Question 1.

Find the rank and nullity of the following matrices.

 
1 −1 3
a) A =  5 −4 −4 .
 

7 −6 2
 
1 4 5 2
b) B =  2 1 3 0 .
 

−1 3 2 2

Question 2.

In each case below, find the largest possible value for the rank of A and the smallest possible value for
the nullity of A?

a) A is a 4 × 4 matrix.

b) A is a 3 × 5 matrix.

c) A is a 5 × 3 matrix.

Question 3.

Suppose that A is a 3 × 3 matrix whose null space is a line through the origin in R3 . Can the row or
column space of A also be a line through the origin? Explain.

Question 4.
 
1 2 −1
 1 9 −1 
For A =  , find a basis for the row space of A:
 
 −3 8 3 
−2 3 2

a) consisting of vectors that are not row vectors of A.

b) consisting of vectors that are row vectors of A.
