Final Reflection

Rhetoric choices entail using words that influence the audience during an essay's writing.

Some of the most effective rhetorical choices are logos, pathos, and ethos. When we incorporate

the use of rhetoric-influenced phrases, we include ways to motivate, inform, and persuade.

Pathos uses tools that engage emotions, such as advertisements and the call for donations

through charity. Logos uses logic and reason, where arguments are made using logical reasoning

and evidence. Ethos describes the reputation of the writer.

I only used logos and ethos in my three essays in presenting my facts. I used logos in all

three essays to portray my relevant ideas. I cited my evidence in MLA style. For instance, in

essay one, regarding the various genres of music performance in the gym, according to Thakare

et a. 23, “music triggers a range of feelings in humans like it regulates mood, captures attention,

induces…” essay 2 and 3 also has evidence in MLA. All the evidence is shown on the works

cited page in all the essays. In essay 2, the relationship between mobile phones and loneliness is

very logical due to its harmful effects on lonely people. I used many peer-reviewed articles that

clicked with this specific topic of technology addiction that makes people lonelier, as there was

much research on this. Essay 2 demonstrates the use of ethos in various instances. I used various

examples to show the detriments of using smartphones. For instance, nomophobia is a socio-

psychological disorder affecting smartphone users of fear of not having such devices. I

demonstrated ethos in all essays using counterarguments and correct grammar and syntax. The

arguments are reputable and have a flow. Professor Briones has given us an assignment that

entitles us to put what we have learned so far with these rhetoric strategies into use. We will be

combining all of our essays into a website for all to view. With this, we will see how well our

comprehension of syntax will blend with our website, as we have to appeal to the viewer with

images, content, and media. The website may have been challenging; nevertheless, it was a

success, and I feel it was a very well-done project.

When making a website, it is essential for somebody to include the use of rhetorical

language in order to get the most out of your website. Not only does it incorporate the way the

website’s author thinks and feels, but it also gets to establish a connection with the reader. Visual

Rhetoric played a significant role in how my website has been outlined. I made sure to have a

connecting picture for every essay I included. This made the readings appear better organized

and added a touch of neatness to the website. As you first enter my website, I have included the

image of a thunderstorm as my opening image that depicts my mental process. This goes to show

that my mind is constantly brewing with ideas, but as soon as I seem to put the idea together,

STRIKE! This use of pathos builds the idea of how my ideas come into reality; behold, you get a

glimpse of my mind. For my three essays, I have included not necessarily an abstract but a little

summary of what you can expect to read in each essay. This will give the reader a sense of

giving the author a sense of reputation; therefore, the incorporation of ethos was incorporated.

Putting all of this into practice was essential when developing my essays and doing constant

reviews throughout our class this year. This year my topics were interesting and helped me

curate them as I enjoyed writing about a topic that I found interesting. The concepts of

technology, music, and loneliness are more scientific and logical. The choice of rhetorical

choices was very tedious for me. I chose Lagos and ethos because they fit nicely in my analysis.

I did not choose pathos because this is not an emotional topic but a topic that demonstrates the

use of logic and facts to make up its conclusions. The most crucial aspect of creating a portfolio

is to identify the audience. To address the concepts of music ad technology, I implemented

scientific writing with evidence of experimentation and research in reputable journals and

research. The evidence is factual and rational. Pathos uses persuasive language, which made me

eliminate it since it does not align with scientific writing. I spent time jotting down a few notes

and made annotations that were relevant to my work. I also analyzed information from recent

articles that were peer-reviewed to enhance my research skills and provide content. I also sought

information from the library and brainstormed the topic with my colleagues to ensure I had

appropriate rhetoric choices for my work.

The concept of rhetoric choices stood out for me in ENGL 1302. It was a stepping stone

in learning the importance of rhetoric choices in the different forms of writing. The essays were a

form of scientific writing, and I learned to exclude pathos in science since it sounds vague in this

context. Countless research that I did helped me tremendously as I knew exactly how to put these

rhetorical strategies to use in my essays. Everything that I read and tried to tie in with my topic

was thankfully working, as we had to get the articles and create abstracts for them to help us

when referring back to the abstract sheet. This course has sharpened my vocabulary skills and

communication. My professor identified some mistakes in the writing style in MLA format, and

my concept of formatting styles changed immensely after this course. I would change my

formatting style after understanding how to insert in-text citations appropriately. Most mistakes

were due to proofreading, grammar, and syntax of reading, syntax errors. Following the three

essays, everything changed in my writing capacity. I am in check and can potentially be a good

writer for the years to come. It has also improved my thinking capacity following the choice of
Ortiz 4

my rhetoric since it was tedious work for me since I needed to learn more about how to use

rhetoric properly. My essay writing expertise has improved, which is an equitable skill I will use

in other courses. From the choice of my topics and essays, I am now conscious and conversant

about the relationship between loneliness and technology and the various music genres relevant

to the gym. All these were topics I felt connected to; therefore, writing these was like providing

an insight into what I feel. With the completion of this website, not only will I have done a

website for the first time, but it will help me guide myself in the future to see how my writing

progresses over the upcoming years.

I learned that the choice of rhetoric depends on the assignment. Rhetoric is used

differently depending on the relevance of the assignment. This work took me a lot of time due to

procrastination and lack of focus. I want to change my attitude and mode of doing my work. My

essays had a few errors, and I will try to avoid making these mistakes in any other course. Time

management was a significant issue in this course; I realized I did waste much time and did my

assignment during rush hours. Most of the time, I wanted to avoid thinking since I felt tiresome;

however, this assignment engaged a lot of thinking, and I did not want to convey such an attitude

in the future. I found learning new things exciting, and that kept me going. For instance,

implementing new vocabulary gave me passion and a craving for more in my writing. Learning

about current information was my strength, and it pushed me into more research and expanded

my perspective on various aspects. Engaging in group discussions allowed me to present ideas I

thought would not be good in the essay I was working on. This gave me a sense of confidence, as

well as my peers in the same group. One of my weaknesses is reading long texts. It killed my

ability to understand and digest the knowledge. I could sometimes daydream for no reason since

I don't particularly appreciate reading long texts. Despite being focused on my course, sometimes

I lost my motivation and wanted to give up. Maintaining a routine was a challenging task for me.

I wanted to do more, but I would sometimes lose my train of thought. Writing these essays

involved a lot of research and sometimes even translation when it came to foreign peer review

articles. It was a tough semester; nevertheless, I'm happy I took this course as it will open a

gateway for me to start fully connecting my mind with paper. It was a weakness I had a lot of

trouble controlling, and I would like to seek help to solve it in the future.

Designing a good website is a tedious process, and it is not easy as it looks. A website

was a task that I found to be very time-consuming and had fun doing simultaneously. Coming up

with an ideal stack that suits my website was very frustrating. A tech stack consists of the

programming languages, a framework, and the tool each web designer must have to develop a

website. The creation of the site was complex as there were many things that had to be

incorporated within site to give it a good look and so that it could function as it should. The most

challenging part was placing certain technical things that had to be put for the spacing and

formatting of the page. Nothing was that difficult, just very dull at times. Nevertheless, this has

taught me a great skill that I will be able to implement in future classes. The minor challenging

factor was choosing the appropriate design. Most designs need to be updated but for me choosing

the design that was up to date was the least challenging for me. I planned strategically to achieve

my goals and designed an up-to-date website. Looking for pictures to incorporate into my

website was also a very entertaining and easy thing to do. I went into non-copyright websites to

find pictures that would not interfere with the site as they could be copyrighted when put into the

website.

My journey throughout this course has improved my perception as a writer. Writing is

something you can practice and develop passion in it and conquer. At the beginning of the
Ortiz 6

course, I was vague and never interested in improving my writing skills. Today it has become a

hobby; whenever I find something new, I write it to someone, and my interest in gathering

information has grown seamlessly. I was cautious about sharing information with others thinking

I was often messy. Writing has taught me to share with my friend, review my work and give me

appropriate feedback. I have learned to accept mistakes and work on them as a way to improve

my writing skills through feedback. The use of vocabulary and concrete language has improved,

and I look forward to gaining more as a writer. Writing has taught me confidence and belief in

myself. I am incredibly talented and have much potential to make good scripts. I can now

identify myself among good writers, like when I was naïve and composed about my abilities.

Overall, I feel like English 1302 with Professor Briones has turned me into a more confident and

ambitious writer who fully comprehends what it is to write a proper essay. Putting your emotions

into writing is ideal rather than letting go of those feelings in another negative way. Building this

website goes to show how a great teacher and a good student can go ahead and grow together.

This website will portray how my writing has evolved; hopefully, my audience will love it. The

most crucial aspect was learning how to write my emotions out.
