MATH1050 ASSIGNMENT 1

Complete the following problems, showing full working. Submit your solutions into the as-
signment submission box on level three of the Priestley (Mathematics) Building (67). You must
include the cover sheet which will be emailed to you. Late assignments will be accepted only
with a medical certicate or evidence of other exceptional circumstances. See Section 6 of the
course prole for more details. Each of the four assignments will contribute 3% towards your
nal grade. Although you are encouraged to discuss the assignment questions with your peers,
your written assignment must be your own work. Solutions to the assignment will be available
approximately one to two weeks after the due date. Please scan your assignments for your records
prior to submission via the electronic assignment submission system. Due date: Monday,
12/03/2018, 5 pm. This assignment will be marked out of 24. There are six questions. Each

question carries 4 marks.

Covering Chapters 1, 2 and some of 3 of the workbook:

(1) Solve the following review problems, explaining your reasoning:
(a) Find the set of all x ∈ R such that ∣2x − 1∣ = 3x and x ∈ N = {1, 2, 3, . . . }.
(b) Consider the following sum,
S = (5 − 22 ) + (5 − 42 ) + (5 − 62 ) + ⋅ ⋅ ⋅ + (5 − 122 ) .
Write the sum S in summation notation using the symbol ∑, and
compute the value of S ∈ R.
(c) Simplify the surd
√ √
6 − 12
y= √ √ ,
6+ 3

representing y in the form a + b 2, where a, b ∈ R.
(d) Simplify sin(π − x).
(e) Using an appropriate trigonometric rule, determine in radians, the
interior angles of the triangle with sides of length 3, 4, and 8 metres.
(2) Simplify the following trigonometric expressions:
(a) 6 − 4 cos(2x).
(b) (1 − cos2 (x)) (1 + tan2 (x)).
(c) cos21(θ) − 1.
(d) 1+sin(θ)
cos(θ)
+ 1+sin(θ)
cos(θ)
.
(3) Solve the following equations for x:
(a) 22x + 8 = 6 × 2x .

(b) 1000x = 81.

(c) log5 (3x − 2) = 2.
(d) log3 (2x − 4) − log3 (x − 1) = log3 (x − 2).
(4) Let
1 −3 6
u=( ), v=( ), w=( ).

(a) Compute the vector x = 2u + v, sketch the four vectors u, 2u, v, and
2u + v in the same plane, and then calculate the norm of x.
(b) Find all of the unit vectors that are perpendicular and parallel to the
vector w.
(5) Consider the vector v = (3, 4, 5). Extending the notion of direction to
vectors in 3D, nd the direction angles θ, measured anti-clockwise from
the positive x-axis, and φ, measured anti-clockwise from the positive y -
axis, and the magnitude of v. Hints: Think geometrically, sketch, and
calculate
√ algebraically. The magnitude of a 3D vector x = (a, b, c) is ∥x∥ =
a + b + c2 .

(6) A box of mass 4 kg rests on an inclined plane at 30○ to the horizontal, in

equilibrium due to friction. Determine the magnitude of the three forces:
friction F, the normal reaction force N, and the force v due to gravity.
Letting µ ∈ (0, 1) be the coecient of friction of the surface of the inclined
plane, given by ∥F∥ = µ∥N∥, calculate µ. If a 6 kg box were placed on the
same incline instead, determine the rate at which the box would accelerate
down the incline, giving the result as a vector.
