LIFE ON MARS?

In the UK people celebrate the first day of April by playing jokes on each other and
sometimes TV programmes and newspapers join in the fun! There have been some
very clever jokes over the years, which people believe because they are in the paper
or on TV.

One that I remember vividly from when I was young was on a programme called
Tomorrow’s World. This programme looked at unusual scientific inventions and
stories. It was on every week, and was very popular. Well, this particular 1 April the
programme started off looking at the number of ‘missing people’ in Britain over the
last year. They then went on to ‘prove’ that the USA and Russia were starting a
colony on the planet Mars and this was where all these people had gone! They
showed photographs of the planet with heat rising from the ground. Apparently the
people were living under the ground in specially designed homes.

I believed this story completely! It seemed so real and so possible. That was until I
got to school the next day and realised that the whole thing was a joke! But it was a
very clever joke and one that I have always remembered.

Hi Trang,
Do you remember when we used to talk about that perfect place where one should
spend some days for a holiday? Well, I have decided to go on a trip to this wonderful
resort, not very far from home, before I go back to work.
Unfortunately, as I am writing you this letter, I am not quite having the time of my life.
I had only bad luck in this trip. First of all I spent 3 hours more on the road, because
the bus got some problems with the engine, if you can imagine, and we had to find a
service that could fix it. After that,when we finally got to the destination, we found out
that we were to late for dinner and we will get no food until the next morning. This
wouldn't have been so hard to handle, if it weren't for the lack of warm water in the
bathroom. Imagine I had to take a shower with cold water!
And as if this weren't enough, the mini-trips that were included in the price were
cancelled because of the weather. It has been raining all day and i have heard
tomorrow will be the same. So I have to spend all my time to the hotel, maybe
playing some pool or swimming. Luckily we have these choices.
But, sincerely, I am eager to go home, because this is not what I had expected from
this journey.
I hope next time I will make a better choice, but until then I wish you all the best and
enjoy your time back home!
