Shipping vessels play a significant role in globalization as trading, transportation, and


barter are one of the agents of globalization. Mishra (2018) mentioned that globalization
evolved where sources and goods in a location with an actual need are often produced. The
shipping vessel is a part of a shipping industry that has been its cornerstone, particularly on the
international and interregional trade. During the 21st Century, globalization contributed to
social-economic progress and innovation. The world is continuously changing, and it is never-
ending. Technological advancement and innovations are citizens' coping mechanisms towards
change. Broughel and Thierer (2019), technology and innovation bring benefits; they increase
productivity and improve humanity's overall living standard. Technology is almost
everywhere and is vital for every human interaction. It helps us to do things practical,
effortless, and not time-consuming. The shipping vessel already existed decades ago but is
continuously innovating and adapting to the modernization happening in the world. According
to Cogoport (2020), the shipping vessel is currently having a revolution because the vessel is
exploring and implementing new technology in all aspects of trade and transportation.
During the year 2020, the start of the COVID-19 pandemic became a burden to maritime
students because of the limitations and restrictions that the government mandates to help stop
the spreading virus. One of those restrictions is the utilization of the internet in conducting
classes instead of face-to-face courses. Due to that, the maritime students are experiencing
hardships in acquiring the desired learnings, most especially the required practical skills that
they can use for their future endeavors. Lack of practical skills may lead to the unfamiliarity of
maritime students to their possible working field and the innovations that are continuously
happening in the ships. According to Amo (2019), the rate of productibility is low when
university students do not know enough to perform their practical assessment confidently. To
save time, professors often delegate the task of training to students who have been gifted. But
Introduction many times, these professors aren't given extra time to do so; they still need students to
T-rends complete their own work practically on school. So, they rush through the training, or leave it
I-ssues up to the students to determine the work needed. Furthermore, unskilled students could spend
O-bjectives considerable time seeking help to perform their practical work skills or they could perform
C-ontribution tasks to their understanding, to the detriment of the work process. This could lead to errors and
practical work needing to be repeated or corrected. When more experienced professors spend
time monitoring unskilled students, it detracts from their practical assessment and affects their
production as well.

With that in mind, the researchers came up with a study that intends to address the
problems arising due to lack of practical skills by investigating the level of consciousness of
maritime students to the innovation arising in shipping vessels.

The study would benefit maritime students as it will help them increase their familiarity
with the following technologies and innovations in the shipping vessel. Moreover, the study is
always open for further improvements, and it may serve as data for other researchers who
sought to conduct a study related to the topic. It may also unlock new opportunities and
possibilities of studies for future researchers.

It has been traditionally perceived that the maritime vessel, compared to other
industries, is less permeable to innovation, where only explicitly defined strategy with
centralized and clearly guided managerial leadership would spark some innovative activities
(Jenssen and Randøy, 2002; Jenssen and Randøy, 2006). Nevertheless, the high development
costs and strict industry regulations have been also discouraging companies to innovate
(Doloreux and Malançon, 2008). Nowadays, the industry is undergoing a change, where it is
believed that the demands for increase in efficiency, safety and protection of the environment
can be only achieved by more innovation (Blakely, 2007). In addition, it has been recognized
that to become more innovative, companies need to open up for collaboration with other
maritime organizations and organizations from outside the industry (Jenssen, 2003).
Particularly, strengthening the collaboration between science and businesses is expected to
increase the transfer of advances in research and development (R&D) to the industry, thus
enabling the less costly design, building and operation of ships which are safer and more

study) successful design (AMSA, 2001). The main profilers of competitiveness of single participants
in the industry were associated to some of the traditional competitive priorities like cost
management, quality, delivery, and flexibility (Boyer and Lewis, 2002) and innovative
activities in the industry were adjusted to satisfy those competitive priorities. Influenced by the
industry’s contextual factors (increased demand for ships, focus on the capacity, lack of
regulations, self-centric mentality) the innovation has been incremental and slow. Recent
emergence of another important competitive priority, environmental friendliness is expected to
change the way of how innovation is done in the maritime vessel. It is believed that in order to
boost the competitiveness, the maritime industry needs to augment its competitive priorities
(cost, safety, environment friendliness) by improving the ways the innovation is being created.

This study will serve to know how conscious or aware are the maritime students to the
innovations happens on shipping vessels. A total of 70 respondents are expected to participate
in this study. The target population of the research is the 3 rd year marine engineering students
of Our Lady of Fatima University Valenzuela Campus. In choosing the respondents, a simple
random sampling was used by the researchers. A simple random sample is a subset of a
statistical population in which each member of the subset has an equal probability of being

2020)
