The Semiconductor Research Centre, Department of Electronics and Communication

Engineering, Punjab Engineering College (Deemed to be a University), Chandigarh and

Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar today inaugurated a week-long DST-STUTI
Hands on Training Program on ‘Semiconductor Device Design Fabrication and
Characterization’ in technical collaboration with IEEE Chandigarh Subsection, supported by
Department of Science and Technology(GoI) under “STUTI” .Prof. Amitava Patra, Director
INST Mohali, was the chief guest for the inaugural ceremony. The advanced workshop is
fully funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India and will
take place from November 21 to 27, 2022.
The event began with Prof. Baldev Setia, Director PEC and Prof. Neena Gupta head of the
department ECE giving a green welcome to the esteemed guests and lighting the ceremonial
lamp.
Prof. Arun Kumar Singh, Coordinator of the workshop stated that the workshop has been
designed to blend the theoretical knowledge with practical experience at the newly
established Semiconductor Research Centre. More than 70 applications from the participants
of various institutions across the country were received out of which 38 applications were
accepted based on their merit. During the workshop, MTech and PhD students of various
institutes will be trained at Semiconductor Lab of ECE department, PEC. Also, faculty/
researchers from IIT, INST will be sharing their thoughts.
Prof. Neena Gupta, Head Electronics and Communication Department gave a brief
introduction about the ECE Department, PEC which was established in 1963. It provides one
B-Tech degree along with two full time Masters programme and full time and part time PhD
courses. She focused on the importance of these workshops and how they will help our young
researchers in future innovations. “The training programme will provide a forum to
researchers to update their technical skills, interact and lead out research and development in
the area of semiconductor devices” she said.
This was followed by display of a short video to give the attendees a glimpse of the Semi-
conductor Research Centre, where hands-on training program is being organised.
Director of PEC, Prof. (Dr) Baldev Setia during his welcome note stated, that the
Semiconductor Research Centre, ECE Department inaugurated by the President of India
during the Century celebrations is enriched by the inclusion of advanced research and design-
oriented equipment. He focused on the efforts of PEC in the Semiconductor Mission of India
and the need of capacity building programmes to deal with the issue of lack of sensors and
their production.
Prof. Amitava Patra, Director INST Mohali and Senior Professor at the Indian Association
for the Cultivation of Science delivered his key-note address and highlighted the importance
of semiconductors and integration of multi-disciplinary research “Science without borders”.
He mentioned the background and challenges of light-harvesting research. He motivated the
budding scientists and gave an insight into his publications over the years on topics such as
2D Semiconductor Nanoplatelets, Metal Nanocluster, Importance of Renewable energy,
Photocatalysis etc. He emphasized on the importance of human resources and scientific
knowledge being the necessary conditions for scientific progress of nation. He appreciated
the efforts of PEC to start such initiative in the field of semiconductor devices to meet the
needs of thermal industries, space, defence etc. He wished all the participants best wishes for
their training programme.
The Event concluded with Director PEC honouring the esteemed chief guest and guests of
Honour with mementoes.
