Topic: Realistic Fiction Writing

Objectives and Standards: 


 Standard - CC.1.2.4.A: Determine the main idea of a text and explain how it is supported by key
details; summarize the text.
 Standard - CC.1.3.4.C: Describe in depth a character, setting or event in a story or drama,
drawing on specific details in the text.
 Standard - CC.1.3.4.K: Read and comprehend literary fiction on grade-level, reading
independently and proficiently.

 TSWBAT accurately identify and define the characters, setting, plot, conflict, and resolution of a
story
 TSWBAT accurately define “realistic fiction”
 TSWBAT brainstorm their own realistic fiction story
 TSWBAT independently write their own realistic fiction story
 TSWBAT use technology appropriately to stay on task and complete assignments

Anticipatory Set:
 Review: what is realistic fiction
o An imaginary story with characters or events that could be real
 Talk with your groups: what are the parts needed in a realistic fiction story
 Characters, setting, plot, conflict, resolution
 Characters- the people/animals in the story
 Setting- where/when the story takes place
 Plot- the main events in the story
 Conflict- the problem in the story
 Resolution- how the characters overcome the problem
Development:
 Introduce my story, tell them it is a realistic fiction story that I wrote
 Hand out paper copies as well as have it on the board
 While I’m reading, if they hear a character, setting, conflict, or resolution, shout “Halt”
 Have them say this a couple times
 Explain that when they stop me, we’re going to discuss what we saw
 Begin reading the story
 When students yell “halt” stop and discuss why
 Highlight on board the part that gives the character/setting/conflict/resolution
 Have them highlight that on their own copies
 Discuss with the class what they saw/heard
 If students don’t yell “halt” when they should, pause and give them a few moments to
figure out what they are missing
 Clarify why we are stopping in detail for any confusion
Guided Practice:
 Complete page 41 in book (follow along with google slides)
o Questions are on the board, discuss each one with groups
 After discussing with the class, show the answers and talk about them some
more
 Answer questions based on the story I wrote that we read together
 Ask them the question, have them discuss in groups, then discuss as a class
Independent Practice:
 Write in the answers based on discussions in the textbook
 Continue writing in notebooks about the elements in their own realistic fiction stories
o Continue brainstorming the elements and ideas
o If they are ready, continue to writing the full story (3 paragraphs, 3 sentences per
paragraph)
Closure:
 Review, what are characters, setting, plot, conflict, resolution
 What is realistic fiction
Adaptations:
 Thoroughly explain directions for reading activity 
 Display story on board
 Highlight with them
 Display answers on board for them to read and copy
Materials:
 Story to project
 Smart board/pen
 Highlighters
 Paper copies of story
 My copy with answers already highlighted
 Google slides of questions/answers
