PURPOSIVE COMMUNICATION

MODULE 3A

Activity:

To stimulate our understanding of how Ethics affect Communication, let us

analyze the image below.

Imagine that the Blue Jenga blocks represent Communication, what do you

think would happen if Ethics (the Red Jenga) would be removed from this

stack? What does it signify?

- In my perspective, if ethics is removed from communication, there would be

no good manners when communicating and it would result in total chaos, for

example, a conversation without applying ethics would result into

misunderstanding and would lead to a physical fight. Just like the jenga blocks

if you remove the ethics from it which is the red jenga the other blocks would

start to fall apart. Ethics in communication signifies that it is the foundation to

acting in good moral standards, which could prevent fights/misunderstanding.

Analysis:

1. How important is Ethics in communicating?

- Ethics is really important in communicating because it gives you a sense of

“respect” in other point of views and when you apply ethics in communication

it make you look more trustworthy and professional to other people.

2. How is considering Politeness, Turntaking, Gender, Race, Social Class,

Age and Disabilities or any of the following results to becoming an Ethical

communicator?

- Considering the things mentioned results to becoming an ethical

communicator because it makes you aware of other perception of things,

makes you more open to receive new information, and gives you a sense of

respect in other point of views.

B. Why is ethical communication everyone ’ s responsibility? Relate your

experience.

- I believe that ethical communication is everyone’s responsibility because it is

critical to making meaningful decisions and thinking responsibly. Also it is our

responsibility to communicate ethically since it helps us to be aware and

sensitive towards different cultures, communities, ideas, and a lot more which

can help improve our image or reputation to the public and avoid

misunderstandings and fake news. My experience that I can relate to ethical

communication is that I was being more thoughtful or mindful of what I share

on my social media, what information I disseminate to my friends and family, I

make sure that it I do not offend any race, gender, culture, communities and a

lot more. It also helped me to think critically and avoid hasty generalization.

Activity:

To further understand how technology impacts communication, let us see

Connected, but Alone? from TEDTalk by Professor Sherry Turkle, who is an

Abby Rockefeller Mauzé Professor of the Social Studies of Science and

Technology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Expound/elaborate these lines by Sherry Turkle :

“We expect more from technology and less from each other.”

- In my own understanding of what the speaker meant by this statement is that,

we have become more dependent on technology with our feelings and

creating relationships and satisfying our fantasies which we cannot do in

reality.

“Our networked life allows us to hide from each other, even as we are tethered

to each other. We’d rather text than talk.”

- This simply means that we hide our true self to others even if you are just

next to each other you’d rather continue clicking on your phone than being

more present to reality, it is because in the fantasies that we create we feel

more connected and comfortable or what I know as fabricated connection.

“We fill our days with ongoing connection, denying ourselves time to think and

dream.”
- We continue with our days connecting with others, thinking that every time,

we should be on trend or up-to date while we tend to forget our whole well

being.

“As we distribute ourselves, we may abandon ourselves.”

- We reinvent ourselves as online personas, with new bodies, houses,

occupations, and romantic relationships. However, we may feel completely

alone in the fading light of virtual community. After hours of interaction, some

people have no sense of having communicated.

“If you’re having a conversation with someone in speech, and it’s not being

tape-recorded, you can change your opinion, but on the Internet, it’s not like

that. On the Internet it ’ s almost as if everything you say were being

tape-recorded. You can’t say, “I changed my mind.”

- What I understand in this statement is that when we talk to one another

personally there is more freedom of speech where you can change your

doings in real-time while on the internet, it is more likely a place full of lawyers

that judge and criticize you for what you do or say. That’s why we need to think

before posting anything on social media or on the world wide web.

Analysis:

1. How can humans use Technology to improve Communication and not

tarnish nor deteriorate it?

- These are some ways that humans can use technology to improve

communication; by being responsible in communicating to others and by using

it as a mode of communication it can either be text based or video, especially in

times like this (pandemic).

2. How can Social Media awareness help improve this generations

understanding on Communication and Technology?

- Individuals and communities previously unreachable have gained access to

knowledge thanks to Social media. It will definitely raise public awareness of

what is going on in other regions of the world and it will definitely help us in

learning new ways on how we can communicate effectively with the use of our

technology.

3. Why is Validating Information in Social Media platforms necessary

nowadays?

- Validating or verifying information in social media platforms is really

necessary, because we need to make sure that we received trusted and

credible data, because every time we click that “share” button there will be

consequences and we would be able to avoid it.

Assessment:

Below are possible situations in Social Media platforms that you might

encounter/ have encountered. Relate how have you/ would you deal with

these scenarios:

How do you deal with…..:

1. …..your classmates ranting another student on Twitter because of his/her

appearance? (Following Ethics and Responsibility in using Social Media).

- I definitely have encountered this type of situation, the way I’ve dealt with this

is by educating my classmate that what she/he did was not okay and it might

bring misery to the person that he/she ranted to. I told her that if they have a

problem with other people especially abut their appearance it is much better to

keep it to themselves to avoid bigger problems.

2. ….your sister posting photos/videos of herself with too little clothing?

(Following Ethics and Responsibility in using Social Media).

- In this generation posting a picture of ourselves with too little clothing is

already being normalized and that you can post if it makes you feel good

about yourself, however, there are a lot of people that can use it against you,

so I would deal with this by telling my sister to avoid posting pictures with too

little clothing or also considered as pornographic/explicit contents because

you never know what might happen and it is for her own safety.

3. …..your brother who is saying bad words while having a video call with his

friend? (Following Ethics and Responsibility in using Social Media).

- The way that I deal with this kind of situation is by telling him to avoid saying

bad words, instead try to find expressive words that are not harmful to others

and discipline him to practice being formal and have respect to other people.

4. …..a relative posing as someone else on Facebook? (Following Validating

Social Media Information).

- Pretending to be someone in social media is not okay, I would deal with this

kind of situation by, first, reporting the account that my relative made and
telling him/her that it can lead to serious problems and you can be arrested by

doing so.

5. …..someone who is using social media in order to cheat on an exam?

(Following Ethics and Responsibility in using Social Media and Validating

Social Media Information).

- Following the ethics and validating information in social media, the way I

would deal with someone cheating online is to tell the student that not

everything you see in the internet could be the answer to your examination

and warn him/her that there are serious consequences in cheating using

social media. I will explain to that person that, teachers will know if you get

your answer online and if you copy and paste it.

6. …..a friend who enjoys chatting with strangers on FB messenger?

(Following Ethics and Responsibility in using Social Media and Validating

Social Media Information).

- Talking with strangers is really risky since you don’t completely know who

are you talking to, so I would deal with this situation by giving a warning to my

friend that he/she shouldn’t give too much information of herself/himself

because it can be used against you or people will probably steal your identity.

7. …..a friend who made a prank on Facebook about the death of his father?

(Following Ethics and Responsibility in using Social Media and Validating

Social Media Information).

- False reporting of death online is considered to be a misinformation and

could be a crime and you could be penalized because of that. The only way

that I can deal with this is to tell my friend to delete the post and apologize to

the people who have seen it.

Include three (3) Social Media cases of abuse, social and racial problems,

hoax, fake news and etcetera that you have experienced and relate how you

settled those issues.

The social media cases of abuse and other things that have happened to me

are; body shaming, almost being scammed, and lastly having someone who

pretends to be me online.

ONLINE BODY SHAMING - we all know that it is a bad thing to do and it may

cause mental harm to other people which would definitely lower their

self-esteem and worse, go through depression. I was able to settle this issue

by talking to those people how I feel when they say words like “you’re getting

fat”, “siopao”, and a lot more, I explained to them that it can bring misery to

one’s mental health and could be a bigger problem, also, I reported the

accounts of those who cannot understand that doing it is a big problem, It is

for my own good, for me to move on and focus on loving myself.

SCAMMING - I was almost got scammed online, I received a comment that

said I won a thousand dollars, thankfully at that time I was in 11th grade and

we already tackled schemes on social media in our subject e-tech, so I was

able to find things that a scammer would do or say and avoid getting

scammed.
CLAIMING MY IDENTITY - I was in 10th grade that time when my friend told

me that I was being rude to her in messenger even though I don’t remember

that we chatted that night, that’s when we found out there was an account

created using my name and some information and behaving negatively on the

internet, luckily my friends teamed up to report the account and the account

was deleted immediately.
