Do Textbooks help Chinese Students in Easytalk develop English Fluency?

English fluency is main goal of speaking classes like Easytalk. Being fluent pertains
to the ability to utilize the English language without hesitation or stumble. It is often
described as “automaticity,” or the ability to use a language without thinking about it. Fluency
is often viewed as the ability to construct a sentence with ease.

Chinese students often set themselves the goal of becoming fluent in the language
for various reasons. It could be to succeed at work, school, and in life in general. Being
proficient in English language unlocks opportunities towards work-life balance careers, study
abroad and travel. Learning the English language is extremely important. It saves one from
embarrassment and fraud.

However, Chinese students have limited exposure of the English language in

schools. Their curriculum focuses mainly on reading and writing and give little to none
importance on speaking and listening (Tang, C. 2018). In addition, tests such as CELT have
an important part in curriculum. Thus, most teachers stress that their teaching usually
centers around tests because students are required to pass these tests. And thus, giving
more emphasis on learning textbooks rather than the application of the language

Textbooks play a vital role in language classrooms in all types of educational

institutions all over the world. They provide the basis for the content of the lessons, the
balance of skills taught and the kinds of language practice the students take part in.
Choosing an appropriate book should be taken consideration. Textbooks play a very crucial
role in the realm of language teaching and learning and are considered the next important
factor (element) in the second/foreign language classroom after the teacher (Garinger,
2001).

This study aims to identify the role of textbook in language learning and would it be
enough to achieve fluency of the target language. The survey is conducted to Chinese
students studying in Easytalk.

The survey shows that majority of the students interviews recognized the importance
of textbook in language learning. However, they also pointed out that studying textbooks is
not enough to achieve language fluency. Input learning should be accompanied with an
output learning.
