STRESSES
DME (1ME2501)

Q-1 State the fundamental equation of Twisting moment with notation. List Machine elements subjected
to Twisting moment or torque.

Q-2 Give Difference between shaft, Spindle and Axle.

Q-3 Give classification or types of keys with sketch.

Q-4 Give classification of coupling. Also explain application and purpose of coupling.

Q-5 Explain types of shaft with application and function.

P1. A muff coupling transmits 75 kW at 200 rpm. Determine the diameter of the muff. Permissible shear
stress for the shaft and Muff [τ] = 50 N/mm2

P2. Determine the Bolt diameter for the four bolts used for the flange coupling transmitting 70 KW at 250
rpm. Pitch circle diameter for the bolt is 200 mm. Permissible stress for Bolt is 30 MPa. Maximum torque
is 25% higher than the full load torque.

P3. A protected type of flange coupling transmits 40 kw power at 450 RPM. Determine the following. (a)
Shaft diameter (b) number of bolts (c) diameter of the bolt permissible shear stress [τ] is for the bolt and
the shaft are 30 MPa and 65 MPa respectively.

P4. Helical spring is attached to a plunger of an engine indicator. Plunger diameter is 20 mm and the
steam the pressure acting on the plunger is 5 N/mm2. The spring is compressed by 12 mm. If the
permissible shear stress [τ] for the spring wire is 550 N/mm2 and the spring index is 3, determine the
following dimensions for the spring. (a) Spring wire diameter (b) mean diameter of the coil (c ) Number
of active coils. Take G = 83 KN/mm2.

P5. Helical compression spring sustains the load of 500 Newton with the deflection of 25 mm. spring
index is 6 and allowable shear stress [τ] is 350 N/mm2. Determine spring wire diameter, mean diameter
of coil, and active number of coils. Take G=0.84 x 105 N/mm2

P6. Helical spring is subjected to axial load in the range from 2100 N to 3250 N for the deflection of 5
mm. Spring wire diameter is 10 mm and spring index is 5. Find the active number of coils and maximum
shear stresses induced in the spring. Take G=0.84 x 105 N/mm2
