WORKABILITY TEST (SLUMP TEST)

❖ CLO1 : Perform practical activities using appropriate tools

and techniques for concrete works with safety
awareness. (P3 , PLO5)
❖ CLO3 : Participate actively in a teamwork during practical
activities. (A3 , PLO9)

OBJECTIVE
To determine the workability or consistency of concrete mix of given
proportion by slump

THEORY
✓ Properties of concrete are governed not only by the properties
of its ingredients (cement, water, sand and coarse aggregate) but
also to a great extent, by the relative proportions of these
ingredients

✓ The proportions must be so selected as to produce a concrete

mixture of desired workability, strength, durability and economy

SCOPE OF WORK
✓ The strength of concrete of a given mix proportions is
very seriously affected by the degree of its compaction

✓ The ease with which concrete mixes can be compacted as

completely as possible while using the lowest possible
water / cement ratio

PROCEDURES

i.Select mix ratio for conrete grade.

ii. Water Cement Ration (W/C)

W/C = ( Mass of Cement)/(Mass of Water) 1 Litre = 1Kg
Mass of cement = 2 Kg
Mass of water = 1.5 Kg

W/C =(Mass of Cement)/(Mass of Water)

W/C = (2 Kg)/(1.5 Kg)
W/C = 1.33 Kg

1. Place the cone on a smooth, flat and clean surface. Make sure the apparatus
and associated equipment are clean before test and free from hardened concrete
and superfluous water.

2. The internal surface of the cone is to be thoroughly cleaned and applied with a
light coat of oil then the cone is placed on the smooth, horizontal, rigid and non-
absorbent surface.
3. Provide material for the concrete mix according to ratio weight as prescribed.

4. Stand or foot pieces throughout the test procedure to hold the cone firmly in
place. Fill cone full approximately in 1/3 in height of the cone. Tamp each layer 25
times using tamping rod.

5. Fill cone 2/3 full by volume. Rod this layer 25 times, but not through the first
layer. Distribute rodding evenly over the entire cross section of the layer.

6. Fill cone to overflowing. Rod this layer 25 times also but not through the
second layer. Distribute rodding evenly over the entire cross section of this layer.

7. Remove the excess concrete from the top of the cone by using tamping rod or
trowel. Clean over flow from base of the cone also.

8. Immediately lift cone vertically with slow motion. Don’t tilt the cone during this
process. Perform in 5-10 seconds with no lateral or torsional motion.

9. Flip the cone, place the tamping rod horizontally and measure the slump
distance.

Table 3 : Slump classes

TYPES OF SLUMP
✓ Zero Slump – Just a littie bit drops of concrete mix
✓ True Slump – The concrete simply subsides , keeping more of less to shape.
✓ Shear Slump – The top portion of the concrete shears off and slips
sideways.
✓ Collapse Slump – The concrete collapses completely.

CONCLUSION
Slump result was 205 mm which mean the type of slump collapse.
This happened because there a lot of water content in the concrete
and look wetly during the test. Water content in the concrete, mean
higher the workability but lower the strength.

DISCUSSION

Answer the questions.

Good slump for concrete is suitable for

concrete of medium to high workability
What is the ideal slump? Why? have slump value 25 mm to 125 mm, as the
value of slump increases, the wetter the
concrete mix, slump value 100 mm (4inch)
is good for pumping and normal weight
concrete

Determine difficulties during the testing being carried out.

i. It is not exact measurement because slump bears no unique relation to

workability
ii. For a specimen, more than one shape can be resulted confusing the correct
result
iii. It is not suitable for concrete formed of aggregate higher than 40 mm
iv. It is unreliable for lean mixes

WHAT IS SIGNIFICANCE OF SLUMP TEST.

The slump test is suitable for slumps of medium to low workability, slump in
the range of 5 – 260 mm, the test fails to determine the difference in workability
in stiff mixes which have zero slump, or for wet mixes that give a collapse
slump. It is limited to concrete formed of aggregates of less than 38 mm (1.5
inch.
