Culture Assignment – Scottish Culture

Given the ever-growing diversity of our global cultures, their symbolic traits, and

the values that surround each aspect of cultures continue to grow. To me, culture is a

foundational title defining a group of people in their beliefs, goals, and values that

describe whom each person strives to become and maintain.

In my opinion, combining culture and sociology is significantly important in

merging aspects concerning personal identity, scientific nature, and the public.

Scottish culture is one of the more interesting cultures to examine considering

they are more aged than others. Some material elements of the culture are their love for

sports, the most valued sports to the Scottish are golf and soccer (Scotlandinfo.eu, n.d).

Given their interest in sports, consuming some of their most valuable dishes like haggis

is no stopping point for Scotland’s culture, while also addressing their special occasions

with the dish as well (Scotlandinfo.eu, n.d). The Scottish are known mostly for their

location, their climate, and their ability to be great talkers amongst others in their region.

Throughout the history of Scottish culture, the freedom to read diverse literature,

including various types of poetry, amongst many other writings has been a key factor in

who they are as a society who are bound by their regional difficulties (Countries and

Their Cultures, n.d). When putting the basis for their culture, they enjoy and take great

pride in their many performance arts, like orchestras and ballet, many of which they

have yearly competitions recognizing the popularity of the art (Countries and Their

Cultures, n.d).

Now that some key material aspects of the Scottish culture have been examined, let's

investigate how the Scottish explore non-material behaviours within their culture. Being
3

able to speak and identify within a certain group of power is a symbolic means of their

values and their customs, it’s highly regarded among the better off (Countries and Their

Cultures, n.d). Understandably most people hope to be better off but if anything, like for

example Covid-19 taught us, being different and accepting of our challenges, helps

identify whom we want to become and how we get there, it would be fair to assume that

the Scottish are the same when concerning their desire to live comfortably. Scottish

culture embeds its beliefs and traditions around Christianity, even some music events

are highly recognized as being a part of their religious views and their way of living

(Scotlandinfo.eu, n.d). Region and religion are important in Scottish society, it’s how

they succeed in expanding their beliefs with others and their offspring, considering they

mostly assume women to be the resulting parent in the development of their child’s

growth both physically and academically (Countries and Their Cultures, n.d). Language

in Scottish culture is also a diverse topic, they have a vast population that can fluently

speak and teach Gaelic and they are continually trying to maintain their roots within their

language (Scotlandinfo.eu, n.d).

This culture is very similar to Canadian culture, they have some of the same

religious views, and class tiers for socio-economic foundry and they also exhibit the

same interest in academic, and sports topics although Canada is more of a hockey-

loving nation.

In conclusion, both Canadian culture and Scottish culture, are derived from the

Christianity point of view, whether we want to admit it or not most nations or regions are

typically built upon the ideology of religion, morals, and ethics surrounding them. The

modern-day change is reflective of our continuing development as diverse populations

in comparison to the static state they first grew from.
