as a pastoral challenges we are facing, particularly priority which takes into account the
growth and developments of our Archdiocese, and the different pastoral challenges we

CHAPTER THREE

3.0 Working Practical Experience

During the internship period, the intern was assigned to the IT Department at the
University of Saint Joseph Mbarara. The IT department is responsible for making sure the
systems of the University of Saint Joseph Mbarara are functioning in the right way and
that all computers are in good working conditions. It is responsible for user
administration, system maintenance, Verify that peripherals are working properly
including the network cables and servers, Quickly arrange repair for hardware in
occasion of hardware failure Monitor system performance, Creation of file systems,
Installation software, Create a backup and recovery policy, Monitor network
communication, Update system as soon as new version of OS and application software
comes out, Implement the policies for the use of the computer system and network, Setup
security policies for users, Password and identity management among others.

The main duty was to assist the systems administrators with implementation of the goals
of the department, which included various tasks depending on the daily activities like
database management where I was assigned a task of creating emails, email groups, and
also group the student emails into the email groups that I created, computer maintenance
software installation where I was tasked by the supervisor to open a computer clean the
mother board and also install windows 10 operating system. The major aim was to reduce
the work load of the IT department so as to meet the deadlines as assigned by the USJM
administrators.

3.1 Projects carried out

While at University of Saint Joseph Mbarara, I was assigned different tasks. These
included installation of operating system, installing office, entering data, terminating
cables and so on.
3.2 Supervisory works done.
While at the University of Saint Joseph Mbarara, I was given a chance to train my
student on how to install windows operating system plus installing office 2016 on
University computers.

3.3 Problems encountered

While at that is University of Saint Joseph Mbarara I faced a few challenges and these
included. Network problem which brought about delay in downloading the operating
system, I also faced the problem of incompatibility of the operating system in some of the
computers. Also there was a problem of slow internet in sending an email to the
university supervisor during biodata collection.

3.4 Problems solved

For poor termination I used a clipping tool gently not to cut or injure cables inside the shell,
color code mismatch I learnt the code alignments from brown to white-brown, to green, to white-
blue, to blue, to white-green, to orange then finally to white orange (for a straight through cable),
inappropriate connection I just troubleshoot connection of devices, configuration failure I
reconfigured the devices, poor connection of Ethernet cables I trouble shoot for this and noted
some cable was out the I just inserted it back, no power in the dish this was due to a fault POE I
switched to a properly working POE, point to point failure I powered the second dish then
aligned it point to point to each other, then feeding the access point dish with internet and
inappropriate connection in the POE ports this was due to unclear labelling of the POE ports
therefore I just swapped cables in it to power the dish and also to feed it with internet from
router.
CHAPTER FOUR

4.0 Summary
This chapter consists of the experiences gained, new skills and knowledge learnt, the
link to the community and university taught courses, benefits and the challenges faced as
a result of being part of the University of Saint Joseph Mbarara as an intern. It also
consists of a general conclusion and recommendation about the internship.

4.1 Types of experiences gained

While at that is University of Saint Joseph Mbarara, I gained a lot of experiences in
system administration as a result of working with the IT department. Such experiences
helped I to see practically how the different components as taught in class, work in real
life. Some of the experiences include.

Networking experiences where I was also tasked to terminate RJ45 cables with the
supervision of the organizational supervisor. This was due to network problems which
included failure to connect to the internet by all the organization computers.

I also used computer applications while at the organization thus gaining soft skills. These
computer applications included installing windows operating system on University
computers.
I also participated in the training of my fellow student on how to install operating
system and office 2016 with the knowledge I acquired from the company supervisor.

4.2 New Skills and Knowledge learnt.

While at the industrial training organization, I was able to gain new skills and
knowledge as a result of being part of the IT department of the organization. The skills
gained include teamwork. In class every student would attempt questions and do
individual assignments while the IT department at the University of Saint Joseph Mbarara
perform tasks as a team therefore the internee gained the experience of working as a
team.

Teamwork is an essential aspect of everyone to be successful at work place so it helped the internee to
prepare for future work relations with others.
I also gained technical skills. These included troubleshooting and finding out the issues
with the network. And also connecting the switch thereby improving on my knowledge.

In addition the internee also gained skills of entering data into the computer while being guided by the
company supervisor. The internee excel spread sheet as he was entering data assigned to him as shown
in the figure below.
4.3 Link to Community and University Taught Courses
Most of the taught courses are extremely related with what is practiced at the internship
organization such as computer maintenance and troubleshooting and other core courses
such as system administration, networking and security basics which were taught in the
first year second semester.

Most activities that were performed while at USJM necessitated me to have a wider
theoretical understanding of what was usually taught in the class. As most of the
activities involved application of the knowledge that was learnt in class at some point.

I was able to communicate effectively to the students that he was assigned to at the
internship organization. This was as a result of applying the communication skills that
was theoretically taught in class in first year first semester.

4.4 Benefits derived from the Industrial Training Program

The industrial training program was of great importance to the trainee. This is because I
gained a lot as a result of the industrial training program. some of the benefits include;
Internship helped I understand work ethics that is how the staff conduct themselves while
at the work place including the dos and don’ts of the organization, responsibilities and
opportunities. Industrial training program at the University of Saint Joseph Mbarara also
offered career direction and confidence in my abilities by shortening the list of potential
careers. The internship program gave me an opportunity to try out computer related
activities. That is installation of the operating systems most especially windows operating
system and other computer software which I had not previously considered and
broadened my limit through converting the academic knowledge into industry skills. It
also prepared me for the working environment by heightening my CV needed to
negotiate future jobs.

4.5 Challenges Faced During the Industrial Training.

Network problem. This greatly interrupted the activities mostly those which need
interaction with the internet such as downloading operating system and office 2016.
Interruptions of the training processes. This was also a challenge at the University of
Saint Joseph Mbarara as the organization supervisor was at times taken up by other
different duties thereby having less time to continue with the training process. This was
as a result less IT personnel in the organization.

4.6 Recommendations

4.6.1To Students.
I urge the students to take the opportunity to do internship as it will help them identify
their weak spots, capabilities and potentials.

The students should be prepared before going to internship. The students should put in
more effort to find out what IT related duties are performed by an organization in order to
ease writing of the report.

4.6.2 To the industrial training Organization (University of Saint Joseph Mbarara).

I do appreciate the time and opportunity given to us as students as far as industrial
training is concerned, however there is need to review in ways in which industrial
training is handled and address some of the challenges by the university as the internship
organization.

The university should consider scheduling time for internship students to help them be
equipped with learning materials for proper efficiency and effectiveness. The university
should also improve on motivation of both its employees and internship students for
better results and delivery.

4.6.3. To the University.

Great thanks go to the lecturers of the University of Saint Joseph Mbarara for the great
work done and commitment to give students quality and excellent education by providing
students with relevant knowledge and skills to prepare them with for the working
environment and life outside class that is through industrial training experiences.
However, some areas need to be improved in order for the university to produce excellent
and highly skilled qualified students for instance internship period should be extended in
order to allow the interns to access the all-necessary information at the work place.

4.7 Conclusion
Generally, internship was an excellent program as it helped enhance and develop skills as
well as my abilities and knowledge. This was through the experiences gained both as a
result of interacting with the different staff who are more experienced in the field than
me. The experience was great because I was able to learn different skills, get a hands-on
experience, use different organizational systems and above all work as a team.
