The windows movie maker consist of 3 main areas:

1. The Panes ares


2. The storyboard/ timeline area
3. Preview monitor area
1. The Panes area
It has 3 different panes.
i) The task pane
It lists the common tasks that may be needed while making a movie.
a) Importing files
b) Editing the movie
c) Publishing the movie
ii) The collection pane
It displays a collection folder that contains clips such as
a) Effects
b) Transitions
c) Imported media
All the clips that are selected are displayed in the content pane
iii) The content pane
It shows the clips, effects of transitions that are working with while creating the movies
We can drag clips, transitions or effects from the content pane or a collection of clips from the collection
pane to the storyboard/ timeline area. It can also be dragged to the preview monitor to play them.
If you make any changes to the clips they are only reflected in the current project and they do not affect the
source file.
2. Storyboard/ timeline.
This is the area where the project is created and edited. It has 2 views (the storyboard and the timeline).
We can switch between the views while making a movie.
i) Storyboard.
It is the default view of the WMM. We can use this view to see the sequence or ordering of clips in the
project and easily rearrange them. It can also let us see the video effects or transitions that are added to the
movie. Any audio clips that are added to the project are not displayed in the storyboard.
ii) Timeline.
It provides a more detailed view of the movie project. It allows make finer edits such as
a) Trim video clips, adjust the duration of transitions between clips and view the audio track
b) Review or modify the timing of clips, zoom in and out of the project, adjust audio levels
3. Preview monitor.
It enables you to view individual clips or entire projects. It can be used to preview the project before
publishing it as a movie. The buttons below the preview monitor allow you to play, pause, advance or
rewind a clip frame by frame. The split button allows you to split a clip into two parts. The preview
monitor can be made larger or smaller.
