Question 1.
Explain why the following are not bases for the indicated vector spaces.
a) {(1, 2), (0, 3), (2, 7)} for R2 .

b) {(−1, 3, 2), (6, 1, 1)} for R3 .

c) {1 + x + x2 , x − 1} for P2 .

Question 2.
Which of the following sets are bases for R3 ?
a) {(3, −1, 4), (2, 5, 6), (1, 4, 8)}

b) {(1, 6, 4), (2, 4, −1), (−1, 2, 5)}

Question 3.
Find a basis for, and the dimension of, the solution space of the system:

x1 − 4x2 + 3x3 − x4 = 0
2x1 − 8x2 + 6x3 − 2x4 = 0.

Question 4.
Find a basis for, and the dimension of, the subspace of R3 given by the plane with equation x − y = 0.

Question 5.
Find a basis for, and the dimension of, the following vector spaces:
a) All 3 × 3 matrices.

b) All 3 × 3 diagonal matrices.

Question 6.

a) Let B be a basis for a vector space V . Prove that if S is a linearly independent subset of V which
contains B, then S = B

b) Prove that if {v1 , v2 } is a basis for a vector space V , then so is {u1 , u2 }, where u1 = v1 + v2 and
u2 = v1 − v2 .
