CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM
INTRODUCTION

Reading is one of four skills in English language among writing, speaking and listening. It is not
denied that all of English language skills can influence someone capability in English Language.
Reading on text or book in English language form, is so hard for the students in Indonesia.
Many of them distracted with its pronunciation. Pronunciation is probably the most neglected
aspect of English language teaching (Haycraft, 1978:55). In this paper, the writer concerns with
reading and pronunciation. Pronunciation is very Influent on reading quality. Reading is the
ability to draw meaning from the printed page and Interpret this information r (L. Stoller, 2002).
Besides, pronunciation refers to the Ability to use the correct stress, rhythm, and intonation of a
spoken English. A word can be spoken in different ways by various individual groups,
depending many factors, such as ; the area in which they grow up, the area in which they now
live, their ethnic group, their social class, Or their education.
One of the learning aspects that is significant to learn for increase communication
skills is pronunciation. Clear pronunciation gives speakers the power to be confident when
expressing and indicating themselves in communicating with others. (Zaigham 2011) There will
be some learners who may want to approach a native like pronunciation as they to deal on
equal terms with native speakers. (Huang 2010) one of the difficulties in learning pronunciation
is when learners pronounce English words. As a result making errors in pronouncing English as
foreign language is considered as a common and natural phenomenon in the early stage of
foreign language learning process.(Goodwin 2001).
The researchers chose this title to test the pronunciation skills of Grade-11 student in
reading pronunciation in English at Central Mangilala National High School.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEMS


Generally, this study aims to assessment the reading pronunciations of Grade 11 ICT students
of Central Mangilala National High School.
Specifically, the researcher aim to answer the following problems
1) Adapt an Assessment tool for reading pronunciation.
2) Assess the quality of the adapted assessment tool in terms of content.
3) Administer the assessment of reading pronunciation on Grade 11 ICT students.

SCOPE OF THE STUDY


This study is of learners when reading . This study is about the assessment of the
pronunciation skills on English reading of the students at Central Mangilala National High
School (CMNHS) , fifty six(56) students of Grade-11 ICT students of Central Mangilala
National High School (CMNHS) will participate as the respondents of research.
This study focuses on current Grade 11 ICT students of Central Mangilala National High
School at the present school year 2022-2023.

SIGNIFICANT OF THE STUDY


The study is significant of it’s contribution in assessment of reading pronunciation.
Central Mangilala National High School – They can help the administrator to develop and
improve the reading skills of students and to provide program or improve existing program.
Teachers – This study will benefit the teacher to create new strategies in teaching especially
in the field of English.
Parents -This study will provide additional information to the parents about their child/
children’s standing in terms of reading pronunciation in English as a benefit for
improvement.
Researchers -The result of the study may eventually benefit the researchers to evaluate.
The reading pronunciation of the students, it may encourage and enable them to make
greater progress.
