General safety requirements


Read the grab user manual. Damage, abuse, improper lifting, improper handling or improper executing the
procedure can lead to personal injury or damage to equipment. If in doubt about the safe or proper assembly of the
product consult manufacturer. Nemag is not responsible for any injuries during executing the procedure.

• This document and the warnings included do not replace your responsibility to use common sense when you do work with the
grab.
• Make sure to apply the local or applicable national safety regulations.
• Only let approved maintenance engineers do repairs to the grab. If you are not sure, contact Nemag B.V.
• The labels and other markings on the grab are a part of the safety instructions. Do not hide or remove the labels. If you
cannot read the labels, replace the labels.
• Do not operate the grab or do not do an inspection or maintenance, when you are under the influence of medication, drugs or
alcohol.
• Keep bystanders at a safe distance.
• Put on the necesary personal protective equipment.

Personnel disciplines
A minimum of 2 people are required to do this procedure in a safe way. The following disciplines are required:
• Construcional fitting
• Welding
• Lifting

Approved maintenance engineer


The approved maintenance engineer is specified as a person that fully knows the grab and its safe operation. The approved
maintenance engineer is professionally skilled to do maintenance on grabs. The approved maintenance engineers must obey all
related safety regulations and are approved to do maintenance on the grab. It is the responsibility of the owner of the grab to make
sure that all maintenance engineers obey these safety regulations. The maintenance engineers are approved when they received
training to fully know the grab and its safe operation. On request of the owner and by separate ageement, Nemag B.V. can provide
training.

Instructions

Prepare new main plates


1. Cut and prepare bevels according the following
drawing:
• 4 pieces per grab
• use the supplied DXF file for the cutting
contour: 0099801_Extern-REV. A.
1. Optional: Apply hard face welding on the surfaces
mark in blue.
• See page 3 for welding recommendations hard
face welding
• Straighten the plates after hard face welding

Bucket modification

2. Place the grab in semi open position on a flat and


stable ground.

3. Mark where to remove the existing tooth plate (A).

Use the new tooth plate as a template to B
determine where to cut

4. Remove the existing tooth plate (A) by gouging or
flame cutting. C
CAUTION
Make sure to not damage the bottom
plate (C)

5. Make all the remaining plate edges (D) smooth by


grinding

6. Place the new plates and fix by tack welding.

7. Weld the plates to the bucket:
• Preheat temperature: 75ºC
• Welding recommendations: see below
• After welding, reduce cooling speed!
8. Check the weld for cracks by MPI

Recommendations hard face welding


Procedure
NOTE
Apply hard face welding to the parts on the grab that are subject to high wear, such as the lip plates and the
bottomplates. This layer may extend the lifetime of the part of the grab. You can apply steel in the grab for
repair purposes.

1. Remove the loose parts and the loose pieces of the old weld or hard face welding.
2. Remove corrosion and dirt.
3. Use low Current-Voltage (short arc range).
4. Prevent high dilution of base material.
5. Apply a maximum of two layers on each other. In case of more than two layers are necessary, first apply a buffer layer.
