TITLE: THE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF USING THE WEB-

CONFERENCING APP FOR PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS.

I. CONTEXT AND RATIONALE

Online learning is one of the imminent trends in the education sector around the

globe. This mode of learning is done through the internet. With advanced and upgraded

technologies, this mode of learning has been made simpler. As the COVID-19 Pandemic

strikes the globe, numerous schools shift from Face-to-Face to Online Learning. Teachers

and Pupils were forced to adjust to a New Normal way of learning. The Teaching and

Learning Process, Teachings Strategies and mode of Communication has been changed.

Teachers were forced to change their medium of Teaching through Web conferencing.

Through the changes of Medium of teaching, The first Batch of K-12 Curriculum Bachelor

of Elementary Education Pre-service Teachers studied at Notre Dame of Tacurong College

were also forced to adjust themselves with the New Normal situation. They have to adapt

and learn how to use web conferencing applications since it is the only way to teach Pupils

with this present situation.

The adoption of e-conferencing has seen a huge increase in conducting business

globally and technologically mediated interactions are now the order of the day—the new

normal. The virtualization of meetings promotes collaboration among colleagues, target

markets, associates, teachers, and students working towards the organization’s objectives.

Using web conferencing in learning meets the primary goal of both educators and students.

It facilitates the creation of the best learning environment for students and aids in the

realization of a balance between life and teaching duties for educators. Through web

conferencing, higher learning institutions have the ability to capitalize on the available

technologies to expand access to instructors online while also creating new experiences in

the teaching and learning environment (Adipat, 2021). However, according to Bonk et al.

(2016), web conferencing improves the level of understanding between those involved in

the communication process, similar to a one-on-one scenario. Humans have a low auditory

recognition memory performance; however, they possess high visual recognition memory

(Bonk et al., 2016). Therefore, web conferencing taps into both the weakness of auditory

and the strength of visual memory to ensure effective and efficient communication

outcomes are attained.

Despite all this, According to Gegenfurtner et al. (2020), students’ ability to use

new software plays a role in limiting their preference in adopting new technologies. It is

undeniable that some teachers and students struggle with and resist technology due to its

complexities (Collis and Moonen, 2008). Additionally, Internet connections can be

interrupted, which causes disruptions in online classes, thus, reducing effectiveness and

damaging the flow of useful information. With all of these Advantages and Disadvantages

Brought by using Web Conferencing in Online Learning. This Research aims to know

How proficient and skilled Pre-service teachers in terms of manipulating Web-

Conferencing apps as a medium of Teaching. This also aims to know if the Pre-service

Teachers are experiencing similar problems and certainty during virtual class using the

web-conferencing application. Moreover, This Research aims to find out the disadvantages

and advantages of web-conferencing to allow pre-service teachers to improve their

understanding of the Pros and cons in utilizing web conferencing in online classrooms. In

addition, this will help Pre-service teachers to figure out how to resolve those

disadvantages and to preserve and develop the advantages brought by utilizing web

conferencing.

II. ACTION RESEARCH QUESTION

This rapid growing technology not only allows people to connect in real time through

audio and video but also makes sharing of documents and files live over the internet

easier. Many educators have utilized this technology to teach and share live

experiences with students through direct video streaming.

That helps connect teachers and students from different locations at the same time

without the need for the parties to be physically present. However, video conferencing

comes with a share of its own challenges or disadvantages. The benefits of video

conferencing technology may be great but its setbacks may just be enough to

disappoint users who depend on it on a daily basis.

The first factor is

1. How skilled are the Pre-service Teachers to operate web conferencing as an

educational tool? Secondly,

2. What are the difficulties faced by the Pre-service teachers in using the Web-

conferencing App?Finally,

3. Are students and teachers motivated to use the

Technology?

Using new technologies, among students and teachers, can be determined by

examining self-efficacy. Self-efficacy, an integral construct of social psychology, is the

belief in one’s ability to carry out an activity. It is largely informed by the cognitive

theory that humans learn by observing and imitating others (Bandura, 1986) Measuring

self-efficacy entails component expertise, such as the use of the Internet or special

computer skills, and determines students’ judgment ability to utilize their digital

literacy skills to perform overall educational tasks.  Compeau and Higgins (1995)

III. PROPOSED INNOVATION, INTERVENTION, AND STRATEGY

A good internet connection is crucial to avoid technical glitches in video

conferences. Generally speaking, lower upload speeds negatively impact the quality of

virtual meetings. Speed doesn't guarantee that you won’t encounter any problems with

video conferencing. Consistency of network, concurrent downloads, and other factors

could also impact the quality of the call. There are three core functions of web

conferencing software: audio, video, and screen sharing. Unfamiliar tools can be

daunting the first time someone uses them. The best way to avoid this common video

conferencing problem is by using a platform that makes it easy for guests to join

meetings. Next, the best way to avoid problems with online meetings related to internet

bandwidth is to make sure you’re getting appropriate speeds. Run speed tests to make

sure that your internet is performing as it should. 

Introducing technology to teachers tends to be the first and “easiest” step. However,

when new technology is provided and teachers do not understand how to use it

effectively, they are bound to be skeptical of its potential to improve their instruction.

The pandemic has altered how teachers instruct and how they connect with their

students. More can be done to systematically cultivate the integration of technology

into their instruction. We have a unique opportunity to rethink the role of teachers not

just what technology can do for teachers or their current skill set, but how the

experience of interacting with the technology motivates them and their students.

IV. ACTION RESEARCH METHODS

a. Participants and/or other Sources of Data and Information

The Respondents of this study are the Pre-Service Teachers of Notre Dame of

Tacurong College, for the academic year 2021-2022. And, 10 random pupils from

grade 1 to grade 6 of Notre Dame of Tacurong College, Grade School

Department.

b. Data Gathering Method

The researcher asked permission from the Office of Dean of the College of Arts &

Sciences and Education (CASED) of Notre Dame of Tacurong College (NDTC) to conduct

the study and another letter of permission was also given to the Office of the Program

Head of Education of Notre Dame of Tacurong College to conduct the study. Upon

approval of the letter of permission from concerned school officials, the researcher directly

conducted the study through a survey questionnaire. Since COVID-19 pandemic requires

everyone to observe health and safety protocol, the researcher sought assistance from the

Bachelor of Elementary Education Supervising Teacher for the distribution and collection

of the survey through the Bachelor of Elementary Education Group Chats.

c. Data Analysis Plan

To analyze the data on how skilled the Pre-service Teachers to operate web conferencing

as an educational tool, the top three items that got high mean ratings and the item that got

the two lowest mean were focused in the discussion and interpretation of findings. To

describe the prevalence of how skilled the Pre-service Teachers, the researchers used the

following ranges of means with corresponding description.

To analyze the data on the difficulties faced by the Pre-service teacher in using the web

conferencing App, the top three items that got high mean ratings and the item that got the

VI. PLANS FOR DISSEMINATION AND UTILIZATION

Plans for Dissemination and Utilization

The Result of the research will be presented to the Pre-service Teachers and

Cooperating Teachers of Grade School Department through virtual conference via zoom.

This avenue will be employed to enable Pre-service Teachers and Cooperating Teachers to

share insight about the current research results, and to recommend future actions beneficial

for Pre-service Teachers. This study ensures that the Research findings will be used to help

future Pre-service Teachers to perceive the advantages and disadvantages of using Web

Conferencing as Medium of teaching for Grade school Pupils in online learning.

VII. REFLECTION

As Pre-Service Teacher researchers, It is our first time to conduct and create this action

research plan. At first, We don't have any idea what Action Research means, but with the

help of a webinar about Action research conducted via zoom, by the Holy Trinity College,

We learned a little bit of knowledge about what Action research means. We learned that

this action research emphasizes study and action in which researchers need a plan for a

solution to a problem inside the classroom. Acknowledge and answer the concerns

encountered by the teachers and the pupils.

Our journey making this research is somehow challenging because aside from making This

Action research Plan, we still have different task and Responsibilities to do as Pre service

Teachers, but because of the teamwork and partnership we created as a group, It became

easy. As a Group, we helped each other, we shared our ideas, thoughts and Opinions about

our experiences as Pre service Teachers in using web Conferencing app both Positive and

Negative.

Furthermore, This action research will be beneficial for us as future teachers, most

especially for the future Pre service Teachers, because they will become enlightened about

the advantages and disadvantages of Using Web conferencing apps. Somehow, we felt

unfortunate that we were the first batch of Pre service Teachers to create an action

research, but we are still lucky because in the near future we can use this as we go along in

our chosen profession.
