Curriculum Web: Goldilocks & The 3 Bears

Activity 1: Science/Engineering (Standard 1.1)

Build 3 chairs using popsicle sticks, scissors, and glue. Students will build a baby, middle, and
daddy size chair. Then we’ll test each chair’s strength by stacking blocks, determining how
many each can hold.

Activity 2: Science (Standard 1.5)

Create bears using paper plates. Students have the option to create a baby, mommy, or daddy
bear and decorate it. Materials will be provided: paper plates, paint, markers, popsicle sticks,
glue, and scissors.

Activity 3: Math (Standard 1.10)

Students will assist in making porridge (oatmeal). We will follow the directions and pour the
correct measurements.

Activity 4: Math (Standard 1.12)

Students will play a game comparing the sizes of things small, medium, and big. I will provide
picture cards of varying sizes and students will match cards to the correct size category.

Activity 5: Math (Standard 1.1)

Students will use a number chart and Teddy Grahams to count to the number 12. In the story
the number 3 is mentioned repeatedly- 3 bears, 3 chairs, 3 beds, 3 bowls- hence the number
12.

Activity 6: English/Grammar
Students write whether they like or don’t porridge. They will also color a picture of their choice
between a bowl of porridge or a bear.

Rationale:
For this unit I will be utilizing the concept of the story Goldilocks and the 3 Bears to teach
my first-grade students using the theme method. After reviewing my curriculum web, you may
have questions revolving around “Why I choose this story to base my unit off of?” I decided on
this story because literacy skills are vital to understanding STEM concepts and this story has
many elements that I can reinforce, introducing my students to new skills and activities.
Furthermore, I developed 6 activities for my students all integrating different lessons of STEM.
The first two activities take the science, engineering, and technology approach covering
Standard 1.1 and Standard 1.5. For activity 1, the students and I will be building 3 chairs- baby,
medium and daddy size- then testing the strength by placing blocks on top to determine if the
chair will stand strong or collapse. This activity will cover topics from scientific investigation,
reasoning, and logic in Standard 1.1. While for activity 2 we’ll be creating bear faces using
paper plates and other materials that I’ll provide. This activity students will learn about life
processes, most importantly, bears’ basic needs and physical characteristics. Next, my students
and I will be implementing math skills into the next 3 activities. Activity 3 will consist of students
making porridge, they will have to follow the directions provided and pour the correct
measurements. In activity 4, students will be comparing sizes of picture cards small, medium,
and large. Students will then have to match the cards to the correct size category. With this
activity students will learn about probability and statistics from Standard 1.12. Lastly, activity 5
will comprise of students using the number chart and Teddy Grahams to count to the number
12. This will cover Standard 1.1 on number and number sense, teaching students how to count
by ones. Finally, activity 6 will involve students writing up whether they like or don’t like porridge.
Along with that, they will be required to color a picture of their choice between a bowl of porridge
or a bear. This activity will not only teach students how to structure a sentence, but fine motor
skills and nurturing creativity. Overall, this unit will be enjoyable and very beneficial to my
students' learning, preparing them for real-world situations.
