JADAVPUR UNIVERSITY

Policy on Mentoring of Students in the University

Preamble

Jadavpur University is a public university in the state of West Bengal. It is one of the premier
universities in India catering education and research on Engineering, Science, Humanities, Social
Science and interdisciplinary subjects. The admission of students in different programmes of the
University is transparent, highly competitive and strictly follows governmental norms regarding
equity in terms of social and economic status of the students. Though it is an urban University, the
students of .the University come from every corner of the state and also from other states and
countries. This results in an overall diversity in the University ecosystem, which makes it challenging
for some students to adapt.

Jadavpur University has a legacy of inclusiveness and general tolerance since its inception through
close bonding among the students and the teachers. The teachers of the University are used to take
care of the students even going beyond their academics and sometimes, if need arises, by guiding
them emotionally as well. However, as the social structure has got more complex, the university
has felt the need to maintain more structured interactions with students and monitor their
progress, in order to guide them smoothly during their days in the University and help them to fulfil
their academic requirements, and grow as a good human beings and responsible citizens of the
country.

With this motivation, the present policy document has been framed for mentoring of all students
taking admission to the University at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Objectives of Mentoring

The purpose of mentoring is to monitor the academic progress and emotional well-being of
students during the period of their study at the University. The objectives of mentoring include, but
are not limited to, the following.

1. To focus and motivate the students to achieve the learning outcomes of the courses in the
academic programme, and thereby help to improve their academic performance
2. To generate interest in academics and other co-curricular activities in the University
3. To provide information about progression to higher studies or careers and help in
identifying the right career path based on the interest and capacity of the individual student
4. To track their physical and emotional well-being to help them to lead healthy and
stress-free lives
To help the students grow as good human beings and responsible citizens
Methodology of Mentoring

• Every department/school should identify teacher mentors for the students (mentees) after
their admission to a programme of the university. The identification of the mentor should
be made in the Board of Studies for the departments and Academic Council for the Schools.
• There should not be more than 25 mentees under one mentor (preferable).
• The mentor should meet the mentees individually, at least twice in every semester, and
discuss their progress in academics and co-curricular activities.
• A mentee (student), in case of need, can meet his/her mentor as many times as he/she
wants with prior appointment.
• A teacher should remain the mentor of a student during the entire period of a programme.
• In case a student wants to change his/her mentor he/she has to apply to the Head of the
Department / Director of School with justification. The change should be done after
discussion in the statutory body where the mentor appointment was done.
• The mentor should record all the interactions with the mentee in a way that will help in
mentoring the student. Separate records should be maintained for each student.
• Every Department/School should design a format for maintaining the mentoring records of
the students so that the progression of the mentee remains clear to the mentor. A
suggestive format is given in the Annexure.
• The mentor should note the weakness of the mentee, if any, either in academic or general
development and guide the mentee to overcome those.
• The mentor should monitor the regularity of the mentees under him/her through the
subject teachers and try to motivate the students who are irregular and/or try to identify
their problems.
