Subject: Mathematics Grade: One (1)

Topic: Statistics Students: 10 Boys; 8 Girls
Time: 9:20 – 10:45

Specific Objectives
Students will:
1. Collect and classify objects and people according to selected criteria.
2. Collect simple sets of data within the class.
3. Record collected data using simple number statements

Materials: Plain paper, Notebook, Mathematics Workbook, Whiteboard, Dry Erase Marker.

Content: Data collection means the process of preparing and collecting data.

Strategies & Skills: Tapping into prior knowledge, listening, and discussion.

Previous Knowledge: Students should have some knowledge of sharing and have an
understanding of equal meaning of the same amount.

Introduction
The teacher will draw some items on the board to bring about the concept, starting with a pond,
and using some butterflies, ducks, turtles, ladybugs, and frogs. A record will be made of the types
of animals and the number of each animal, using the aid of students. The teacher will review the
data collected, and discuss.

Development
Step 1
The teacher will demonstrate using objects that can be classified by a variety of attributes, and let
students identify ways in which they can be sorted. The teacher will encourage the use of more
than one attribute in the sorting e.g. yellow pencils with rubbers as opposed to yellow pencils
without rubbers. Students should explain how they sorted the objects.

Step 2
The teacher will continue by conducting a student survey, and guide students in conducting
simple interviews to obtain information about each other e.g. which cartoon show they enjoy
most favorite foods, sports, etc. Use the information gained by interviews to form groups within
the class. Each group will then collect data on one of the topics e.g. Hobbies/sports. They may
record data in simple sentences, or using tallies.

Step 3
The teacher will explain using more objects or examples until students fully understand or grasp
the concept. The teacher will also use the mathematics textbook as a guide.

Closure
Students will be given an activity from their mathematics workbook (page ). Students will also
be given an assignment to take home.
