Characters, setting, plot, conflict, resolution
Characters- the people/animals in the story
Setting- where/when the story takes place
Plot- the main events in the story
Conflict- the problem in the story
Resolution- how the characters overcome the problem
Development:
Introduce my story, tell them it is a realistic fiction story that I wrote
Hand out paper copies as well as have it on the board
While I’m reading, if they hear a character, setting, conflict, or resolution, shout “Halt”
Have them say this a couple times
Explain that when they stop me, we’re going to discuss what we saw
Begin reading the story
When students yell “halt” stop and discuss why
Highlight on board the part that gives the character/setting/conflict/resolution
Have them highlight that on their own copies
Discuss with the class what they saw/heard
If students don’t yell “halt” when they should, pause and give them a few moments to
figure out what they are missing
Clarify why we are stopping in detail for any confusion
Guided Practice:
Complete page 41 in book (follow along with google slides)
o Questions are on the board, discuss each one with groups
After discussing with the class, show the answers and talk about them some
more
Answer questions based on the story I wrote that we read together
Ask them the question, have them discuss in groups, then discuss as a class
Independent Practice:
Write in the answers based on discussions in the textbook
Continue writing in notebooks about the elements in their own realistic fiction stories
o Continue brainstorming the elements and ideas
o If they are ready, continue to writing the full story (3 paragraphs, 3 sentences per
paragraph)
