HOUSE ON LOAN

Katie: Hey Todd, can I ask you a favour?

Todd: Sure, any time.
Katie: Um, I really need a place to stay, and I heard that your place is on AirBNB.
Todd: It is on AirBNB. I do rent my house, but for you it's free.
Katie: OH, amazing. Can I stay there then?
Todd: You can. __How long?
Katie: Maybe a week or two weeks.
Todd: OK, when?
Katie: From next Monday.
Todd: Yeah, actually, you can do that. That works.
Katie: Excellent. Thank you so much! How about a car? Can I park my car?
Todd: Ah, that's a problem. You can`t park your car because there's no space, but there's a
cheap parking lot about maybe two blocks away.
Katie: OK.
Todd: So, it's only a _couple dollars a day.
Katie: OK, I guess I can park my car there. How about cooking there? Can I cook?
Todd: Of course, you can cook. I have a stove, a frigerator. You can bring your own food.
You can do whatever you want.
Katie: Excellent. Thank you. Can I use the Internet?
Todd: You can use the Internet. There's a password. I will write down the password before I
leave, and I will write down the password before you get there.
Katie: Excellent. Thank you so much! I was thinking about __ asking my friend if he can
stay. Can my friend stay over?
Todd: Yeah, sure, so your friend can stay. Not a problem I don't think.
Katie: He has a dog? Can he bring his dog?
Todd: Oh, that is a problem. Does the dog have a cage?
Katie: Ah, no, but we can get a cage.
Todd: I'm not sure about the dog. If the dog is in a cage, it's OK in the house but I think you
can't have the dog in the house.
Katie: OK, how about ___smoking? My friend is a very __heavy smoker. Can he smoke
outside?
Todd: Yeah, he can smoke outside, just please pick up cigarette _butts, but of course, he can't
smoke inside.
Katie: OK, he can't smoke inside.
Todd: No.
Katie: OK, how about if we want to have a party? Can we have a party?
Todd: Yeah, you can have a party. That's OK, but please be quiet. Don't be too loud. The
neighbors live very close to my house.
Katie: Alright, that sounds good. Thanks. And I have one more question. Can I use the
washing machine?
Todd: Yeah, of course. You can use anything. You use the washing machine. You can use
the Internet. You can use the TV. You can use anything you like.
Katie: Wow, excellent. That sounds great. Thank you so much.
Todd: Yeah, I will write down directions for my house, and I will send you a map, and you
can check it out and get all the information, and just I will leave the key for you with my
_neighbour.
Katie: Excellent. Thank you very much!
Todd: _Sure, no problem.

LIFE ON MARS

Sarah: We've been hearing a lot about Mars in the news.

John: Yeah, NASA keeps coming out with ____ anouncements _____ every year.

Sarah: We just found out that there's water on Mars - liquid water.

John: Yes, recently they revealed that there's evidence of _____ liquid ____ water.

Sarah: That's crazy.

John: Last year they announced that they definitely found ice - solid water - in the soil. In
the _____soil____ on Mar's surface the found frozen water. Now they found evidence of liquid
water flowing.

Sarah: Do you think people can go to Mars? Do you think we should send people to Mars?

John: I definitely think we can go there. We've already sent a number of __spacecraft to Mars,
starting with satellites many decades ago. Then there were landers, where satellites landed on the
surface and sent data back to Earth. Then we sent the __rovers. Little robot cars that drive around
on Mars, so we've already successfully sent many missions to Mars. I'm sure we can do it with
humans.

Sarah: But none of the satellites or _landers or rovers, they've never come back. Do you think we
could send people and they'd come back safely?

John: Well, that is a problem. We could _definitely send people to Mars, but bringing them back,
having the astronauts come back to Earth, would be a much more difficult problem to solve.

Sarah: So you think maybe we would send astronauts to Mars? They would never come back safely?

John: Well, if you think about the old explorers, in the olden days ... explorers used to leave their
home, and find new regions and not plan to go back. People used to take a risk, and maybe they
couldn't return, so I think there are people who are _willing to go on a one-way trip to Mars. I'm
sure there are people willing to do that, but are the rest of the people willing to send someone on
that mission? I think some people will say yes, and some people will say no. I don't know what the
percent would be, but I'm willing to allow someone to do that. If someone says I want to go to Mars.
I know it's a one-way trip, but I want to go. I think that's OK. We should let them go.

Sarah: How about you? Would you _volunteer to go?

John: Oh, no. Not me. I'm staying here on Earth.

Sarah: OK.

HIS DO-OVER

Sarah: So Adam, today we’re talking about do-overs. So what is something

that you wish you _________would have done over? For example, maybe
something in your university life?

Adam: Yeah. There are a few things. I might change my major. I studied
education, and while I enjoy what I’m doing right now, my free time I really
like watching movies about science and _________astronomy. And if I would
go back to school and start my studies over, I’d probably study something along those lines,
astronomy and ________methaphisics_ or something.

I think that those topics are really interesting and on the cutting edge of science and just fascinating
to explore.

Sarah: Interesting. Anything else you wish you would have done?

Adam: I _____might____ have been more involved in the sports clubs at my school. For example,
the American football team. I played in high school but in college, I wanted to play but I didn’t have
the motivation to _____push____ me over the edge to actually go out and really put my heart
__into_______ it.

I went to one training day and kind of tried out, but I didn’t really pursue it as much as I would have
liked. I think it would have been fun to be a part of that culture and that environment.

Sarah: How about something that you did do that maybe now you wish you hadn’t?

Adam: I pierced my ears in high school because that was the cool thing to do. But now I don’t wear
___earrings______. And yeah, looking back on it, kind of just a silly thing to do that I’m trying to
follow the trends, that, you know, trends usually pass.

So yeah, that would be something that I wouldn’t do again.

Sarah: Nice. Anything else you would have changed?

Adam: I might have made different ___decisions______ about my girlfriends at the time. I had a
really good girlfriend in the beginning of college, and things didn’t work out because of a variety of
reasons. But I think if we would have worked on it, we could have. We could have made it, made it
happen. So yeah, that’s something I think about sometimes about life in ____college_____.

It’s always, you know, college love is kind of a crazy thing. So yeah, we’re too much like kids, I
____guess_____, I think at that age.

Sarah: Okay. Thanks, Adam.

“Home security”

Hi. I’m Bob, and welcome to the show, My Home Your Home.

Imagine that it’s Monday afternoon, and you decide to step out and
buy a few things for dinner before the kids get home from school. You
look at your watch. It’s 1:30 PM, and you need to be back in 20
minutes. When you get back, you notice nothing out of the
___ordinary______, and everything is just as you left it. Then, as you
are looking through your dresser drawer, you notice that the contents
are in ______disarray. You realize money you had hidden carefully at
the bottom is gone. Nothing else in the house has been taken. And the only evidence of entry is a
dirty footprint through an unlocked window.

Sound untrue? Not to our family because it happened to us.

There are several basic steps you can take to avoid being victimized in your own home. First of all,
make sure that all of your _____exterior____ doors and windows have _____secure locks. If you’ve
recently moved into a new home, you would be ____ways_____ to rekey all of the doors because
you never know who might be walking around with a copy of one. Never leave a copy of the key
outside under a ____doormat_____, on a window sill, above a door, or in the mailbox. Burglars are
very aware of your temptation to do so, and they will find an easy way in through your carelessness.

Second, discourage burglars from even considering your home by keeping your yard
well __groomed_______. Trim back ___shrubbery______ and trees around entryways and windows
where burglars can ____conceal themselves. Install bright porch lights both in front and in back of
your house and consider investing in a motion detector as well. Also, use a light timer to
automatically turn on your __interior_______ or exterior lights at times when you are away. Next,
set up a neighborhood watch group to ___patrol______the area. Keep neighbors informed when
you might be away, and have them collect your mail and newspapers if needed.

Finally, prepare your family in the event someone breaks into your house in order to avoid
serious __confrontations_______. If you hear strange sounds in the house, call the police rather
than seeking out the intruder. Having a gun to protect you at home is often not the
best ___deterrent because it can be used against you.

Think smart and prepare. Doing these basics will go a long way to securing your home, property, and
peace of mind.

THE IDEAL WOMAN

Ed: Oh come on man! What kind of woman do you like?

Rocky: I want a woman who’s affectionate and __fulfils_______ my every need, and that woman
over there is just not the right type.

Ed: Hey. Where have you been? Times are changing, and you’re never going to find a woman who
will _______shine__ your shoes and pick up after you all the time. Wake up.

Rocky: Oh really? I meet a lot of women like that, but not at this party. [Oh.] I also prefer a woman
who’ll stay home, cook, clean, and watch the kids.

Ed: Okay, but what are your ____household_____ responsibilities once you get home from work?

Rocky: Hmm. Eat, watch TV, and _throw out________the garbage.

Ed: Wait, wait, wait. I can’t believe I’m hearing this. In fact, you’re never going to get married. I
recently read a news report that said 40 percent of women don’t think their husbands do their
___share______ around the house, and you seem to be that type.

Rocky: Well, that’s the way I am, but what’s YOUR idea of the perfect woman?

Ed: Well, I like a woman who’s outgoing, caring, and ____non-judgmental about people’s
differences, and it _____bothers____ me when people think they’re the center of the universe . . .
like someone I know.

Rocky: Well, that’s nice for you, but that doesn’t change my point of view. I guess I’ll have to go
home to a TV dinner and my dog, Rusty.

Ed: Hey, and if I ___stick______ with you, this is going to be a long, lonely night. Say hello to Rusty
for me.

uh.

medicines that not only ____retard____ hair loss, but help ___regenerate______ new growth.

Ron: Ah, I still don’t give much credibility to medical treatment to prevent permanent hair loss.

Heather: Well, what about accepting the fact that you’re just losing your hair?

Ron: I just can’t give up hope. I know ___appearances____ shouldn’t matter, but I don’t know. I just
feel that women just avoid me.

Heather: Come on. You can’t be ____serious_____.

Ron: No really. I’ve seen it many times. It just, I don’t know . . .
