CHAPTER 1 – DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE

Alice sat by the bank of a river on a sunny day and watched her sister read a book. Alice thought it was very silly to read a
book instead of enjoying the sunny day. Just then, a White Rabbit with pink eyes ran close by her. Now a white rabbit with
pink eyes running by was not so strange. The White Rabbit was also saying out loud to itself, “Oh dear, oh dear, I shall be
too late” and wearing a button down shirt and a dress coat and even that didn’t seem strange to Alice. Then, the rabbit
pulled out a pocket watch, checked the time and then the rabbit continued on its way.

A white rabbit with a button down shirt, a dress coat and a pocket watch running by was far too strange for Alice to ignore.
So, Alice got up and ran after the rabbit. While running after the White Rabbit she saw him jump down into a very large
rabbit hole. Without thinKing about how she could get out again, she jumped in after him. Before she knew what was
happening, she found herself falling. Falling. Falling. In fact, she fell for so long that she even had time to look around. She
noticed that the sides of this rabbit hole were filled with bookshelves and cupboards. The bookshelves and cupboards had
books and maps and pictures and even some jellies and jams.

Now Alice somehow felt like she should be scared of this whole falling down thing, and worry about what will happen when
she hits the bottom, but she wasn’t. Instead she thought, “Well, after all this time falling I must almost be near the center
of the Earth by now!” Alice tried to remember how many miles it would be to the center of the Earth and figure out how
long it would take to fall there straight down. Then, she started to think, “I wonder if I could fly through the center of the
Earth and come out the other side? I shall have to ask them, ‘Hello, what country have I come to? Is this New Zealand or
Australia?’” Down, down, down she fell and just as she was about to fall asleep from boredom, “bam!” she fell into a pile of
dried leaves.

Fortunately, Alice was not at all hurt. In front of her there was a long passage and she could see the white rabbit, running
away down the tunnel. Alice quickly started running after him. As the White Rabbit turned a corner she heard him say, “Oh
my ears and whiskers, it’s getting late!”.

When Alice ran around the corner, the rabbit was nowhere to be seen. The tunnel just continued into the dark but on one
side of the wall there was a little door. The door looked small enough that Alice thought the rabbit must have had to
squeeze himself through. Near the little door was a solid glass table. The table had two things on it. One was a golden key
and the other was a bottle with a label on it that said “drink me”. On the door there was a golden lock, that looked exactly
like it should fit the key. Perfect! Except that Alice could never fit through the door herself, she was just too big.

Alice knew that it is foolish to drink something if you don’t know what it is because it could make you very sick. But now,
she was stuck at the end of a tunnel with a small door and no way to go back. So Alice decided to just taste a little bit of
what was in the bottle that said “drink me” and see if it tasted bad. In fact, it tasted delicious like caramel candy. Before
she could even think about what she was doing, she drank the whole bottle. The drink made her head feel dizzy. At the
same time it magically shrank her entire body down so that she was only just about 10 inches tall. “Perfect”, thought Alice,
“Now I’m the perfect size for walKing through the little door”.

Alice felt like a very smart little girl. But when she walked up to the door and tried to open it the door was locked. She
looked up at the now very large glass table (compared to now a very little Alice). Sitting on top of the glass was the golden
key. She tried to climb the glass legs on the table many times, but she would just slide down the legs each time. Finally, she
began to cry.

As she sat next to the legs of the table crying, she could see a small glass box sitting beneath the glass table. “I don’t’
remember seeing that before”, Alice thought. Inside the glass box she found a small cake which had the words “eat me”
written on it. “Well”, thought Alice, “I’ll eat it. If it makes me bigger I can get the key and if it makes me smaller, maybe I
can slip under the door?”. So she ate the cake, which was actually quite delicious and she began to rub her head and look
up at the key on the table. “I wonder if I’m getting smaller or larger?” Alice thought.

CHAPTER 2 – THE POOL OF TEARS

“Good bye feet!”, thought Alice. Alice looked down and saw her feet stretching farther and farther away from her head.
She grew larger and larger until she was almost 9 feet tall. “Well now I can take this” she thought and she grabbed the key
from the glass table.

But then, her head hit the roof. She lay down on the floor and looked through the keyhole. She could see a beautiful
garden on the other side of the door. But now she was far too big to fit through the door so she began to cry. Tall Alice
cried and cried so much that a pool of water 4 inches deep formed around her on the floor.

After a while Alice could hear someone coming back down the hall again. It was the White Rabbit. This time the White
Rabbit was fanning himself with a large fan. “Oh the Queen will be angry if I am late!” the White Rabbit was saying to
himself. As the White Rabbit got near to Alice she said “Excuse me Mr. Rabbit”. The White Rabbit had not been paying
attention. He was so scared by Alice that he dropped his fan and ran away into the dark hallway.

Now Alice had been feeling a bit hot, so she picked up the fan. As she fanned herself she looked at her long body sitting on
the floor. “Who am I exactly?” Alice thought to herself. “I wasn’t 9 feet tall this morning, was I?” she wondered. To make
sure that she could remember who she was, she tried to think of things she knew. “Let’s see, the capital of England is Paris.
The capital of France is Rome. Five times four is twelve and four times six is thirteen.” Now somehow Alice knew that was
all wrong and she started to cry again.

Then Alice looked up and saw that she had been shrinKing again. She looked and she was now than the little door to the
garden. “How did that happen?” She thought. Just then she noticed, each time she used the fan she shrunk a little bit. So
she dropped the fan before she shrank away to nowhere. But now, Alice was floating in the little pool of tears she had
created from her crying. “Everything sure is strange today” Alice thought. Just then, a mouse came swimming by. Since
Alice was so small, the mouse seemed very large.

“Hello Mr. Mouse” Alice said politely, “do you know the way out of this pool?”. But the mouse kept swimming and ignored
Alice. “Perhaps he doesn’t speak English”, Alice thought. “I will practice my French”. But the only thing Alice could
remember how to say in French was “Où est ma chatte?”. So, Alice said this to the mouse, who then looked at Alice with a
scared look. “Oh my, I’m sorry. I forgot that means ‘Where is my cat?’. I guess you don’t like cats?”. “Don’t like cats? Of
course I don’t like cats” said the mouse. “Would you like cats if you were a mouse?” the mouse said. “How about dogs?”
Alice asked. “I certainly don’t like dogs either” said the mouse who was trying to swim. “Swim with me to the shore and I
will tell you why I don’t like either cats nor dogs” the mouse said, as it swam away out of the pool of tears.

As Alice swam after the mouse she noticed that quite a few animals had fallen into the pool. There was a duck and a dodo,
a parrot and an eaglet. They all swam to the land behind Alice.
CHAPTER 3 – A CAUCUS-RACE AND A LONG TALE

There was now a strange looKing set of animals on the side of the pool of tears. All the birds and animals were dripping wet
and uncomfortable.

They all discussed together how they may get dry so they wouldn’t catch a cold. The mouse sat in the middle of the group
and said: “Attention! Are you all ready? This is the driest thing I know”. The mouse then began to recite a long and boring
book he had read at school. It was extremely dry and boring. Finally the mouse turned to Alice and asked, “How are you
doing now, Dear Alice?”. “I’m as wet as ever, in spite of your boring speech”, she said, “I don’t think that is the kind of ‘dry’
that we need”.

Then the Dodo bird stood up, also still very wet. “Well, then. We must dry off by being in a race. I declare a caucus-race”.
“A what-kind-of-race, now?” Alice said. “The best way to teach is to show”, the Dodo said and he marked off a race course
on the ground. Then, Alice, the birds and all the animals ran around the race course bumping into each other. No one
knew who won. No one knew when the race ended. But a half hour later, everyone was dry again.

“Everyone has won!” the Dodo bird said. “And so, we all must have prizes.”. The Dodo pointed at Alice and said, “She must
give each of us a prize”. Alice didn’t know what to give as prizes. But she put her hand in her pocket and she found a piece
of candy for each animal there. The big animals complained that the candy was too small. The small animals complained
that the candy was too big. Finally they were all done eating and complaining and they sat down.

While they were sitting Alice remembered something. “You promised to tell us why you don’t like cats nor dogs” she said
to the mouse. “Mine is a long tale”, said the mouse, sadly. “Why yes, you do have a long tail”, Alice agreed, “but why is it
sad? Shouldn’t every mouse be happy about a long tail?”.

The mouse then began telling a very long tale. Very long. And sad. And horribly boring. Alice began to fall asleep. “You
aren’t paying attention!” the mouse said angrily. “But, I was paying attention” Alice said trying to keep her head up. The
mouse wouldn’t listen and he began to walk away. “Come back and finish your story” Alice and the animals said. “Well,”
Alice said out loud, “if Dinah was here, she would go and fetch back this mouse in a hurry!”. The other birds and animals
turned to Alice and said, “Who is this ‘Dinah’?”. Alice, not thinKing about who she was talKing to, said, “Why Dinah is my
cat. She is very good at catching cats and birds!”.

At that all the little animals and birds starting running away. The canary called out to its children: “It is getting late, we must
be going!” the magpie said, “Sorry, I must be going…” and all the animals quickly disappeared. “Oh no. I guess I shouldn’t
have talked about Dinah…” Alice thought. Just then she was feeling lonely and she started to cry again. Then she heard
little footsteps. “I hope it is the mouse coming back” she thought.

CHAPTER 4 – THE RABBIT SENDS IN A LITTLE BILL

It was the White Rabbit again. “Oh my fur and whiskers” he said. He was looKing back and forth for something. “Where
did I drop that fan?” he said. Alice began looKing back and forth with him. Neither of them could find the fan though.
Finally the White Rabbit noticed Alice and he said, “There you are Mary Ann. Run home at once and get me the fan”. The
White Rabbit mistook Alice for his house maid, Mary Ann. But Alice was so frightened by the yelling White Rabbit that she
ran off to get a fan.

Alice didn’t know where she would be going, but she quickly came to a little house. Without thinKing she ran into the
house to try and find the fan for the White Rabbit. “How strange to be ordered about by a rabbit”, Alice thought. “Next
you know my cat Dinah will be telling me what to do!”. Alice went up to the second floor of the house and she found a fan
sitting on a table. She picked up the fan and went to leave the room. But also on the table was a bottle like the first one
she drank that morning. It had no message on the bottle but Alice thought, “Whenever I eat or drink in this strange little
world, something interesting is sure to happen.”

Before she could think, she had drunk half the bottle. Then, she grew so fast that her head hit the ceiling and now she was
stuck in this little rabbit sized room. She kept growing and growing and she even had to put her arm out the window and
one foot in the chimney just to be comfortable. Finally she stopped growing, but she was now stuck in this little room. “I
sure wish I hadn’t gone down that rabbit hole” Alice thought, “Fairy tales are much more fun to be read than to be in one.”

As she sat there in the room, she wondered how she could get out of this situation. Then she heard the White Rabbit
coming down the hall. “Mary Ann, Mary Ann!” he said. “Where is the fan I sent you to get for me?”. He sounded very
angry and Alice was afraid. Then, she remembered that now she was much larger than he was and he should now be afraid
of her, if anything.

The rabbit tried to get in the bedroom door, but it was blocked by Alice. So he tried to go around the outside of the house.
“I’ll just climb through the window” the rabbit said out loud. “I don’t think you will”, Alice said in a whisper. As the rabbit
came outside he looked up and saw Alices arm sticKing out. The rabbit looked at the arm up and down. “Pat, Pat!” the
White Rabbit called. Pat, the White Rabbits gardener, came running.

The White Rabbit said, “Pat, what is that in the window?”. Pat said, “Well that is clearly an arm”. “But Pat, you silly goose,
how can that be an arm? It fills the whole window?”. Well Pat thought. “That may be, but no matter what, it is clearly an
arm.” “Well it doesn’t belong here, take it away” the White Rabbit said to Pat. At that, Alice moved her hand and tried to
grab at Pat or the White Rabbit. Both of them yelled in fear and ran away. Now the White Rabbit and Pat went off to get
help to do something about this arm sticKing out of a window. They went and got Bill the lizard and a ladder. “Someone
needs to go down the chimney and remove this arm!” said the White Rabbit. Both Bill and Pat argued for a time while
getting a ladder. Finally Bill the lizard climbed on the roof and then went down the chimney.

Alice could hear Bill coming down the chimney toward her foot. She pulled her foot in as he got close and then BAM, she
gave Bill a swift kick. Up, up, up Bill went and flew over the house into a hedge. The White Rabbit and Pat went over to the
hedge where Bill was laying on his back. “What happened?” they asked at the same time. “I’m not sure” Bill said. “Just all
of a sudden this… foot came at me and I landed here”. “Well this means war!” the White Rabbit said.

Then, when Bill felt better, the White Rabbit, Bill and Pat all gathered up little stones from the garden and began throwing
them at Alices arm and through the window. “You’d better stop that!” Alice yelled at them. But then she noticed that the
pebbles were turning into little cakes when they hit the floor. Alice remembered that eating things in this strange world
makes you bigger or smaller so Alice ate one of the little cakes. Alice quickly shrunk down enough so she could get through
the bedroom door. She ran out of the house, past the White Rabbit, Bill and Pat and into a patch of woods. “Now I’ve got
to find a way to grow to my normal size” she thought.

This was a good plan. Alice leaned against a buttercup flower to rest. She thought that she would need to eat something to
grow big again, “But what should I eat?” she thought. She looked around and saw a large mushroom. She walked up to the
mushroom and had to stand on tip toe to see on top of it. Sitting on top of the mushroom was a large blue caterpillar
quietly smoKing a hookah pipe. The caterpillar didn’t notice her or anything else.

CHAPTER 5 – ADVICE FROM A CATERPILLAR

The caterpillar and Alice looked at each other. After a long time the caterpillar said in a sleepy voice, “Who. Are you?”
Alice thought and said, “Well actually, I’m not sure. I haven’t been myself lately”. “I don’t understand,” the caterpillar said.
“If you aren’t you, who are you?”. “It is hard to say” she said, “I’ve been many different shapes and sizes today. I’m sure
you will understand someday, when you turn into a butterfly”. The caterpillar stared at her and didn’t speak for a long
time. Finally Alice turned around to leave.

“Come back, I have something important to say”, the caterpillar yelled at her. When Alice had come back, the caterpillar
said, “Don’t get angry”. Alice waited for him to say something else for a long time. Finally the caterpillar said, “how,
exactly, are you different today?”. “Well for one thing” Alice said, “I keep changing my size”. “What size to you want to
be?” he asked. Alice looked at herself. She was about 3 inches high now. “A lot larger than I am now, three inches is much
too small”. “And what is wrong with being 3 inches tall?” the caterpillar asked (he was exactly 3 inches tall), “you will get
used to it in time”. At that, the caterpillar began smoKing on his hookah pipe and ignored Alice for a while.
Finally, the caterpillar spoke again. “One side will make you smaller and the other side will make you larger”, he said. “The
other sides of what?” Alice asked. “Of the mushroom” he answered and he pointed at the mushroom he was sitting on.
She reached her hands around to both sides of the mushroom and grabbed a large piece in each hand. “But which is
which?” she thought. She took a bite of her right hand mushroom and she shrank so fast that her chin hit her foot! She
was shrinKing fast so she took a bite of her left hand mushroom. She began to grow again. But now, her neck and head
stretched so far away from her body that she couldn’t see her hands anymore. Her face was now far up into the trees.

A pigeon was sitting on a tree branch as Alices head came by. “A snake!” the pigeon yelled. “I am not a snake” Alice said.
“Well if you aren’t a snake, why is your head in the branches and your neck twisted about like that?” she said. “And I had to
fly all the way up here to get away from you snakes but here you come to eat my eggs anyway.” Alice felt unsure exactly
what she was after this day, but she knew she wasn’t a snake. “I’m telling you, I am not a snake” she said, not very sure of
herself. “Are you telling me that you don’t eat eggs?” the pigeon asked. “Well, I do eat eggs,” Alice said but I don’t want
yours”. At that, Alice finally got her hand up to her mouth so she could eat the other part of the mushroom again. This
time Alice carefully ate very small bites from the mushroom until she was her correct size again.

Alice was thinKing about how to find her way into that beautiful garden she had seen through the keyhole in the door. As
she walked through the woods she came upon a little house about 4 feet high. She took a nibble from the mushroom until
she was the correct size to enter it then walked up to the door.

CHAPTER 6 – PIG AND PEPPER

Alice walked up to the door and knocked. Inside she could hear a very large noise. She thought, “No one can hear me over
that noise” so she simply opened the door and walked in. She was in a kitchen. There was a woman sitting on a stool
holding a baby. There was a cook standing over a large cooking pot stirring soup. “There is far too much pepper in that
soup” Alice said to herself and then Alice sneezed. Then the woman with the baby sneezed and then the baby sneezed.
Only the cook didn’t sneeze and the cat sitting on the floor didn’t sneeze. The cat had a large smile from ear to ear.

“Excuse me” Alice asked, “why does your cat smile like that?” The woman said “That is a Cheshire-cat” she answered. “In
fact, all cats can smile and most of them do”. “Well I don’t know any cats that can smile” Alice said. “Well I guess you don’t
know much” the woman said to Alice. Alice was starting to feel hurt that she said this to her but before she could think
much about it the cook took the soup off the fire and starting throwing things at the woman, the baby and Alice; saucepans
plates and dishes. The baby, which had been sneezing and crying the whole time, now began crying louder. “Be careful for
the baby!” Alice yelled, just as a plate almost hit the baby’s nose.

“Well then, you can take care of him” the old lady said and she handed the baby to Alice as she walked out of the kitchen
door. “Alice tried to hold the baby nicely but it just kept moving, crying and sneezing. Alice took the baby outside, away
from the pepper and noise. Finally Alice got a good look at the baby as it stopped moving a bit. She looked into the baby’s
face and could see that the baby had a pig nose. As she kept looKing she thought, “This is either a very ugly baby or a fairly
cute pig”. Finally she decided that it was actually a pig. She put the pig down and it walked away into the woods.

As she turned to walk away from the house she saw the Cheshire-cat sitting on a tree branch in front of her. The Cheshire-
cat had a large smile on its face and long claws. “Excuse me pussy cat, could you please tell me which way to go?” Alice
asked. “Well that depends on where you are trying to get to” he replied. “Well, I don’t really care very much where I go, as
long as it’s not here”. “Well in that case” the cat answered, “it doesn’t matter where you go, as long as you walk long
enough, then you won’t be here. But if you go that way” the cat pointed, “you’ll find a hatter and if you go that way” the
cat pointed the other way, “you’ll find a March Hare. Visit either if you like, they are both quite crazy”.

“I’m sure I don’t want to meet crazy people” Alice said a bit worried. “Well you can’t help that, we are all crazy here, even
you” the Cheshire-cat said. As Alice watched the cat he began to disappear. First his tail, then his body and finally all that
was left was his smile and that vanished too. Alice looked at the branch where the cat had been sitting and thought, “well
I’ve seen a cat without a smile but I’ve never seen a smile without a cat before! What a strange day.”

Alice decided to visit the March Hare. “I hope he isn’t too crazy” she thought…
CHAPTER 7 – A MAD TEA PARTY

As she came up to the March Hares house she could see that they were outside having a tea party. The March Hare and the
Hatter were sitting at one end of a long table. With them was a mouse. “There is no room here!” they said to Alice. “But
this table is very large and has lots of space” she replied. Then she sat down near them. The Hatter looked at Alice but all
he said was ‘Why is a raven like a writing-desk?’

Alice really like riddles and said “Oh I love riddles. I believe I can answer your riddles”. “Do you think so?” the March Hare
said. “Exactly so” Alice said proudly. “Then you should say what you mean” the March Hare continued. “I always say what
I mean” Alice said, “or at least, I always mean what I say”. “Well those are not the same thing at all” the Hatter said. “You
may as well say ‘I see what I eat’ is the same as ‘I eat what I see’!” Alice didn’t think those things were the same thing at all
and she waited for them to tell a riddle. Finally the Hatter said “What day of the month is it?” he said, looKing at his pocket
watch. Alice thought a while and she said “The fourth”. “Nope, you are two days wrong!” the Hatter said.

The March Hare took the watch and dipped it in his tea. Alice watched him do this and she said “What a funny watch. It
tells you the day of the month but not the O’clock that it is?” The Hatter said “Why should it. Does your watch tell you
what year it is?” “Of course not,” replied Alice “but that is because the year stays the same for so very long”. The Hatter
said, “Yes, just as it does with mine”. Now nothing the Hatter said makes sense so she didn’t reply.

“Have you guessed the riddle yet?” the Hatter asked. “No” she said sadly, “I give up. What is the answer to the riddle?” “I
have no idea” the Hatter said. Alice was a little upset and she said, “Well you should have something better to do with the
time than wasting it on riddles that have no answer”. At this the Hatter said sadly, “If you knew time like I know time, you’d
call him a he. He is a ‘he’ you know. And I asked him to keep the time at 1:30 all the time so it is always tea time”. Alice
looked around the table. “Is that why you have so many tea things here?” she asked. “Oh yes,” the Hatter replied. “We
keep a long table of tea things so we can just keep switching places and never have to clean up”.

The March Hare interrupted them both, “How about the mouse tell us a story instead of riddles about time?” he said.
“Once upon a time there were three sisters, Elsie, Lacie and Tillie and they lived at the bottom of a well….” “What did they
eat?” Alice interrupted him. The mouse thought and finally said, “Molasses”. Alice said kindly, “That can’t be, or they
would be very ill”. “And in fact they were, very ill” said the mouse sadly. “Well, why did they live at the bottom of a well?”
Alice asked. “Because it was a molasses well” the mouse said. “There is no such thing as a molasses well”, Alice said but
both the Hatter and the March Hare said “Shh, shh, shh” and so Alice stopped talKing.

But before the mouse could continue his story, the Hatter said, “I want a clean tea cup. Lets all move one place.” So the
Hatter moved to a clean cup space. The mouse moved to the Hatters place and the March Hare moved to the mouses
place. Alice moved to the March Hares place and the only one who got a clean cup from the move was the Hatter.

Finally, Alice couldn’t take their company any longer so she got up to leave. She thought they might call to ask her to stay
but they didn’t. As she walked away she could see the Hatter and the March Hare trying to give the mouse a bath in the tea
pot.

Alice walked through the woods again and this time she saw a tree with a door in the side of it. “Well everything here is
weird so I guess I should just go through the door” she said out loud. She opened the door and walked through and Bam!
She was back in the hallway with the glass table, the golden key and the door to the beautiful garden. She grabbed the key,
nibbled on some mushroom in her pocket to make her smaller, unlocked the door and walked through to a beautiful
garden.

CHAPTER 8 – THE QUEEN’S CROQUET-GROUND

The first thing Alice saw in the garden was a rose-tree with white roses. There were three gardeners painting the white
roses red. The three gardeners were actually very large playing cards with arms and heads and feet. One card was a 5 and
one was a 7 and the other was a 2. “Be careful Five!” Two said. “You almost splashed paint on me!”. “It isn’t my fault,
Seven bumped me…” Five said back.
“Excuse me,” Alice said politely, “why are you painting those white roses red?” Two looked at Five and Seven and then
answered Alice, “You see, we were supposed to plant a red rose tree, but we painted a white one by mistake. If the Queen
finds out, she’ll have all our heads cut off”. Just then, Five pointed across the garden and said, “The Queen, she is coming!”
Alice turned around to see what the Queen would look like.

The three gardener cards, 5 and 7 and 2 all fell down on their faces as the King and Queen came over. The King and Queen
were also large playing cards, both the King and Queen of hearts. When the Queen was right in front of Alice, the Queen
said, “What is your name, child?”. “My name is Alice, your majesty” Alice said. At first Alice was afraid. Then she thought,
“Why should I be afraid, they are only playing cards after all!”.

Then the Queen looked at 5 and 7 and 2 bowing down on the ground. “What are you doing here?” she said angrily. “Well
your majesty,” Two said very politely “you see, we were…”. The Queen interrupted him, “I can see very well what you are
doing” she said, “Guards! Off with their heads!” At that, the Queen walked away through the garden. Then other playing
cards with clubs came to take the three gardeners away. Alice quickly helped 5, 7 and 2 hide in a flower pot so they
wouldn’t be executed. “Did you take off their heads?” the Queen demanded. But the guards couldn’t find them in the
garden. “Um, yes your majesty, their heads are gone!” the soldiers said at the same time.

Across the garden Alice could see the King and Queen of hearts getting ready to play a game. “Can you play croquet?” the
Queen called out to Alice. “Yes your majesty, I can” she answered. But Alice had never seen such a strange game of
croquet. The balls were rolled up hedgehogs and the clubs were flamingos. The arches that you must hit the balls through
were other playing cards who bent over standing on their hands and feet to make the arch. Alice tried to hit the hedgehog
with her flamingos head but it kept moving. When she did get the flamingo to stay still her hedgehog “ball” had walked
away. The King and the Queen had the same problems but whenever the Queen got angry (which was about once a
minute), she would say, “off with his head!”. Alice wondered how anyone was still alive here since the Queen seemed so
fond of cutting off people’s heads.

Just then, when Alice was trying to find a way to escape, she noticed a smile in the air. Then the smile turned into a cats
head, but no cat body, and no tail. It was the Cheshire-cat again, well, at least just his head. “How do you like this game
Alice?” the cat asked. “Well, it isn’t very fun” Alice answered. “And the Queen seems to be so…..” Just then Alice noticed
that the Queen was standing next to her. So Alice continued saying “so… likely to win the game”. The Queen looked angrily
at the cat. “There should not be a cat here” the Queen said. “Off with his head!”. The guards said, “How can you take off a
head if there is not body?” The King said, “Anything with a head can be beheaded” and the Queen said, “If someone
doesn’t take off his head soon, I’ll have you all beheaded!”

CHAPTER 9 – THE MOCK TURTLES STORY

The Cheshire-Cat decided to fade away so the Queen said, “Let the game continue!”. So everyone went back to playing
croquet. Of course, during this time the Queen continued saying “Off with his head!” and “Off with her head!” whenever
she was angry, which was all the time. By the end of the game there were only three players left, the King, the Queen and
Alice. All the other players were in a group with the guards waiting to have their heads taken off.

The Queen decided that she was the winner of croquet. Then she asked Alice, “Have you met the mock turtle yet?”. “I
don’t even know what a mock turtle is” Alice answered. “Well a mock turtle is how you get mock turtle soup” the Queen
told her. “Come with me and I will show you where he is” the Queen ordered Alice. As they were walKing away from the
croquet-ground the King went up to the guards surrounding all the players. “You are all pardoned” the King whispered and
the guards let them go.

The Queen and Alice came up to a Gryphon. Alice had never seen a Gryphon before, which is an animal with the head and
wings of an eagle and the body of a lion. The Gryphon was sleeping so the Queen kicked it. “Wake up you lazy animal” the
Queen yelled. “And take this girl to meet the mock turtle”. The Gryphon looked a little scary to Alice but the Queen
seemed likely to yell “off with her head” about Alice, so she stayed with the Gryphon. “I must go off and see to executions”
the Queen said as she walked away. “She is all bark and no bite” the Gryphon smiled and said to Alice when the Queen was
gone. “She never actually gets to execute anyone. Well come with me” he said.
Alice followed the Gryphon to the edge of the water on a beach. Sitting on a rock she saw a mock turtle. The mock turtle
was sighing and sad. He looked like he was so sad that his heart would break. Alice felt very sorry for him. When they got
up to him Alice could see large tears in his eyes. “This young lady would like to hear your sad story” the Gryphon told him.
So the mock turtle began to speak, “Once, a long time ago, I was a real turtle” and then he stopped. Alice sat a long time
waiting to hear more, but the mock turtle didn’t speak. Finally, Alice got up to walk away but then the Mock Turtle said,
“When we were little we went to school in the sea. And we learned everyday”. Alice didn’t think this was so sad. “I went
to school everyday too” she said. “Well what did you learn?” the Mock Turtle asked. “We learned French and music” she
replied.

The Mock Turtle didn’t seem impressed. “But did you learn all the lessons? Did you learn Reeling and Writing, Ambition,
Distraction, Uglification and Derision?” he asked her. “What” Alice asked, is ‘uglification’?” Alice ignored the rest of the
Mock Turtles made up class lessons. “Uglification is obviously the opposite of beautification. We learned how to make
things uglier!” the Mock Turtle said proudly. “You really should pay attention at school more” the Gryphon said to Alice,
shaking his head.

“And how many hours a day did you do lessons?” Alice asked, still not impressed. “Well, we had 10 hours the first day and
9 hours the second day and 8 hours the third day and so on. That is why they are called lessons, because they lessen from
day to day” he replied. Alice thought about this. “So, the eleventh day should be a holiday?” she asked. “Well of course!”
the Mock Turtle and Gryphon said together, happy that Alice seemed to be understanding now. “Enough about lessons”
said the Gryphon, “now tell her about the dancing”

CHAPTER 10 – THE LOBSTER-QUADRILLE

“Have you ever met a lobster?” the Mock Turtle asked? Alice had actually eaten a lobster, but thought not to say so. “Why,
yes, I have… met a lobster” Alice replied. “Well in school we all learned the Lobster-Quadrille” the Mock Turtle said
proudly. “What is that?” she asked. “Well, it is a dance with… a lobster” he said. “Actually, group of lobsters” the Gryphon
added. “Quite right” the Mock Turtle agreed. “First, each person starts with a lobster. Then, we all go round and round
each other until finally you…” “Throw your lobster into the sea” the Gryphon finished his sentence. At this, both the
Gryphon and the Mock Turtle got up and starting dancing. “Like this” they both told Alice and they showed her the dance.

“Who shall sing the song?” the Mock Turtle asked as they danced. “Oh you should,” the Gryphon said “I’ve forgotten the
words”. Alice watched them dance and listened to them sing a song. Alice seemed to know the song but the words they
sang were all very wrong. After a while of them dancing Alice lied and said “Well that was very interesting to watch”. “We
have another song and dance about cod. You do know what a ‘cod’ is, don’t you?” the Mock Turtle asked. “Oh yes,” Alice
said, feeling hungry, “I’ve seen them at dinn—” and she stopped speaking, remembering that a cod might be a friend of
theirs.

“How about a porpoise?” the Gryphon asked, “you must go everywhere with porpoise”. “I think you must mean ‘purpose’”
Alice said, feeling a bit confused. “Well then, why don’t you tell us a bit about you and your adventures then” the Mock
Turtle said. Well Alice tried to tell them about her adventures but it all sounded very strange to her. The Gryphon and the
Mock Turtle leaned in close to listen as she told them about the White Rabbit, the Caterpillar and the tea party. Alice began
to wonder if anything in her life would ever be normal again.

Just then the Mock Turtle and the Gryphon were getting ready to get up and dance again. Far off in the distance they heard
an announcement: “The trial is beginning!”. “What trial could this be?” Alice asked. But the Gryphon grabbed Alice by the
hand and pulled her along. “Quickly!” he said to her. As they ran away they heard the Mock Turtle singing a sad song
about turtle soup…

CHAPTER 11 – WHO STOLE THE TARTS?

When Alice and the Gryphon arrived they could see the King and Queen sitting on their thrones. There were many small
animals and birds around them and the Jack was facing them. The Jack was also a large card with a head, hands and feet,
like the other cards. The Jack had chains on his hands to hold him. On both sides of him were guards. Next to the King was
the White Rabbit who had a trumpet and a long paper. Near the King and Queen was a table with a large dish of tarts.
“Those tarts look delicious” Alice thought, “I hope this trial gets over quickly and we can all have a snack”.

The King was also the judge. The jury box was filled with 12 creatures, both birds and animals. The 12 jurors had slates and
chalk. “What are they doing?” Alice whispered to the Gryphon, “the trial hasn’t started yet but they are writing”. “They are
writing down their names,” Gryphon said, “in case they forget their names by the end of the trial”. Alice thought that was
stupid so she said “Well that is stupid”. “Be quiet!” the King said, looking around. Alice put her head down but noticed that
all the jurors were writing “Well that is stupid” and “Be quiet” on their slates.

“Rabbit, start the trial” the King said. At that, the White Rabbit blew on his trumpet three times. Then, he read aloud from
a long piece of paper,

‘The queen of hearts, she made some tarts,

All on a summer day
The Jack of hearts, he stole those tarts
And took them far away!’

“What is your verdict?” the King said to the jurors. “But, king, there is a lot more to say yet!” the White Rabbit said. The
King looked annoyed. “Call your first witness!” he said loudly. The first witness was the Hatter. “Take off your hat” the
King said to the Hatter. “It isn’t my hat” the Hatter said back. “So, it is stolen!” the king said. “No, no, no, I’m a hatter,
selling hats is my job. I keep them to sell”. Alice looked and the jurors were writing “stolen” on their slates.

The queen leaned forward and stared at the Hatter. The King said, “Tell us your evidence and don’t be nervous. Or I’ll have
you executed right here”. This just made the Hatter more nervous and he just shifted from foot to foot. As Alice was
watching this trial she had gone and sat in the jury box. Then, she started to feel very strange. She was sitting next to the
mouse who said, “You shouldn’t squeeze me like that”. Alice realized that she had begun to grow big again.

Angry now the king said to the Hatter, “Hurry and give your evidence or I’ll have you executed, nervous or not!” When the
king realized that the Hatter was too nervous to speak the King finally said, “You may go” and the Hatter quickly ran toward
the door. The Queen leaned over to a guard and said, “Go and take his head off outside”. The guard looked for him but the
Hatter was gone too fast to catch him. “Call the next witness!” yelled the King.

The next witness was the cook with the pepper and the cooking pot. Alice knew who it would be before she saw the
woman because everyone started sneezing when she came in the room. The king then asked the cook, “What are tarts
made of?” The cook answered “Molasses and pepper, when I make them”. Now asking all these questions make the King
sleepy. He leaned over to the Queen. “My dear, you must question the next witness, this all makes my head ache!”. “Next
witness” he said. The White Rabbit looked through his papers and Alice thought, “Who can they call next? They haven’t
got much evidence at all so far!” So you can imagine how surprised Alice was when the White Rabbit called out the next
witnesses name in a loud voice, “Alice!”
