The role of satellite networks in the emerging 5G/IOT infrastructure

The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, IEEE Chandigarh

Subsection and IEEE PEC Student Branch organized an enriching and insightful session
with Dr. Ramesh K. Gupta on “The Role of Satellite Networks in the emerging 5G/IoT
Infrastructure”. He is an alumnus of PEC, Chandigarh, and has received Ph.D. and M.S.
degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Alberta, Canada along with an
MBA degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He was accompanied by his companion
batchmates.

The Welcome Address was given by Dr. Neena Gupta, HOD, Electronics and
Communication Department, PEC Chandigarh in which she fittingly stated about his
publications of more than 90 journals, conference papers, and three book chapters on
microwave devices, passive and active RF circuits, MMIC designs and their insertion into
satellite and wireless systems. He holds four U.S. patents. Currently, he is the advisor to
the MTT-S Marketing and Communication (MarCom) Committee.

He advised the students to figure out the maximum gap between that aspirational day and
what they are today and asked them to devote time today to bridge that gap so that 15
years later they can live what they aspire for. He shared his expertise and wisdom, he also
engaged the students in some highly valuable life lessons. It was a very interactive
session and a highly enriching experience for the students. He spoke on various topics
such as Telecom networks, Future development of IMT (International mobile
telecommunication) , 5G and network perspective, Satellite network, Reliable and cost-
effective access to space, NTN integration with 5G and also their issues and challenges.

This session was one of the most sought after one of the year and the audience was
greatly interested in learning from such an honourable speaker. The session was very
informative with the speaker clearing our concepts in a lucid way and using techniques
that peaked our interest. Dr. Arun Kumar Singh, Chair IEEE Chandigarh SubSection and
Organizer for the expert lecture commended the Student Lead and Volunteers for their
support, diligence, and hard work. In his vote of thanks, he extended his heartfelt
gratitude to all three alumni and looked forward to having them on campus again which
was followed by momento distribution to them by Prof Neena Gupta.
