Fractions

This pack is designed to help students who are finding their current module (on
Fractions) too difficult.

The pack brings together sheets from several Cuemath modules that teach
fractions. These sheets are marked by year and have been carefully chosen to give
the student a chance to experience fractions the Cuemath way and prepare them
to tackle their current module.

Here’s how we suggest you use this pack.

Refer to the table at the back.

• C
hoose the set of worksheets that teaches the ideas of the previous year. (e.g. if
your student is in Year 6, ask them to solve the set marked Year 5.)

• If
the student is able to solve these sheets comfortably, ask them to return to
the module they were working on.

• If
the student finds the set too difficult, ask them to move to the set marked
one year lower. (In this case, A3–A4, S5–S13, marked Year 4.)

There are notes on some sheets within this pack. We encourage you to refer to
them.
Year 3 A1–A2, S1–S3

By the end of this activity, you will be able to

• understand mixed and improper fractions,
• form mixed and improper fractions, and
• understand the relationship between mixed and improper fractions.

To find out the fraction that a whole and a fraction together represent, let us look at the steps
below.

Step 1: Assume that the biggest rod (brown rod here) is equivalent to one and place it vertically.

Step 2: Now to find out the fraction that the smaller rod (red rod here) represents, take out a few of
them from the bag.

Step 3: Place the red rods vertically one below the other, adjacent to the brown rod. Continue
placing the rods till you make the two lengths equal.
(a) How many red rods did you use?

(b) Each red rod represents of the brown rod. (Fill in the blank)

Step 4: Now place one brown and one red rod adjacent to each other. These rods together represent
1 1
1 . This fraction has a whole number 1 and a proper fraction . Such fractions are called
4 4
mixed fractions.
1
(a) In 1 , 1 is the number and is a proper fraction.
4

Step 5: Now replace the brown rod with equivalent number of red rods.

(a) How many red rods are there in total?

© Cue Learn Pvt. Ltd. 23

5
Step 6: Now, these red rods together represent , since we have 5 red rods in total and each red
4
1
rod is of the whole. (Note that one whole is the brown rod.)
4
These fractions represent a quantity more than a whole. In such fractions, the numerator is always
bigger than the denominator. Such fractions are called improper fractions. Observe that a mixed
fraction and an improper fraction are different representations of the same quantities.

Note: The first row of the table below is filled out for you. Perform the activity for the other
fractions and fill in the blanks. Also, not every fraction rod chosen for rod 2 can be represented as a
fraction of rod 1. Try more than once and find the appropriate equivalent fractions. Take the help of
your teacher if you are unable to perform the activity after several attempts.

2 1
Step 3: To add the numbers, place all the rods that make up 1 and 2 together.
4 4

(a) Number of dark blue rods = Number of white rods =

If there are enough white rods, replace them with an equivalent number of dark blue rods.

1 2
(b) So, 2 +1 = .

Let’s find the difference of 3 and 1 .  We’ll assume the light green rod is a whole (one).
3 3
Step 1: Take out some white and light green rods.

(a) How many white rods placed together equal the length of one light green rod?

(b) So, the white rod represents the fraction  .

1 2
Step 2: Represent 3 and 1 using fraction rods.
3 3

(a) 3 : Number of light green rods = Number of white rods =
3
2
(b) 1 : Number of light green rods = Number of white rods =

Step 3: From 3 , take away the white and light green rods that make up 1 .
3 3
1
If there aren’t enough white rods in 3 ,  replace a light green rod with an equivalent number
3
of white rods.

(a) Number of light green rods left = Number of white rods left =

1 2
(b) So, 3 1 .
