1. DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION.

A. DESCRIPTION

(1) This manual contains maintenance and overhaul instructions for Aircraft
Cabin Portable Fire Extinguishers, type numbers:

BA21783 series 2.5Kg BCF (Halon 1211)

BA20789 series 2.5Kg BCF (Halon 1211)
BA22594 series 2.5Kg BCF (Halon 1211)

(2) BCF (Halon 1211) extinguisher vessel contains extinguishing agent BCF
(Halon 1211). The containers are pressurized with Dry Nitrogen. Actuation of
the extinguisher is accomplished by manual trigger action.

(3) The basic cylinder of the extinguisher consists of a seamless aluminium

cylindrical container. Each extinguisher is fitted with an acytal co-polymer
head, fitted with a Verton RF700-10 trigger, containing a spring-loaded
plunger and secondary seal.

(4) Some of the Fire Extinguishers in the part number BA20789 series and
BA22594 series are fitted with a special discharge nozzle that enables the
extinguisher to be used in a flush mounted bulkhead fitting.

(5) The UK standard colour for all BCF (Halon 1211) extinguishers is green.

(6) Suffix letters to the part numbers of extinguishers are defined as follows:

R = Colour of container RED (BCF units only)

Y = Colour of container YELLOW (BCF units only)

G= Container fitted with GAUGE.

S= Short trigger fitted.

(7) Refer to section 7 of this CMM, Illustrated Parts List, and Service Information
Letter, SIL 26-127, for current replacement part information.

(8) IMPORTANT

The transit pin, Illustrated Parts List item 130 and figure 1, must be removed
when installing the extinguisher into the airframe-mounting bracket. The
safety pin and label must be returned to stores for safe retention.

B. OPERATION.

(1) Remove Extinguisher (Fig 1) form bracket (Fig 2).

(2) Release Extinguisher safety catch by lifting up.

(3) Aim Extinguisher at base of fire.

(4) Squeeze trigger. This fractures the frangible seal on the syphon tube assembly
discharging the contents through nozzle. On releasing the trigger, the spring
forces the cylindrical piston onto the secondary seal ‘O’ ring thus interrupting
the flow of extinguishant and preventing leakage of any remaining agent in the
container.

(5) Operation of the trigger also fractures the indicator disc Fig 1 (140) REF,
causing it to eject from the discharge head assembly Fig 1 (100), thus providing
a visual indication that the extinguisher has been used.

(6) The optimum distance from the fire for effective firefighting, is between 4 and 6
feet, with the extinguisher held within 30° either side of vertical.
