Renewing a Portuguese Driver’s License

Rui Caetano & Jeff Spirer

Driver’s license expiration is very different in Portugal than in the US. Until you are 60, licenses
are valid for 15 years. Then, they expire at 60, 65, and 70. After 70, they expire every two years.
There are exceptions to this rule, but they are for generally for people who drive ambulances,
firetrucks, buses, etc.

To renew your license, you may need to get a medical exam and pay a fee. The medical exam is
required for all renewals from age 60 on. Note that this means you may want to be careful
about when you get your license, if you have a choice. If you get your first license at 59 ½ you
will have a medical exam and pay a fee, and then repeat at 60.

As with the initial license, the doctor will put the exam certification into the system and IMT will
automatically retrieve it.

To renew online, start at the IMT site: http://www.imtonline.pt/

At the home page, click on Condutores to get information about renewal.

Go to the page to get to the correct login - https://servicos.imt-

ip.pt/login.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2fdefault.aspx Do not use the box on the right.
Under Particulares, click on Entrar. This will take you to the login page.

Fortunately, you do not require a new login for IMT, login with your NIF and Finanças password.
Enter your data, click on Autenticar, and then authorize on the popup window.

Next, create a profile on the site.

Be meticulous when creating your profile. The system will not locate your current DL if there
are any errors in your profile. NOTE that the Residency Permit number associated with your DL
is the one used when you initially received your Driver’s License; if you renewed your Residence
Permit after getting your DL, your current Permit number is different.

The screenshot below provides an example on how to fill out nationality and insert your
Documento Identificacao (Document Identification). The Documento Identificacao No is your
Titulo de Residencia number at the top right corner of your card.

Pay particular attention to the Documento Identificacao/Identification document. Complete all

fields that you can. However, it is only necessary to provide your bank account if they will be
issuing you a refund.

Once this is working go to the Pedidos/Requests screen and see if you can click the option
Consulta de última carta de condução emitida/Consulation of last drivers license Issued to see
your drivers license information. It there is information there then you created your profile
correctly otherwise you will get an error message. If for any reason you get an error take a
screenshot and email it to the email address shown along with what you were doing at the time
and a reason to why you think you are getting the error.

The page after you login will have a box with a tab for Condutores (Drivers) at the left. First click
on the top left link in the box - Consulta de última carta de condução emitida That will take you
to the data the system has on you. Make sure the information is correct. If the address is
incorrect, you may have to go to Finanças to change it, as this information may come from the
NIF record.

Then go back and click on Pedido de Carta de Condução From here, you will have to follow the
links to renew. Unfortunately, I can’t give the exact pages as I didn’t log them and it does not
allow renewing again.

At the end, you will be given payment information; if you don’t see it on the webpage, don’t
worry as the payment information comes in email. Assuming you are paying with direct debit,
and I don’t remember if they offered any alternative, you will have to wait 24 hours before
paying, then put the information in via your bank’s website or phone app, or at a Multibanco
machine.

When you pay 24 hours later, you will get email(s) telling you the payment has been received
and where to find information. Go back to the IMT website, login, click on the Receibos tab (see
the second screenshot above) and you will see that a receipt is available for the renewal.
Click on the Descarregar button and you will download a PDF of your receipt. It is probably
good to carry this with you if you drive after license expiration and don’t have any other proof.

You can track the process of your order, which hopefully results in a new license by clicking on
the Lista de Pedidos tab. The new license should come within a week. The letter that
accompanies the new license says you should also carry your old license until a month after the
start date for the new one.

That’s about it. If you have problems, IMT is surprisingly good at responding. However, all of my
contact with them, whether on the website or email, is in Portuguese.
If you go through this process and can keep a note of the pages after the actual renewal starts,
please message them to Jeff Spirer and this document will be updated.
