Composite Construction
Building
Steel beam and reinforced concrete slab joined by AR
shear connector give action as a beam structures
produce load bearing efficiently that combined
strength of steel and concrete slab. It allow longer
span with thinner and lighter floor, which provide great
cost saving in entire construction expenses. AR shear
connectors can be welded throughmetal decks, which
secure the decks to the beam and also the beam to
reinforced concrete slab with the studs producing all
three structural members act as a strong unit.

Benefits shear connector by metal deck

The recognized advantages of composite beam construction are augmented in many cases trough the use of metal
deck.

The composite beam consists of three elements : (1) steel beam, (2) reinforced concrete slab, and (3) AR shear
connector welded to the beam. The studs transfer horizontal shear from slab to beam, causing the two elememnts to
act as a unit. Thus, the strength and stiffness of the efective section can be increased without using more steel.

Specifically, composite design permits saving in steel tonnage up to 20%; reduces building height and saves on
materials because lighter beams result in shallower floor section; and provides larger rooms with fewer obstructions
because longer span may be used.

Recommended prosedures at job site for best result

The best stud welding results are achieved through adherence to recommended jobsite prosedures and conditions.
Factors such as painted beam flanges, water, deck fitup to the beam, and inadequate power can seriously hamper
satisfactory welding. Here are some important jobsite requirements.

* Top flanges of beams should be unpainted. The beams should be free of heavy rust and mill scale, dirt, sand, or
other materials which will interfere with the welding operation.
* Floor sheets or deck material also should be free of dirt, sand, or other foreign materials.
* Water on the deck or between the deck and beams must be removed before welding.
* Floor sheets or deck material must rest tightly upon the top flange of the beam.
* Adequate incoming AC power must be available for power requirements of recommended power sources.
* Adequate welding power must be available to provide weld current requirements as indicated in recommended
Weld Setup.

Cable length and size have a definite effect on power source current output and become increasingly important
when dealing with high currents and high welding rates. Refer to factors affecting equipment installation for cable
recommendations.

Numerous factor affect equipment installation

The welding equipment use and setup depens on the welding rate requirements nd jobsite conditions.

Small cables heat up rapidly, increasing resistance and decreasing the power for the weld. ALWAYS USE #4/0
WELDING CABLE, AND USE THE SHORTEST POSSIBLE CABLE LENGTHS.

Usual maximum cable length is 200 feet. If adequate current cannot be obtained, shorten cable lengths or parallel
two #4/0 cable. Note : Cable lengths mean total cable length in the weld current including ground cable.

A clean solid ground is a must . To be certain that you have such a connection, always grind or otherwise clean the
surface where the ground with a heavy screw type clamp.

Tip on weld quality control and inspection

Recommended practices
Thorough training of stud welding operators is essential to insure proper set-up and operation of equipment.

Even the best operators, however, need to follow certain practices if deck is to be installed with weld-through AR
shear connectors. Be sure to:

* Lay deck material, in dry weather, just ahead of the stud welding crew when possible. Such scheduling is the best
way to avoid problems caused by water and dirt which may collect on deck material or between deck and the
beam.
* It is best to keep the tacking or puddle welding of deck to minimum prior to stud welding.
* Remove any standing water on deck or beams before welding. Sweep and/or blow water using compressed air or
a propane torch.
* Brush and blow away from weld area any dirt, sand, concrete dust, etc. before welding studs.
* Keep studs and ferrules dry by storing them in a waterproof enclosure. Rusty studs or damp, wet ferrule will affect
weld quality. After welding, ferrule should be broken free from the stud.
* Do not lay out any more ferrules, ahead of stud welder, on deck material for welding, than can be welded in one
production period. Ferrules not used and left on the deck may absorb moisture and affect weld quality.
* Do not weld through two thicknesses of hot dipped galvanized or cellular deck. Proper fit up between sheets is
almost never obtained, and excessive gap between sheets will cause poor welds.

Testing before and after welding

Before starting any stud welding operation, or after the welding equipment has been moved, Changed, or not used
for a period of time, trial or test studs should be welded.

A minimum of two test studs should be welded. These studs should then be bent to an angle of 30° from their
original axis by either striking the studs with a hammer or by placing a pipe or other suitable hollow device over the
stud and manually or mechanically bending the stud. If failure occurs in the weld zone of either stud, correct or
adjust the setup and repeat the test. Two consecutive studs should be welded and found satisfactory before any
production studs are welded.

If visual inspection reveals studs that do not show full fusion or a full 360° flash ( wel fillet), each stud should be bent,
by striking with a hammer or by placing a pipe or other suitable hollow device over the stud and manually or
mechanically bending, approximately 15° off perpendicular in a direction opposite to the missing flash. If the weld
does not fracture, the stud should be considered accptable and left bent. Stud that fail this test should be replaced.

Visual Inspection of Welds

At right are four stud welds-two good, two bad. They
show the kinds of conditions that help you determine
whether a weld needs bend-testing. Uniform
interpretation of such results is essential.

1. This is a typical weld through hot dipped 2. This is a good weld in which the weld flash (fillet),
galvanized deck material in which the deck was is not uniform. Absence of a uniform flash (fillet),
tight against the beam. Note the relatively uniform, does not necessarily indicate a bad weld.
clean weld metal flash (fillet), or build up of weld Questionable weld should be tested, however.

3,4. Here are typical results when weld are made

through water on the deck or with water between
the deck and the beam. Note the "frothy," porous
appearance of the weld. Failure shows a porous,
incomplete weld that fractured during the bend
test.
