLY
說明:
Explanation:
Assume this boxing set begins from the eastern part of the practice space. You
will therefore be standing in the east, with the east on your right, the west on
your left, the north in front of you, the south behind you. With your gaze toward
the west, your palms deflect away to the rear. See photo 1a:

Then they lift until they are over your shoulders. See photo 1b:
Then they come straight down from above to be at their final position. See photo
1c:
功用:
Application:
This is the opening posture of this boxing set. Its only purpose is to orient you
and put you in a stable state. There is no practical technique involved other than
to regulate the breath and quiet the mind, both of which will be quite helpful to
you.
Posture 2: HOOKING HAND, RIGHT BRACING PALM
說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, with your feet still not moving, first your
left hand goes forward as a hooking hand. See photo 2a:

Then your left hand arcs to the rear, arm straight, as your right palm braces out
from below your waist. See photo 2b:
功用:
Application:
An opponent right in front of me punches straight to my face, so I send my left
hand forward to hook it away, then send my right palm charging to his face, a
“tooth for a tooth” situation.
Posture 3: HOOKING HAND, LEFT BRACING PALM
說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, with your feet still not moving, first your
right palm becomes a hooking hand. See photo 3a:
Then your right hand withdraws to the rear as your left palm braces out from
below your waist. It is the same movement as in the previous posture, just on
the other side. See photo 3b:
功用:
Application:
When I strike out with my right palm, the opponent sends out a hand to meet it,
so I quickly change it into a hooking hand to hook away his incoming hand, and
once I have securely covered over his hand, I then brace out with my left palm in
a surprise attack to his upper area. This action combines with the previous
posture to become a continuous series of techniques.
Posture 4: HOOKING HAND, RIGHT CARRYING PALM
說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, first your left palm changes into a
hooking hand. See photo 4a:

Then your left foot steps out to make a left sitting-tiger stance, your left hooking
hand at the same time pulling back to the rear as your right hooking hand
switches to a palm and carries forward and upward. See photo 4b:
(Note: Although the palm’s action is similar to the previous posture, it was in
that case a bracing palm and is in this case a carrying palm.)
功用:
Application:
Both of my bracing palms are drawn off by the opponent, and as my position of
standing straight leaves me too far away from him, I step out into an empty
stance to close the distance and switch from using a bracing palm to a carrying
palm to have a better chance of sneaking it through.
Posture 5: HOOKING HAND, LEFT CARRYING PALM
說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, first your right palm changes into a
hooking hand. See photo 5a:
Then your right foot steps out to make a right sitting-tiger stance, your right
hooking hand at the same time pulling back to the rear as your right hooking
hand switches to a palm and carries forward and upward. See photo 5b:
功用:
Application:
The opponent again uses a hand to draw off or block my attacking palm, so I
hook it away and use a carrying palm to attack his throat. This is a rather vicious
technique.
Posture 6: HOOK & PALM, SITTING-TIGER STANCE
說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, first your left palm changes to a hooking
hand. See photo 6a:
Then your left foot advances to make a left sitting-tiger stance, your left hand
pulling to the rear, your right palm going forward to be placed higher than your
head as a sideways palm. Your gaze is to the left. See photo 6b:
功用:
Application:
The opponent sends a hand to connect with my left palm, so I use my left hand
to hook around it, then send a sideways palm to sweep it away. This palm can
thread through between his elbows, as well as shield my head.
Posture 7: MOUNTAIN-CLIMBING STANCE, SEAL & THRUST PUNCH
說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, first your left foot steps out to the left, i.e.
to the west, to make a mountain-climbing stance, your left hand going forward
as a sealing hand. See photo 7a:

Then your left hand withdraws to your waist as your right fist goes out with a
thrust punch. See photo 7b:
功用:
Application:
The opponent moves off diagonally to my left and attacks my middle area with a
punch, so I step out with my left foot to oppose him, first using my left hand to
seal off his fist, then using my right fist to quickly strike to his chest.
Posture 8: THRUST PUNCH, CROSS-SHAPED KICK
說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, with your stance not changing, first your
right fist changes to a sealing hand and goes forward to seal off. See photo 8a:
Then your right fist withdraws to the rear as your left fist and right leg go out in
unison. See photo 8b:
功用:
Application:
The opponent sends out a hand to block my right thrust punch, so I immediately
seal it off and then perform a cross-shaped kick to attack him above and below
simultaneously, dividing his attention and throwing his posture into confusion.
Posture 9: HORSE-RIDING STANCE, HEART-STEALING PUNCH
說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, your right foot steps down to make a
horse-riding stance of right foot forward, left foot behind, and your left fist
withdraws to your waist as your right fist goes straight out from your waist until
level. See photo 9:
功用:
Application:
The opponent sees my cross-shaped kick coming at him and tries to use a hand
to block my leg, so I step down into a very stable horse-riding stance and use my
right fist to attack his chest with the technique of BLACK TIGER STEALS THE
HEART.
Posture 10: TURN AROUND, HOOK & KICK
說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, turn [leftward] to be facing toward the
east, your back toward the west, letting your right fist slightly lower to be
diagonal as your left hand hooks to the rear, your left foot at the same time
kicking to the rear. Although this technique seems to involve more movement
than posture, it is nevertheless stable. See photo 10:
功用:
Application:
The opponent suddenly evades behind me and attacks, or another opponent
comes in from behind to try to get me trapped in a pincer attack, therefore I
turn to deal with this new threat by employing a technique involving a hooking
hand and a kicking leg, eliminating that half of the pincer. I can then follow this
up by suddenly attacking with another kicking technique.
Posture 11: SWINGING PUNCH, CONTINUOUS KICKING
說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, without waiting for your left foot to come
down, launch your right foot up (thereby making the action of “continuous
kicking”), your right fist at the same time swinging across to the left. Leg and
hand have to go out in unison. Although again more movement than posture, it
is still easy to understand. See photo 11:
功用:
Application:
This technique and the previous technique together have a quality of continuous
action. When my left foot kicks, the opponent has to evade or block, but I will
not wait for him to decide which, so I now attack with my right foot while
swinging across to strike to his upper area. Receiving attacks both above and
below, he is thus too occupied to trouble me.
Posture 12: KNEELING STANCE, RIGHT PRESSING FOREARM
說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, first your right foot steps down, then
your left foot pulls forward to make a kneeling stance, your right fist at the same
time lowering from above and pushing out from inside, the knuckles facing
upward, elbow bent, your left fist touching the inside of your right forearm to
assist the pushing energy. See photo 12:
功用:
Application:
The opponent tries to send a hand across to prevent my continuous kick, so I
quickly bring my foot down and lower my stance, then use the short-range
technique of a pressing forearm to push to his chest. The pressing-forearm
technique and the rolling-forearm technique have the same principle, except
that the former goes straight ahead, whereas the latter goes across. With the
arms coming together, elbows bent, the focused power of the attack contains the
energy of a lion catching a rabbit.
Posture 13: BIG-DIPPER STANCE, LEFT HOOKING HAND
說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture (this posture turning from east to west),
with your feet not leaving their location, you simply turn your body around to
the left to make a left big-dipper stance, your right fist withdrawing to your
waist, your left hand going out as a hooking hand. See photo 13:
功用:
Application:
The opponent moves around behind me to punch to my back, or another
opponent attacks from behind at the same time, so I turn the front into the rear
[and thus the rear into the front] and meet him in an empty stance, using a
hooking hand to seal him off and keep his attack from reaching me. Once I have
hooked away his attack, I can then continue into the following posture to attack
him.
Posture 14: BIG-DIPPER STANCE, RIGHT FILLING PUNCH
說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, your right foot advances to make a right
big-dipper stance as your right fist strikes out from your waist with a filling
punch. See photo 14:
功用:
Application:
In the previous posture, I hooked the opponent’s hand. If I do not follow this
with an attack, then I would be failing to capitalize on the hooking hand, so I
advance and send my right fist straight to his chest area. The hooking hand
creates a gap. If I do not fill that gap, then the hooking hand had no purpose,
but without the hooking hand, the filling punch would not succeed. This is the
why there are so many instances within Mantis Boxing sets that a hooking hand
is followed with a filling punch.
Posture 15: MOUNTAIN-CLIMBING STANCE, RIGHT SUBDUING PUNCH
說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, your feet maintain their position, except
that your right foot comes down forward about half a foot to make a right
mountain-climbing stance, your left hand at the same time going forward and
sealing downward from above [as your right fist withdraws to your waist]. See
photo 15a:
Then your right fist thrusts forward and upward from below with the elbow
bent. See photo 15b:
功用:
Application:
Regardless of whether the opponent seals off or blocks my attacking hand, in
either case I will use a counter-sealing method of firmly sealing off his defending
hand with my left hand as my right fist pulls back with the elbow bending, and
then my right fist thrusts upward from below to attack his chin. The final
position looks no different from an avalanche punch, except that an avalanche
punch strikes downward, whereas a subduing punch thrusts upward.
Posture 16: HORSE-RIDING STANCE, STRAIGHT THRUST PUNCH
說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, first your right foot slightly pulls back,
then your left foot forcefully darts forward, causing your whole body to advance,
your feet about a half step apart, as your left fist becomes a palm and threads
out, your right fist pulling back. See photo 16a:

Your right fist sinks down, and once it has withdrawn almost to your waist, it
then thrusts out, [your left hand withdrawing to your right shoulder,] as you go
forward into a horse-riding stance. See photo 16b:
功用:
Application:
The opponent sends a hand to block my subduing punch, so I withdraw a step as
my left palm threads forward to divert his blocking hand, then dart forward to
change the situation, my front foot suddenly advancing as I use my right fist to
send a heart-stealing punch straight to his chest.
Posture 17: MOUNTAIN-CLIMBING STANCE, RIGHT SUBDUING PUNCH
說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, your feet maintain their position, except
that your right foot comes down forward about half a foot to make a right
mountain-climbing stance, your left hand at the same time going forward and
sealing downward from above [as your right fist withdraws to your waist]. See
photo 17a:
Then your right fist thrusts forward and upward from below with the elbow
bent, same as in Posture 15. See photo 17b:
Posture 18: HORSE-RIDING STANCE, STRAIGHT THRUST PUNCH
說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, first your right foot slightly pulls back,
then your left foot forcefully darts forward causing your whole body to advance,
your feet about a half step apart, as your left fist becomes a palm and threads
out, your right fist pulling back. See photo 18a:
Your right fist sinks down, and once it has withdrawn almost to your waist, it
then thrusts out, [your left hand withdrawing to your right shoulder,] as you go
forward into a horse-riding stance. See photo 18b:

my left palm threads forward to divert his blocking hand, then dart forward to
change the situation, my front foot suddenly advancing as I use my right fist to
send a heart-stealing punch straight to his chest.
Posture 19: MOUNTAIN-CLIMBING STANCE, RIGHT SUBDUING PUNCH
說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, your feet maintain their position, except
that your right foot comes down forward about half a foot to make a right
mountain-climbing stance, your left hand at the same time going forward and

punch strikes downward, whereas a subduing punch thrusts upward.
Posture 20: HORSE-RIDING STANCE, STRAIGHT THRUST PUNCH
說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, first your right foot slightly pulls back,
then your left foot forcefully darts forward causing your whole body to advance,
your feet about a half step apart, as your left fist becomes a palm and threads
out, your right fist pulling back. See photo 20a:
Your right fist sinks down, and once it has withdrawn almost to your waist, it
then thrusts out, [your left hand withdrawing to your right shoulder,] as you go
forward into a horse-riding stance. See photo 20b:
功用:
Application:
The opponent sends a hand to block my subduing punch, so I withdraw a step as
my left palm threads forward to divert his blocking hand, then dart forward to
change the situation, my front foot suddenly advancing as I use my right fist to
send a heart-stealing punch straight to his chest.
Posture 21: MOUNTAIN-CLIMBING STANCE, RIGHT SUBDUING PUNCH
說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, your feet maintain their position, except
that your right foot goes forward about half a foot to make a right mountain-
climbing stance, your left hand at the same time going forward and sealing
downward from above [as your right fist withdraws to your waist]. See photo
21a:
Then your right fist thrusts forward and upward from below with the elbow
bent. See photo 21b:
Posture 22: SEALING HANDS, LEFT SCOOPING KICK
說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, your left hand becomes a palm and
threads out from below your right ribs. See photo 22a:
Then your left hand performs a sealing action and pulls to the left rear,
becoming a fist, as your right fist swings diagonally toward the lower left with an
action similar to the technique of slicing through the waist and your left foot
does a scooping kick diagonally to the right with the foot sideways. See photo
22b:
功用:
Application:
The opponent sends out a hand to block my subduing punch, so I send my left
hand threading out to seal it off and yank it diagonally to the rear as I send out
my left foot to smash his front leg and swing my right fist diagonally toward his
waist. This technique is similar to Posture 42 of the Avalanche Steps set
(DRAWING THE NEEDLE, SLICING THROUGH THE WAIST), except in this
case striking with hardness rather than softness.
Posture 23: CENTERING STANCE, RIGHTWARD DRAMATIC CIRCLE
說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, first your left foot comes down to the rear
[passing in front of you] (this posture turning around [rightward] from the west
toward the east). See photo 23a:
Then your right foot steps out toward the east to make a right centering stance,
your hands at the same time going to the rear as sealing hands, the center of the
right hand facing downward, the center of the left hand facing upward, and
forcefully pulling across downward to the right, becoming fists by the time they
reach their final position. See photo 23b:
功用:
Application:
An opponent behind me uses a low technique to suddenly attack my middle or
lower area, so I bring my left foot down to the rear and send my hands to
diagonally seal him off. The centering stance is the most appropriate means of
getting near him in this situation.
Posture 24: MOUNTAIN-CLIMBING STANCE, SWINGING PUNCH
說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, first your right foot advances toward the
front to make a right mountain-climbing stance, then your right fist goes from
below and behind, swinging across above toward the left, your left fist becoming
a palm and striking against your right forearm, making an audible crack. See
photo 24:
功用:
Application:
After the opponent has been drawn off, he tries to send a fist to attack me from
my left side, so I let go of his other arm and immediately swing my right fist
across to strike to his left temple. This puts him in a situation of having to deal
with an attack below and then another one above, being also a combining of
attacks from one side to another. This keeps his attack from getting to me and
then forces him to use his other fist to attack, but I must not fail to capitalize on
the position I have gained from using the dramatic-circle technique. This is an
example of the tactic of starting with a retreat in order to advance.
Posture 25: HORSE-RIDING STANCE, SLIPPING BELOW TO PRESS AWAY
THE KNEE
說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, your right foot shifts forward and you
switch to a horse-riding stance as your swinging punch follows through by
coming down and smashing across to the lower right, your left palm shifting to
be over your right shoulder. See photo 25:
功用:
Application:
The opponent ducks his head to evade my swinging punch, so I immediately
switch into a horse-riding stance, my right hand slipping downward and then
smashing across to his front leg. This will appear to be just a casual hand
movement, but a hand technique that can smash an opponent’s front leg is a
noteworthy technique. This posture and the previous posture link together to
embody the Mantis Boxing principle of “striking above, guard below”. This
posture is similar in effect to the technique of THREADING HAND,
ATTACKING HIS STANCE in [Posture 18 of] the Dodging Hardness boxing set.
Posture 26: MOUNTAIN-CLIMBING STANCE, RIGHT SUBDUING PUNCH
說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, your feet stay where they are, except that
your left leg presses straight to switch you to a right mountain-climbing stance
as your left hand goes forward, sealing downward from above [your right fist
withdrawing to your waist]. See photo 26a:
Then your right fist thrusts upward from below, the elbow bent. See photo 26b:
功用:
Application:
The subduing punch looks and feels like a short-range technique, but actually
with the body leaning into it, the shoulder reaching out as much as it can, and
the focus being on thrusting out to strike to the opponent’s chin, it is no less
long-range than any other long-range technique. Furthermore, the bending of
the elbow enables you to concentrate force into the target, making it an excellent
technique indeed.
Posture 27: KNEELING STANCE, RIGHT SLICING THROUGH THE WAIST
說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, first your left foot advances and then
your right foot pulls in to make a kneeling stance as your left fist threads out
forward from below your right elbow to block over your head with the fist
sideways and your right fist becomes a palm and swings out diagonally to the
left. The three actions of advancing, threading with the left fist, and slicing
through the waist are to be performed in unison, in order to prevent the posture
from falling into disorder. See photo 27:

功用:
Application:
The opponent sends out a hand to block my subduing punch, so I send my left
hand threading out as I advance to crowd his stance and my right fist becomes a
palm and cuts to his waist with the hand sideways. This causes a break in
coordination between his upper body and lower body, putting him in situation
of losing his balance.
Posture 28: MOUNTAIN-CLIMBING STANCE, RIGHT BACKHANDED PALM
STRIKE
說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, your right foot advances to make a right
mountain-climbing stance as your left fist becomes a palm, covering downward
from above, and your right palm rolls over inward and then forward, covering
downward from above with the back of the palm. See photo 28:

功用:
Application:
The opponent uses a long-range technique to attack my middle area, so I
advance, first using my left palm to cover his hand, then sending my right palm
to attack his head with the technique of MT. TAI CRUSHES THE HEAD. This
technique lies somewhere between OVERTURNED-SKY STAMP and MT. TAI
CRUSHES THE HEAD, being not quite as powerful as MT. TAI CRUSHES THE
HEAD, but quicker than OVERTURNED-SKY STAMP.
Posture 29: DOUBLE SEALING HANDS, PAVING KICK
說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, first your left foot stomps forward next to
your right foot. See photo 29a:

Then your left hand threads out from below and your hands switch to a sealing
action as your right foot slightly lifts. See photo 29b:
Then your hands push out forward to the left, your arms straightening, as your
right foot goes to the right rear, scraping out with the heel touching the ground,
finishing in what is almost a mountain-climbing stance. See photo 29c:
功用:
Application:
This is the Mantis Boxing technique of grabbing in front and snapping to the
rear. While my hands seal off the opponent’s wrist and elbow, I send my right
leg pressing to the rear [thus dragging his front leg], causing his upper body and
lower body to be incapable of coordinating with each other, putting me in the
advantageous position.
Posture 30: MOUNTAIN-CLIMBING STANCE, SEAL & THRUST PUNCH
說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, first your right hand goes forward to the
right, sealing away, as your right foot shifts inward to be on a straight east-west
line. See photo 30a:
Then your right [left] fist strikes out with a level straight punch, thus completing
the technique of seal & thrust punch. See photo 30b:
功用:
Application:
When I perform the paving kick, my hands and step are going out along a
diagonal line. The opponent takes advantage of this opportunity by suddenly
sending out a hand to strike to my face from the straight direction. I therefore
use a sealing action to return me to the straight line, then send my left fist
thrusting out to strike to his middle or upper area.
Posture 31: HORSE-RIDING STANCE, RIGHT BRACING PALM
說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, your right foot slightly advances and
your left leg bends to make a horse-riding stance as your right fist becomes a
palm and thrusts out from your waist, your left fist becoming a palm and
withdrawing to your right shoulder. See photo 31:

功用:
Application:
The opponent tries to send out a hand to block my left thrust punch, so I quickly
dart forward using a bracing-palm technique to strike to his middle area with
my palm sideways. This is a method of sending out on one side while pulling
back the other. People sometimes think that using a palm strike instead of a
punch makes for a clumsier technique, but this technique of darting forward
with a bracing palm to an opponent’s waist is actually no less powerful than a
punch. Furthermore, it possesses a frightening speed that makes it a noteworthy
technique.
Posture 32: MOUNTAIN-CLIMBING STANCE, RIGHT AVALANCHE PUNCH
說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, the position of your feet does not change,
but your left leg straightens to make a mountain-climbing stance as your left
hand goes forward to seal downward from above [your right hand withdrawing
to your waist]. See photo 32a:

Then your right arm bends and sends the fist outward from the inside, striking
downward from above. It is the opposite action of the upward thrust of the
subduing punch. See photo 32b:
功用:
Application:
The subduing punch thrusts upward from below, a short-range technique using
hardness. The avalanche punch strikes downward from above, also a short-
range technique using hardness. Judging only by the final position, they would
of course appear to be identical techniques. The opponent sends out a hand to
attack my middle area, so I first seal it off, then from a bent-arm position strike
downward with a backfist, an action of extreme hardness and quickness.
Posture 33: RIGHT DOOR-CLOSING KICK
說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, your right fist withdraws, striking against
your body, as you sit back onto your left foot, then your right foot kicks out until
the leg is straight, the toes slightly angled toward the left. This angling of the
toes is the biggest difference between the door-closing kick and the cross-
shaped kick. See photo 33:
功用:
Application:
When my avalanche punch comes down to strike to the opponent’s head, he will
focus all of his attention upon dealing with it, therefore I suddenly send out a
kick, causing him to have no way of handling both attacks, one above and one
below. The door-closing kick is somewhat higher than ordinary raising kicks
because it is aimed more diagonally rather than straight ahead. You have to be
able to attack an opponent’s vital areas from any angle.
Posture 34: SITTING-TIGER STANCE, RIGHT CARRYING PALMS
說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, first your right foot comes down to the
rear by going in front of you to the left, making a position similar to a stealth
step. See photo 34a:
Then your left foot retreats and your right foot pulls back to make a right sitting-
tiger stance as your hands become palms and carry upward from below, one
hand at long range, the other hand at short range, your right elbow slightly bent,
the fingertips of both hands pointing upward. See photo 34b:
功用:
Application:
Wanting to attack my upper area, the opponent sends out a hand to grab my
hair, so I retreat a step and then send out my hands, one active and the other
passive, i.e. one at long range and the other at short range. He quickly decides to
pull back, and thus it will now be easy for me to control his elbow.
Posture 35: RETREATING WITH TRIPLE WINCHING
說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, your right foot retreats to the west,
passing in front of your left foot, similar to a stealth-step position, as your right
palm becomes a fist and whips out upward from below, the forearm striking
against your left palm midway through, making an audible crack, and your left
foot retreats [to almost make a mountain-climbing stance]. See photo 35a:
Then you sit back onto your left foot to make a right big-dipper stance, after
which your right fist will then continue past head height. See photo 35b:
(Note: The positions in these photos are then repeated twice, meaning that the
posture is performed a total of three times, thus fulfilling the name of the
posture.)
功用:
Application:
The opponent rapidly attacks with a barrage of punches, so I am compelled to
employ this method of lowering into my stance while sending out blocking fists.
This technique of continuously dispelling a flurry of attacks can also be used as a
means of counterattacking.
Posture 36: TURN AROUND, DOUBLE HOOKING, WEAVING KICK
說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, first your body twists to the left as your
hands become hooking hands and hook together downward to the forward left.
See photo 36a:

Then your right foot kicks out. See photo 36b:
功用:
Application:
An opponent comes to attack me from behind with a fist, so I turn around and
use double hooking hands to firmly hook away his incoming hand, then lift my
right foot and attack him with a raising kick to the groin.
Posture 37: SITTING-TIGER STANCE, LEFT CARRYING PALMS
說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, first your right foot comes down in front
of your left foot, similar to a stealth-step position. See photo 37a:
Then you turn around to the left so that you are facing toward the west, the east
behind you, and you send out three carrying palms (your left palm rising, then
your right, then your left again). See photo 37b:
功用:
Application:
The opponent deflects my kick and now tries to attack my head, so I spin around
to evade his force and then do a carrying-palms technique to make a flurry of
upward blocks, rendering him unable to find a way in.
Posture 38: SITTING-TIGER STANCE, RIGHT CARRYING PALMS
說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, first your left foot retreats and then your
right foot pulls back to make a right sitting-tiger stance as you send out three
carrying palms (right, left, right). See photo 38:
功用:
Application:
After the opponent fails to reach me with one hand, he sends out his other hand
to strike me, so I again retreat to evade it, again causing him to be unable to
reach me and making it easy for me to counterattack. The carrying-palms
technique occurs frequently in Mantis Boxing. It is a technique involving
softness. One of the most important things in fighting is to keep your hair from
being grabbed, for once your hair has been grabbed, any action of pulling on it
will affect your entire body and thus putting you in a losing position. The
carrying-palms technique exists for this very situation, and thus I hope you will
not overlook its importance.
Posture 39: ADVANCING WITH LARGE WHEELING
說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, advance with sliding steps, your right
foot in front, left foot behind, continuously sliding forward, not stopping until
you have reached the farthest point, as your fists continuously chop downward,
one rising as the other lowers, one going forward as the other goes back,
alternately swinging forward. There is no specific amount of arm swings or steps
to be performed. Continuously advance in the pattern of photos 39a and 39b:
Repeat the movement until you have reached the western limit of the practice
space [upon which you finish your advance by chopping down with your right
fist forward and then you will continue right into retreating]. See photo 39c:

功用:
Application:
The wheeling technique is long-range and fast, and therefore it is useful as a
rapid and reaching attack. Practice it perseveringly to gain the full benefit of it
and do not look down upon it as being overly simplistic.
Posture 40: RETREATING WITH LARGE WHEELING
說明:
Explanation:
Continuing from the previous posture, retreat toward the east with your fists
still wheeling forward, continuously chopping down from above with the arms
straight, alternating left and right, your steps at the same time continuously
retreating one step after another [i.e. backpedaling instead of using sliding steps
with one foot remaining the front foot and the other remaining the back foot].
See photos 40a and 40b:
Finish by chopping down with just your right fist. See photo 40c:
功用:
Application:
The wheeling technique is not only a fierce method of attack, it is also an
important means of blocking attacks from all directions. I hope you will not
overlook it.
Posture 41: TURN AROUND, TURNING THE HAND OVER, SCOOPING KICK

your right foot scoops out diagonally toward the east. See photo 41b:

An opponent behind me suddenly attacks, so I turn around to face him with my
right fist raising high and then smashing down as my left fist threads upward to
dispel his incoming punch, and I also send out a scooping kick with my foot
sideways. This gathering of hand actions and a kicking action into a single
movement makes it a noteworthy technique.
