Unit Description & Rationale

I used an thematic based approach to create a week long unit for teaching size comparsions and measuring

Three Bears. I will be inergrating 3 subject areas to teach the lesson: math, science, and english. Students will
be provided a host of activies to engange in the lesson. By the end of this lesson, students will be able to
compare sizes of objects and measure using nonstandard units.

 Students will be able to use nonstandard units (objects) to measure and compare length,
weight, and volume.

Content Knowledge
Old Dominion University Darden College of
Education

Students will be utilizing the story Goldie Locks and the Three Bears to learn about size
comparsions. The book talks a lot about various sizes of small, medium, and big. Also,it’s a lot
of talk in the book that compares the sizes of objects and the bears. I believe first reading this
story will help students to understand the general idea of size comparsions before beginning the
activities planed.

Learner Differences

All students can participate in the activities I have planned for this lesson. I picked this story
because it’s universal, and many people are famailar with the story or the concepts. Though
some students may need some assistance fully grasping the concept, which is why we are reading
Gold Locks and the Three Bears first. Also, if students don’t have prior knowledge on the topic
from Kindergarten, it too might create some diffuclties.

Outcomes/Goals
- Student will sort and classify concrete objects according to one or two attributes.
- Student will be able to classify and arrange objects according to characteristics or properties.
- Student will use nonstandard units to measure and compare length.
- Students can expand of vocabulary using vocabulary from other content areas.
