Single phase induction motors (SPIMs) are widely used
motor due to the availability of single phase supply in
virtually every home. SPIMs are small motors, mostly built
in the fractional horsepower range. These motors are
widely Employed for low power applications. In these
applications, the machine runs at constant frequency and
is fed Directly from the alternating current (A.C) grid with
any type of control strategy. SPIMs are used in a wide
Variety of commercial and industrial applications [. These
motors are widely used due to their energy Availability
characteristics .They are commonly used in small rating
where three phase supply is not usually Available . It has
no inherent starting mechanism since it is normally
operated with only one stator winding And therefore some
special arrangements, such as providing an auxiliary
winding in the stator, has to be made For making it self-
starting. It requires just one power phase for its operation
. They are reliable, robust, and Cheap, and are also used
in homes and offices for air conditioners, refrigerators,
washing machines, furnace fans, And garbage disposals.
The auxiliary winding is disconnected from the circuit by
a centrifugal switch as the Rotor attains close to maximum
speed. This motor is associated with some problems like,
not self-starting, Cannot accommodate heavy loads due to
low power factor, it has low starting torque, high starting
current, low Efficiency, which makes for great energy
wastage

INTRODUCTION
Single phase motor is widely used as compared to three
phase motor for domestic purpose, commercial purpose
and to some extent in industrial purpose. As the single
phase motor is more economical and power requirement
in most of the houses, shops, offices are small, they can
work on single phase supply. These motors are simple in
constructions, cheap in cost, reliable and easy to repair
and maintain. Due to all these advantages the single
phase motor finds its application in vacuum cleaner, fans,
washing machine, mixer, blowers, portable drills, sewing
machine, small toys etc.
As the name itself indicates, all single-phase motors are
designed to operate on a single-phase supply. In general,
single-phase motors have less satisfactory operating
characteristics (particularly with regards to efficiency,
starting torque and power factor) as compared to
polyphase motors. However, advances in the design have
made single-phase motors quite satisfactory in their
smaller sizes. As a result, now-a-days, millions of them are
in use in the commercial, agricultural and domestic fields.

FRACTIONAL-HORSEPOWER
MOTOR
A fractional-horsepower motor (FHP) is an electric motor
with a rated output power of less than one horsepower
(745.7 W) (the term 'fractional' indicates less than one
unit). There is no defined minimum output, however, it is
generally accepted that a motor with a frame size of less
than 35mm square can be referred to as a 'micro-motor'.A
fractional horsepower motor is an alternating (AC) or
direct (DC) current motor that produces less than one
horsepower with an output rating of 746 watts or less. The
low power level of fractional horsepower motors makes
them ideal for small electronics and simple consumer
devices. When they are part of a large mechanism, such
as a car, they continue running even if the power to the
device stops. There are many uses for fractional
horsepower motors. Since they produce few vibrations,
they can be used in equipment that requires exceptionally
high precision. Two types of fractional horsepower motors
are stepper and servo motors which allow for a precise
input level. Fractional horsepower motors are widely used
in robotics due to their precision and control.

TYPES OF FHP MOTOR
1.Series Motor
Construction of this motor is same as D.C. motor. It
consists of frame , field core, armature and end plates.
Frame is made up of rolled steel or cast iron. In this,
laminated iron Field core is attached. On this field,
winding is wound. Both Sides of the core has end plates
and between them is armature. This motor works on both
AC and DC supply hence called universal motor. In this
motor main winding is in series with armature. Both field
core and armature core are made up of silicon steel to
reduce iron losses. Carbon brushes are used to avoid
sparking
9
2.Permanent Split Capacitor
This motor has both auxiliary and main winding of
same Size and same number of turns. Here instead of
using centrifugal switch, 2 to 3 uf oil filled paper
capacitor is connected to auxiliary winding. Supply is
given to main winding. Current in main winding is
lagging behind the voltage and current through
auxiliary winding is leading. Due to this ,phase
difference is obtained and torque is produced and rotor
start to rotate.
10
3.Reluctance Motor
A reluctance motor works like a single phase induction
motor with rings at both ends of the motor. Much like all
electric motors, the central components of a reluctance
fractional horsepower motor are its stator and rotor, which
are separated by an air gap. They work with a precision
rotating magnetic field by matching the speed of the rotor
using the magnetic field of the stator. The unique
construction of a reluctance fractional horsepower motor
makes it possible for them to deliver high density power at
a very low cost. The motor concept is based on the
principle that when a magnetic material is in a magnetic
field, it is brought into line in a less reluctance way
12
5.Shaded-Pole Motor
At instant t, current is increasing. The induced emf to
oppose it. Thus flux, opposes it and result them in
unshaded part .At instant to current is almost
constant. Induced emf and flux, are negligible.
Resultant flux is almost at the centre of the pole. Thus
it has shifted its position. At instant t, current is
decreasing. The induced current and flux, try to oppose
this decrease .Hence there is crowding of flux in shaded
part Resultant flux lies in shaded part. Thus it moves
further. This action continues and the resultant field
rotates from unshaded part to shade part. Hence rotor
also rotates in the same direction. The direction of
rotation cannot be reversed unless position of shaded
ring is changed from one part of pole to another part of
pole. Such a motor develops low starting torque and it
has a low power factor. However it is cheaper in cost
and commonly used in practice
14
Application of Split Phase
To drive fans.
In washing machines.
Oil burners.
Smalls machine tools.
Blowers and centrifugal pumps.
Food mixers and grinders, etc
7. Stepper Motor
A stepper fractional horsepower motor is a DC motor that
moves in steps and has multiple coils organized in phases.
When the phases are energized in sequence, the motor
rotates. They are normally chosen for applications that
require precision motion control, such as automation and
robotics
15
8. Synchronous Fractional Horsepower Motor
In a synchronous fractional horsepower motor, the
rotation of the shaft is the same as the applied current.
The total number of rotations the shaft makes is equal to
the current and is the same as the AC cycles. A
synchronous motor has multiple phases AC
electromagnets on the stator that produce a rotating
magnetic field. A permanent magnet is synced with the
rotating magnetic field.
16
capacitors generate constant reactive power whereas
on the other hand synchronous condensers can able
to deliver different reactive power levels by varying the
excitation of machine.
Because of the higher efficiency compared to
induction motors they can be employed for loads
which require constant speeds. Some of the typical
applications of high speed synchronous motors are
such drives as fans, blowers, dc generators, line
shafts, centrifugal pumps, compressors,
reciprocating pumps, rubber and paper mills
Synchronous motors are used to regulate the voltage
at the end of transmission lines
In textile and paper industries synchronous motors
are employed to attain wide range of speeds with
variable frequency drive system

CONCLUSION
From the above topic, we can easily conclude that the
single-phase induction motors are not self-starting
because the produced stator flux is alternating in nature
and at the starting, the two components of this flux cancel
each other and hence there is no net torque The single-
phase induction motor is not started by itself. We require
a starter for starting the motor. When the motor is
connected to a single-phase A.C power supply, the main
winding carries an alternating current. Single phase
induction motors have types according to the way of their
starting. motors are used in equipment and machines that
are smaller in size and require lower horsepower (for
example, one horsepower). This include equipment such
as pumps, refrigerators, fans, compressors, and portable
drills
