THE TEN CORE RULES OF NETIQUETTE

Netiquette, or network etiquette, is concerned with the "proper" way to communicate in an online environment. Consider the following "rules," adapted from Virginia
Shea's The Core Rules of Netiquette, whenever you communicate in the virtual world.

1. Remember the human. Always remember the Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have others do unto you. Remember that there is a person on the other
side of the monitor, all users deserve respectful communication.

2. Adhere to the same standards of behavior online that you follow in real life.
Yes, cyberspace and real life are different when it comes to standards, but you don't have to lower your standards whenever you are in cyberspace.

3. Know where you are in cyberspace. The internet varies from domain to domain, the same written communication can be acceptable in one area, where it might
be considered inappropriate in another. "Lurk before you Leap"

4. Respect other people's time and bandwidth. We as virtual communicators and in most cases we are so-called content creators make sure that the time spent
reading, watching, viewing your content isn't wasted.

5. Make yourself look good online. We as users can't avoid judgments from cyberspace, but always keep in mind that looking good online does not always mean
you need to become perfect, but in the sense that you need to understand things and to communicate things in a good manner.

6. Share expert knowledge. Share what you know, the internet was created in which information can be shared or accessed in facts. The Internet was built in order
to have an exchange in different sets of information.

7. Help keep flame wars under control. We Filipino users most of the time feed the flames of two or three different individuals leading them to a more complex
situation, but come to think of it, is it good? Maybe some of us make those things as entertainment but in no case, that flaming in cyberspace is a good practice.

8. Respect other people's privacy. Privacy is about respecting individuals. If a person has a reasonable desire to keep something private, it is disrespectful to
ignore that person's wishes without a compelling reason to do so.

9. Don't abuse your power. Knowing more than others do or having more power than others does not give you the right to take advantage of anyone. Always
remember Rule 1: Remember the Human.

10. Be forgiving of other people's mistakes. Not everyone has the same amount of experience in cyberspace. Don't be that someone who corrects a user
misspelled words in his/her comment box. Understand the means on how to correct someone's mistake. If you feel compelled to respond to a mistake, do so in a
private email rather than a public forum.

"Freedom of Speech doesn't justify online bullying. Words have power, be careful how you use them."
