2 Recordable Indications:
7.2.1 Flat Bottom Hole Technique:
7.2.1.1 Record indications equal to or exceeding 100% of the reference amplitude
specified in 7.3.1. Record two or more indications separated by ½ in. (12
mm) or less.
7.2.2 Angle Beam Technique:
7.2.2.1
Record indications equal to or exceeding 50% of the distance amplitude
curve (DAC) produced from the reference notches.
7.3 Acceptance/Rejection criteria per API 6A (bar) and API 5CT (OCTG):
7.3.1 Flat bottom hole technique: Single indications exceeding reference distance
amplitude curve (DAC) or multiple indications exceeding 50% of reference DAC
shall be rejected. Multiple indications are defined as two or more indications within
13 mm (1/2 in.) of each other in any direction.
7.3.1.1 Distance amplitude curve (DAC) shall be generated, the following hole
sizes apply based on the metal thickness:
Metal thickness Flat-bottom hole size
< 1.5 in. (38 mm) 1/16 in. (1.6 mm)
1.5 - 6 in (38 - 150 mm) 1/8 in. (3.2 mm)
> 6 in. (150 mm) 1/4 in. (6.4 mm)
7.3.2 Back Reflection technique: indications greater than 50% of the referenced back
reflection accompanied by a complete loss of back reflection shall be rejected.
7.3.3 Angle Beam Technique: Indications equal to or larger than the response from the
reference notch shall be rejected. The reference notch depth shall follow the
Acceptance level per API 5CT, Table E.44:
Acceptance Notch Depth Notch Length Notch Width
Level max. max. at full depth max.
% in. in.
L1 2 2.0 0.040
L2 5 2.0 0.040
L3 10 2.0 0.040
L4 12.5 2.0 0.040
Depth as a percent of specified wall thickness. The depth tolerance shall be ± 15% of the
calculated notch depth, with a minimum notch depth of 0.0012 in ± 0.002 in.
If not specified, the L4 acceptance level shall be used as minimum acceptance criteria.
7.3.4 Materials with rejectable indications that are to be removed by a subsequent
operation are acceptable only if additional examinations prove that all of the defects
are completely removed.
