Tutorial Sheet-1 Design of Reinforced Concrete Structures 16th Nov.; 2019

Instructor: Dr. Waseem

2. What are the main objectives of structural design? Distinguish between structural design and structural
analysis?
3. (a) Define characteristic strength. (b) Determine the ‘mean target strength’ required for the mix design of M25
concrete, assuming moderate quality control.
4. Why is the cube strength different from the cylinder strength for the same grade of concrete? Why does the
Code limit the compressive strength of concrete in structural design to 0.67fck, and not fck ?
5. Distinguish between static modulus and dynamic modulus of elasticity of concrete
6. How does the size of the specimen influence the behavior of concrete in uniaxial compression? Discuss the
influence of loading duration on stress-strain behavior of concrete?
7. What does ‘creep of concrete’ mean? Explain the typical strain-time curve? How does creep of concrete affect
the modulus of elasticity?
8. Discuss the salient features of working stress method and ultimate load method?
9. What is meant by limit state? Discuss the different ‘limit states’ to be considered in reinforced concrete
design. What are the merits of limit state design philosophy over other design philosophies? Explain the basis
for the selection of partial load and safety factors by the Code for ‘ultimate and serviceability limit states’.
10. Describe the moment-curvature relationship for reinforced concrete beams. What are the possible modes of
failure?
11. What is effective flange width? What are the various factors that influence that influence the effective flange
width in a T-Beam?
12. Why is the partial safety factor for concrete (γc) greater than that for reinforcing steel (γs) in the consideration
of ultimate limit states? Why is it that γc is applicable at all stress levels whereas γs is applicable only near the
‘yield stress’ level?
13. What is the fundamental assumption in flexural theory? Is it valid at the ultimate state? Justify the assumption
that concrete resists no flexural tensile stress in reinforced concrete beams. Derive the stress block
parameters for a rectangular cross-section?
14. Why is it undesirable to design over-reinforced sections? Justify the Code specification for the limiting neutral
axis depth in LSM.
15. “The ultimate moment of resistance of a singly reinforced beam section can be calculated either in terms of
the concrete compressive strength or the steel tensile strength”. Is this statement justified in all cases?
16. Explain how the neutral axis is located in T-Beam sections (at the ultimate limit state), given that it lies outside
the flange.
17. A tee beam of effective flange width 1200 mm, thickness of slab 100 mm, width of rib 300 mm and effective
depth of 560 mm is reinforced with 4 no. of 25 mm diameter bars? Calculate the factored moment of
resistance. The materials are M20 grade concrete and HYSD reinforcement of grade Fe-415?
Find the ultimate moment of resistance for the same beam, if it is reinforced with (a) 5 no. of 25 mm diameter
bars and (b) 6 no. of 25 mm diameter bars?
18. A rectangular beam 250 mm wide and having an effective depth of 310 mm is reinforced with 3 no. of 12 mm
diameter bars. Find out the ultimate moment of resistance of the beam? The materials are M20 grade
concrete and (a) Fe-250 steel (b) Fe-415 steel (c) Fe-500 steel and (d) Fe-550 steel?
