Culturally Sustaining

Pedagogy
CSP
CSP or Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy allows
for students to maintain their own cultures and
learn in a safe space. These practices embrace
diversity and explore the cultures found within
the community to make connections between a
student's home life and school.

Being Culturally Responsive

When we say that someone is being culturally responsive
we are also saying that they are culturally competent.
Someone who is culturally responsive recognizes potential

biases and is aware of the cultural difference among their

students. A person who is culturally competent values
diversity, and creates work in the classroom that includes
more diversified materials in order to connect with every
student.

CSP & My Future Classroom

In my future classroom...
1.) I will take the time to learn about my students and their cultural backgrounds.
2.) I will represent a multitude of cultures using pictures, books, and different
forms of media.
3.) I will involve the students families by sending out newsletters and inviting
them to classroom events.
4.) I will implement inquiry based learning, where the students will have to come
up with questions of their own, and use the information they find to solve
problems on their own.
5.) I will push for student led activities, and group exercises where students work
together.

School Culture
CSP should be included in K-12 culture because it
will help students from any background feel
comfortable and accepted in their learning
environment. CSP creates amore diversified social
groups and pushes for better connections among
the student body.
