EXS 111: Computer Applications

[November 21, 2022]

Abstract

In this project, we have experienced several games that impact our daily health that are created to
make exercise enjoyable. The games that were examined are: Pokemon Go, Walkr, … We
collected Data which included biometric values such as resting and active heart rate, distance
recorded, and evaluations of enjoyment. After recording our experiences, we came up with our
own game idea , Exercise Clash. The app’s goal to have full body workouts in for the day rather
than the apps that false advertise by telling you workouts through spot training.
Introduction

Exercising is not always fun for some people and when they want to input fitness into their lives
it can be hard; especially not knowing when to start. It can be challenging to try to fit in healthy
activities when time is limited, especially when the objective is to exercise every day to form
good habits. As technology is now advanced , exercising can now be achieved through our
fingertips with cell phones. Using cellphones, we are able to collect data that can help you
achieve fitness goals efficiently.

The Games

5 distinct games were played over the course of 5 days.

Pokemon Go

Brianna Garcia

I have never been interested in playing Pokemon Go so this will be my first time ever playing the
game and I’d say it isn’t a bad game. I can see how some people can be addicted towards it.

History of Pokemon Go

Pokemon Go was created by Niantic and the Pokemon company. John Hanke has developed the
first pokemon and the Niantic version which is now called Pokemon Go. Hanke collaborated
with niantic in 2001. In 2010, they started on a project to use technology and geo-location.
Which was later applied on Pokemon Go. In 2014, Pokemon Go started to take shape when
google maps set up the pokemon challenge.

Game Mechanics

In the game, players can identify landmarks on the map which are usually surrounded by
pokemons. Then, the player is allowed to click on the pokemon closest to them and be able to
throw the pokeball towards the aimed target to be able to catch the pokemon. There are different
layers of currency built into the game that progress along different time curves, giving each layer
of progression its own speed and flavor. Each capture session is unique — the angle of the
Pokéball is different, the placement of the Pokémon is different and there’s also an opportunity
to have a unique experience tied with the real world. The environment in the game is also
different, with Gyms constantly in flux and new Pokémon appearing at different intervals and in
different places. Each walk also actively engages the player physically — and exercise naturally
triggers a positive feel for your body, adding an additional layer of delight to the gameplay
experience.

My Review

It is very easy to play and understand the objective of the game. This game has made it enjoyable
to walk in the cold. As the weather changes, the weather usually causes me to forget about
exercise and stay in bed. This game has made me realize that exercising can be something simple
like walking while collecting pokemon which made it enjoyable.

Walkr

Sebastian Alvarez

I honestly never knew this game existed until the day in class where we had to choose a game to
use for this data collection point. I honestly didn’t really like the game that much, I felt like the
game was trying to do a little too much.

History of Walkr

Walkr was created back in 2014 by a company named Fourdesire. Walkr is the second offering

in a series of health-conscious games from Fourdesire, creators of the Plant Nanny app with

more than 10 million players! Hop on the Walkr spaceship and begin your adventure across the

boundless cosmos.

Game Mechanics
My Review

Other than Walkr trying to do too much it wasn’t that bad of a game, it was simple to get the
hang of. The game was a very unique way of getting people to go out. Honestly the format of the
game looks as if its intended audience was younger children, the whole family-friendly looking
animation gives me a sense of childhood therefore giving me a sense of it being a game intended
for the younger generation.

Jurassic World Alive

Matthew Bilichuk

I had heard of this game before, however, I was never interested enough to download and put
any time into it. The game was actually really cool because of the many different dinosaurs that
were available to obtain. I didn’t like how the game included different modes within the game
such as the area battles against AI and other players. I felt that this made the game too
complicated and found myself ignoring the AI battles and just hunting down animals.

History of Jurassic World Alive

The app was developed by Ludia back in 2018 and was based on the renowned movie franchise
“Jurassic World”. The game was also designed similarly to the hit game “Pokemon Go” that
paved the way for games of its kind. However, the game is designed to be a more mature-type of
game that features violence, blood, and online-chats that may be sensitive to children. Ludia had
originally partnered with Universal Studios, but made the switch to Unity halfway through game
development.

Game Mechanics

In the game players can identify landmarks that are surrounded by different kinds of dinosaurs.
Using darts that are obtained from the landmarks, achievement rewards, or battle rewards players
can interact with dinosaurs in range and by shooting the dinosaur with the dart the player gets
DNA of that animal. Players will be forced to get up and move to get into range of certain
dinosaurs or landmarks. Once the necessary amount of DNA is obtained, players can develop the
dinosaur into their collection. Dinosaurs in the collection can be upgraded with tokens rewarded
through landmarks, achievement rewards, or battle rewards. They can then be used in battle
arenas where you put your dinosaurs against others in a fight with advantages and disadvantages
based on the type of animal you want to fight.

My Review

I found the game to be very interesting and fun to play if you’re into dinosaurs and location
based games. The objective wasn’t clear though and I found most of my time was spent trying to
get every dinosaur instead of battling with others. The exercise portion of the app was also weak
as the dinosaurs would spawn on the map close to you periodically, reducing the distance I
needed to get up and walk to another destination. I understand what the game was aiming for,
especially after the release of the “Jurassic World” franchise and how it may target certain age
groups. It is a fun game though and I would recommend it to those that find its subject
fascinating and would like to get up and jump into the fun.

Orna: The GPS RPG

Conner Gallagher

Previous to this assignment I have never really used Exergaming apps in my everyday life or
really have ever been exposed to what type of games there are available. I had never heard of this
game or ever thought I would play it. However after playing this app was pretty cool and allowed
you to customize your own character and build your own town in a game on a map of what your
actual town looks like. This game allowed me to get out of the house and explore the town I go
to school in. It also helped me stay active on days when I would normally stay inside.

History of Orna
Orna: The GPS RPG was launched in the summer of 2018 and was created by Norther Forge
Studies. The goal of Orna was to challenge what is meant to be a location-enabled game by
blending similar combat from other favorite classic role-playing games while also including real
world features. The best feature included, they said, was the multiplayer feature that allowed for
a large growth player community.

Game Mechanics

The game used a unique GPS powered multiplayer role-playing game where you can create your
origin town, participate in combat, collect and upgrade your weapons and armor, and also
participate in an open-world online multiplayer game where you can claim real world landmarks
as your own. The mechanics of this game force players to get up and out of their house to and
travel to different landmarks within the city around them and even participate in face-to-face
interactions with other people in online combat. The multiplayer features in this game also allow
you to team up with other friends and build your own kingdom. To upgrade your weapons and
armor and create a higher status within the game, you have to win in combat and take down other
kingdoms and earn money to complete your upgrades.

My Review

I found this to be a very interesting game but overall would not recommend it for the purposes of
implementing exercise into someone's everyday life. I felt like this app was more for the uses of
enjoyment along with the benefits of implementing exercise. What made it most difficult to
gather data for the game was the fact that it is not so popular. I did not find any friends that I
could challenge in combat or team up with to develop a kingdom. This made it very difficult to
progress in the game. I do however like the idea of the game as it is very similar to Pokemon Go,
however if they did this idea again and used a more popular franchise to base characters off of, it
would have more success.

Our Game Proposal: Exercise Clash

An application that allows you to compete with your friends and/or online friends that are
active on the app the same time you are . The competition is the unlimited levels that the
app will have. Each level gets difficult as you go up ( different resting rates in each level)
and consist of High intensity- interval workouts. ( running, body-weight exercises)
The objective is to have full body workouts in for the day rather than the apps that false
advertise by telling you workouts through spot training.

Game Mechanics

The Exercise Clash application will be free and it can be downloaded on Ios and android
through the app store and google play. It would use the health app to track down your
distance through steps, active energy, resting energy, and body details such as lean body
mass, body mass index, and body percentage. The game uses goal setting tools and new
content daily as it includes content on the side giving you the option to play solo. It will
display new workouts everyday. The look of the game will resemble a powerful
statement with dark tones and the levels will be placed as seen on candy crush through a
map. Players will also have the option to compete with friends on how many levels they
can complete during the week.
