MATH1050 ASSIGNMENT 4

Complete the following problems, showing full working. Submit your solutions into the as-
signment submission box on level three of the Priestley (Mathematics) Building (67). You must
include the cover sheet which will be emailed to you. Late assignments will be accepted only
with a medical certicate or evidence of other exceptional circumstances. See Section 6 of the
course prole for more details. Each of the four assignments will contribute 3% towards your

your written assignment must be your own work. Solutions to the assignment will be available
approximately one to two weeks after the due date. Please scan your assignments for your records
prior to submission via the electronic assignment submission system. Due date: Monday,
21/05/2018, 5 pm. This assignment will be marked out of 24. Each question carries

4 marks.

(1) Calculate the denite integral ∫0a x a2 − x2 dx, where a is some xed posi-
tive real number.
(2) Consider the series ∑nj=1 j 3 . Find a polynomial formula f (n) = ∑nj=1 j 3 for
this series and then prove that it holds for all n ∈ Z(>0) using mathematical
induction.
(3) Find the point on the parabola y 2 = 2x + 3 that is closest to the point
(−4, 7).
(4) Calculate the sum of the rst 1300 positive whole numbers n that are of
the form n = 14m + 3, where m is a non-negative integer.
(5) Calculate ∑∞ j=1 5 .
−j

(6) Let f (n) = ∫1 x , and let g(n) = ∑nj=1 1j . Show that for all n ∈ Z(>0) ,
n dx

g(n) > f (n). Now consider lim f (n). Use this to evaluate ∑∞ j=1 j .
