(©) Define a cofactor of a square matrix. (d) Define an adjoint of a square matrix (e) Define an eigenvector of a square matrix (£) Explain the significance of an eigenvalue with regard to a system of linear equations (g) Define a diagonal matrix, upper and lower triagular matrices. Define a symmetric matrix. Define a skew-symmetric matrix. Define a orthogonal vectors. Define a orthogonal matrix. (1) Define a hermitian matrix. (m) Define a unitary matrix. Question 2 Define the following terms: +44+24+243] (a) @ span. (b) a basis (c) a dimension. (a) a rank (e) nullity Section B In this section answer any three questions only. Question 1 Let A be a 3-by-3 matrix. Then answer the following, (9 +942) {a) Prove that |A| = ays +--+ aa;sy is the expansion of det(A) along the ith column. (b) Prove that for each i # &, ay Ay ++ + aaiAse (c) Prove that [Al — |A'| = 0. Question 2 Consider the following narration. B+7+34+443] Derieck inherited W825, 000 and invested part of it in a money market account, part in municipal bonds, and part in a mutual fund. After one year, he received a total of IVS1, 620 in simple interest from the three investments. The money market paid 6% annually, the bonds paid 7% annually, and the mutually fund paid 8% annually. There was N'$6,000 more invested in the bonds than the mutual funds. (a) Extract the system of linear equations from the narration (b) Determine the eigenvalues of the system of linear equations, (c) Determine the corresponding eigenvectors of the system of linear equations. (A) Determine the the inverse of the matrix containing the corresponding eigenvectors of the system of linear equations. (e) Show whether the the system of linear equations is diagonalizable oz not. Question 3 Let a matrix A be a 2-by-2 matrix. Then answer the following: (+34+34+643] (a) Prove that A(adjoint(A)) = (adjoint(A))A (b) Show that A(adjoint(A)) = det(A) ln, where I denotes a 2-by-2 identity matrix, (A) Derive that A! = hyadjoint(A) (e) Prove that a square matrix with distinet eigenvalues is diagonalizable. (f) Prove that if a matrix is a Hermitian matrix, then eigenvectors corresponding to distinct eigenvalues are orthogonal. Question 4 Answer the following questions [6+8+6] (a) Proof that for any non-zero vectors a, b, a+b = |allb|cos(0), where 0 is an angel betwet and b.
