MATH1050 ASSIGNMENT 3

Complete the following problems, showing full working. Submit your solutions into the as-
signment submission box on level three of the Priestley (Mathematics) Building (67). You must
include the cover sheet which will be emailed to you. Late assignments will be accepted only
with a medical certicate or evidence of other exceptional circumstances. See Section 6 of the
course prole for more details. Each of the four assignments will contribute 3% towards your
nal grade. Although you are encouraged to discuss the assignment questions with your peers,
your written assignment must be your own work. Solutions to the assignment will be available
approximately one to two weeks after the due date. Please scan your assignments for your records
prior to submission via the electronic assignment submission system. Each question is worth 3
marks. The assignment will be marked out of 24. Due date: Monday, 30/04/2018, 5 pm.

(1) Let f (x) = x10 − 3x5 + 2. Find all α ∈ C satisfying f (α) = 0 and use
your results to express f (x) as a product of linear factors (factorize f (x)
completely). Hint: Let z = x5 and consider the roots of g(z) = f (x). Write
the roots of g(z) in exponential (or polar) form.
(2) Consider the function f given by
1
f ∶ R Ð→ R, f (x) = √ .

(a) Determine the domain D and range R of the function f .
(b) Show that f is not one to one on D.
(c) Let S ⊆ D be a subset of the domain of f such that for all x ∈ S , x ≤ 0
and the function

f` ∶ S Ð→ R, f`(x) = √

is one to one. Find such a set S .

(d) For the set S given in Part (c), nd f`−1 (x).
(e) Determine the domain of f`−1 (x) found in Part (d).
(f) Determine the range of f`−1 (x) found in Part (d).
(3) Calculate cos21( 7π ) without a calculator.

(4) A parallelogram has sides of equal length but the distance between two
opposite vertices 1.5 times that of the length of a given side. Use the Sine
rule to calculate the interior angle of the parallelogram.
(5) Compute the complex number cos ( π4 + π4 i) without a calculator or com-
puter. Hint: Consider expressions for e±θi .
