Vocabulary
1. Adjournment- a pause or rest during a formal meeting or trial, or the act of giving a pause or
rest.
e.g. Yesterday’s meeting of the ENGL4021 course adjourned at 4:00pm.

2. Adornment- something decorative, or the act of decorating something or someone.


e.g. Maria added some adornments to her resume.

3. Bcc- “Blind Carbon Copy” is a feature when sending an email message. When you place
email addresses in the BCC, those addresses are invisible to the recipients of the email.
e.g. Remember to send me a Bcc of the email you send to the supervisor.

4. Cc- “Carbon copy” is a feature when sending an email message. This feature sends copies of
an email to other people.
e.g. Send the minutes of the meeting to the president with Cc to the entire board.

5. Cognate- Cognate languages and words have the same origin or are related and, in some
way, similar.
e.g. Adapt and "adaptar" mean to adjust or modify something in order to satisfy a need.
These words are cognates.

6. Embellishment- something added to make another thing more beautiful or interesting, or the
process of doing this.
e.g. Carlos embellished his story by adding a romantic ending.

7. False cognate- words in different languages that have similar pronunciations and mean very
different things.
e.g. Embarrassed means to feel shame, but "embarazada" means to be pregnant. These words
are false cognates.

8. Gist- the substance or essence of a speech or text.


e.g. The report was not complete, but even so I was able to obtain the gist of the speech.

9. Minutes- notes taken of discussions and decisions made during meetings.


e.g. Today Camila will be in charge of taking the minutes of the meeting.

10. Motion- propose for discussion and resolution at a meeting or legislative assembly.
e.g. The student council presented a motion to hold a student strike.
11. Parallelism- balance within one or more sentences of similar phrases or clauses that have the
same grammatical structure.
e.g. One of the important characteristics of technical documents is parallelism.

12. Phonology- the study of speech sounds of a language or languages, and the rules governing
them.
e.g. Phonology studies the rhymes in a poem.

13. Roundup- the activity of gathering livestock together so that they can be counted or branded
or sold.
e.g. Glyphosate is a compound used in Roundup to control weeds spread through crops.

14. S.E.L. - Social-emotional learning is an educational method that aims to promote social and
emotional skills within school programs.
e.g. Updated schools are implementing the S.E.L. in their curriculum.

15. Venue- the place where something happens, especially an organized event such as a concert,
conference, or sports event.
e.g. The venue for the conference was booked a month ago.
