Q. 2 (B)
IU SUMMARY WRITING (3 marks)

EN
Summary means a representation of a prose passage in the shortest possible form. A summary
should have one-third (1/3) the number of words in the original passage. For writing a good summary,
it is very important to understand the original passage thoroughly. The process of summary writing
consists of comprehension, selection and clear and concise expression.

’ G
In order to understand the passage, you have to keep in mind that every piece of composition
has a subject, a purpose and tone. The subject emerges from the information, experience and

ES
imagination of the writer. It is necessary to identify the topic, purpose and tone of the text. Find out
key ideas of the passage.

B
* Steps for writing a ‘Summary’ :

S H
In order to write a good summary, you have to go step by step. You have to read the passage, understand

C
it properly and extract the essence to put it in your own words - you have to make a rough and then the

passage.

GE
Arrange the ideas or points thus marked out or make a list of important ideas you have noted in the

The logical chain of thoughts in the original passage should not be broken, i.e. the order of ideas in

S’
the given passage may generally be preserved in the summary to have an organic plan, a clear unbroken
sequence of ideas.
6.

7.
E
The summary should be written as far as possible in your own words. Write short and simple sentences.
A key - word or an important phrase may have to be used but the sentences should be your own.

B
There should be no repetition of the same idea and do not add your comments or thoughts because

8.
9.
S
summary is not an essay. Your ideas should be connected to the ideas found in the original.

S
Read the passage again to see whether you have left out anything important.
The summary should be written in the third-person, even if the original is in the first - person or in the
form of a dialogue.
10. Direct form of narration, questions and exclaimations should not form a part of summary. All of
them should be transformed into statements, (if required).
11. Bearing these points, check your rough draft; read it and see whether it is clear and coherent.
12. Check up the length of your summary. If it is longer than required, condense it again. Ten words more
or less than the required number will not be considered a serious lapse.
A work by Department of English, SSBES’ Genius Batch 1
13. When you are satisfied that the draft is of the proper length and written in the clearest and most
coherent manner possible, copy it out neatly for submission as a final - draft. It should be 1/3 of the
original passage.

Only during the last few decades society has slowly come to acknowledge its responsibilities and to

BA
recognize that handicapped people can be trained to play a useful part in economic as well as social
life. The second world war gave importance to this. During the 1939-45 war, pressure on resources
of labour compelled all fighting nations to call on the services of handicapped people for tasks

be able to use his hands with skill. Another person might have lost his sight, but still be capable of

In recent years, scientific inventions and discoveries have lessened the disabilities of deafness, some

S “Mind-Mapping” (03)

S
A Mind Map is the representation of information in graphical form especially in the form of a diagram.
It is hierarchical (i.e. ranking classes, terms, etc. one above the other according to importance or
status) and shows the relationships among the various elements. Mind-mapping is a very useful way
of transmitting information into and out of your brain. This process actually ‘maps out’ your ideas
quite naturally and in a way that suits your inherent personal method of doing things.
Points to be remembered while making a mind map :
1. Let the ideas first come out at random just as they keep on popping up in your mind. Reorganize
them later.
2. The main idea is crystallized in the centre and radiates from there as branches.
3. Derived ideas of lesser importance form ‘twigs’:

Ans. Honorable Judges, respected teachers and my dear friends, a very good afternoon to you all. Today, I,
XYZ, am going to talk on “Children in Advertisements - blessing or curse.”
Today, I stand before you to share with you my views on all those advertisements which use
children to target other children for marketing their products.
I feel the advertisers are exploiting the children for luring them either to buy the product or
pester their parents to choose that product. Children get easily influenced, sometimes by celebrities
or sometimes by children of their age-group.

But friends, don’t you agree with me when I say, children are innocent victims who are misused
by the advertisers with vested interest? Inspite of repeated warnings, children try to imitate the daredevil
acts of trained models and that might prove fatal for them. Too much consumption of junk food like
chips, burgers etc. cause obesity to children. And last but not the least, due to rat race, children pester
parents to buy goods causing unneccesary expenditure for the family.

The proverb means that success in life may be achieved by even ordinary people by perseverance,
steadiness and hard work. As in a well known story of a famous two friends tortoise and rabbit in
which the earlier who won the race by walking slowly, bravely and steadily and left the fast moving
rabbit behind him. It means that no work or task can be done easily. The Rome had taken many years
even centuries to stand. In the same way all the great achievements take more time to complete. One
who never does any work in hurry always enjoys the fruits of one’s efforts.
A work by Department of English, SSBES’ Genius Batch 17
The Taj Mahal one of the greatest wonders in the world was not built in a day. People who were
involved had to put great efforts to build it. The same is applied with each and everything we do or
expect. One must have patience and efforts to complete or achieve one’s goal. The above quoted
proverb itself gives a message that doing important work needs time and patience. Whatever we do we
must have the ability to have patience which needs a lot of efforts. Having patience is not enough we
should have positive thinking also. Any tree which gets sweet fruits don’t come in an easy way. We

H
should wait to enjoy it’s fruits unless it is nurtured or grown up well. We should remember slow and
steady wins the race.

(2) A bad workman always blames his tools

TC
The meaning of this proverb is success doesn’t depend on what kind of tools we have but depends on

BA
how we use them. A person may have all the equipment in the world but if he doesn’t know how to use
them then he can never complete a job successfully. A person who can make effective use of whatever
he has with him can give a successful result of any work which has been provided to him.

US
The same can be said of real life situations too. We must learn to use our talents or skills as per the
work or task which has been provided to us. We should not blame situations or destiny when something

NI
goes wrong. Inspite of having better quality equipment some people are not able to get or finish given
task to them. It might be this because of their laziness or lack of interest in completing the particular
task.

E
As time passes they have excuses ready to explain and later on they blame the situation and tools for
their loss.
